What you should keep in mind when buying second readers like this is that they are made up of fairly easy words. So the movie that they are taken from is a simplified portion of it only. These words are appropriate for kindergarten or first grade kids depending on where they are in the learning to read process. If you want readers that more closely follow the actual movie, 3rd readers with more complicated words and a longer story will be a better fit. These books are perfect to get reluctant readers, they help by using something kids already love. This is not really the type of book you'd sit down and read to your kids, but if it starts to spark an interest in reading early, it could work that way as well.So if you have a new reader that loves Mater, try this book. It just might spark a real interest in reading in the future.

My 4 1/2 year old's favorite characters from Cars are what he calls 'the bad cars' so he was really into watching them get in trouble and have to learn how to be 'good cars'. He likes the stickers in the back as well. It's been part of our regular bedtime reading rotation for weeks now.

Pretty weak story

Our five year-old son LOVES this book and has requested it to be read to him almost every night over the last few weeks. I almost have it memorized. :-) The story is an easy read before bedtime or any time. It is also simple enough that he can begin reading it to himself, since he's now learning to read. Each page has simple words and short sentences with fun pictures and bright colors. And each story has a nice moral to teach. Best of all, this particular book has stickers our son enjoys receiving as a reward each time we read it.The Step into Reading series 2 books are very nice starter books for a child who is learning to read. But it's quick read, so if you're looking for a book to read at bedtime, you might want to add a number of other books like this. I read three or four of these a night before he starts to fall asleep.

This book was a present for my granddaughter who absolutely loves the cars. She enjoyed the book which she calls her comic book and continues to read & enjoy the story. Age appropriate for 3-5 year olds.

My son loves these books.

My 4 year old son loved it. Bright, colorful pictures, large print words that are easy to read. A good choice for kids who enjoy Cars charactors.

Always, these stories are wonderful for the children to read at their level. The step into reading is a great tool for teaching children to read.

In THE BREAST CANCER PREVENTION DIET, Dr. Bob Arnot considers breast cancer in terms of its causes, its pathology, its treatment, and its relation to other cancers. Dr. Arnot tries hard to keep the medical jargon down to a minimum but his opening discussion of estrogen receptors might be a bit too deep for those with little medical backgound. Nevertheless, his analyses of the underlying causes represent what was then (1998) cutting edge technology and still holds relevance today. His position that certain foods may actually reduce the incidence of breast cancer or even eliminate it is far less controversial than some of his detractors hold who insist that obesity rather than diet is the determining factor. For Dr. Arnot, diet is supremely important not only for the standard nutrients like vitamins and minerals, but also for the less well-known presence (or absence) or more exotic elements like Omega-3 fish oils, antioxidants, and genistein. Arnot connects a number of loose nutritional threads like fiber, body fat, insulin levels and soy and flax products that synergistically interact to reduce if not eliminate breast cancer. Arnot is fond of charts as he uses them judiciously to list and rank various subcategories of anti-breast cancer components. For example, for those who wish to increase their intake of Omega-3 fatty acids but do not wish to do so by tablet supplementation, his chart on page 88 identifies from highest to lowest those fish foods that are particularly rich in that oil. He later addresses an often overlooked factor in cancer growth: the glycemic index that identifies foods that on one level seem healthy due to nutritional content but on another contain excess glucose to the extant that blood sugar diseases like diabetes would become likely. Much of his other advice is rock solid and well-known. His chapter on fiber clearly explains what it is, how it operates, and how it can reduce both body weight and breast cancer. Here he presents another handy chart that lists common fiber rich breakfast cereals by name. He finishes with erudite analyses of antioxidant capacities of selected fruits and vegetables, chemical estrogen avoidance strategies, and what he terms "road maps" as breast cancer prevention plans. The advice he writes of is not limited to women. If men were to follow the same advice they would benefit in ways not limited to avoiding breast cancer. In fact, Dr. Arnot's book can be seen as a general guide to good health that just happens to have a particular use toward breast cancer. Good advice, he notes, has more than one focus.

A really good and very detailed book.Way back in 1979 I bought the first books concerning foods, but over the years since then the science knowing and ideas have changed. Mostly I bought this book, even though it's a printing from way back in 1998 and I owe many newer books, because it has much writing concerning soy compared to in the newer books I looked in. But I must say that I'm astonished to find how good and informing it is concerning what's also in all the other kind of foods. And it's excellent with the containing of many good and very detailed tables where we among other learn that referring to antioxidant capacity then garlic is the best of the vegetables and strawberry the best of fruits.3 month ago my wife was trough a breast cancer surgery and after that the doctor told her not to eat soy, which she had not been eating much of before, only sometimes little tofu, even though she is born in Thailand. So I wanted to learn more about soy.And the book is also good in the much writing telling about the both good and bad sides of estrogen and also concerning cholesterol, and the connection between them. But I'm missing the information that there are these three estrogen compounds found in our body: estrone, estradiol and estriol, of which estriol are the good one. But I've only found this stated in a few books printed after 2002 so maybe it was not much known before then. But concerning the soy it in the book is explained why either too little or too much of soy can be bad. And many other things are explained, for example omega-3, omega-6 and omega-9. And I will have a talk with the doctor concerning blood measuring and putting my wife on omega-3 pills instead of the pills (Femara) he ordered. She had the smallest possibly case of cancer, and he took the whole breast! And again. A really excellent book with many interesting details!

A recent essay titled "A Deeper Consideration" by the poet, essayist and journalist, Clive James explores the virtues of concision, reflection, and thought in poetry as opposed to mere wordy surface glitter or confessional self-expression. James discusses the works of the American poet Samuel Menashe (b. 1925( to illustrate his claims of what is valuable in poetry. Here is a short poem by Menashe titled "Beachhead" that James carefully discusses."The tide ebbsFrom a helmetWet sand embeds"Menashe served as an infantryman during WW II at the Battle of the Bulge. Other than this poem, Menashe wrote little about his war experiences. Yet. James properly observes that "there is a whole war" in these tight three lines. James continues: "[The poet] makes his war a nation's war. The deeper consideration is that he was one among many, and, unlike too many, he lived to speak. That he speaks so concisely is a condition of his testament: consecration and concentration are the same thing. This is a world away from the expression of the self. This is bedrock."Born to Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe, Menashe described his poetical influences as the short poems of William Blake and the Hebrew Bible. He was an obscure figure in American poetry until the Poetry Foundation established a "Neglected Masters Award" for Menashe on the occasion of his 80th birthday. At the same time, the American Poets Project, part of the Library of America, published this volume of Menashe's "New and Selected Poems" in 2005, with a short essay by Menashe, quotations from various poets on his work, and an introduction by Christopher Ricks. In 2008, the American Poets Project edition was expanded to include ten additional poems. I am using the 2008 edition in this review.Menashe's poetry is short, deeply thought through, and filled with meaning. It doesn't categorize well as either modernist or traditional. The poems are generally in brief lines with every word, and the form, telling. The poems often rhyme in part and make great use of alliteration, homynyms, and suggestion. Some of the poems celebrate the everyday. They frequently are set in New York City where Menashe has lived in the same unpretentious walk-up flat since the early 1950s. But many of the poems are rural, set in woods, fields, or near the water. Death, including the poet's pending death (Menashe is still active), his friends, and his mother's is a preoccupation. Love and love affairs are described, if only elliptically. Some of the poems are whimsical. Most of poetry reaches out beyond its few words to show a concern for spiritual questions. Here is a poem titled "Windows: Old Widow" which several contributors to the American Poets Project volume use to illustrate the character of Menashe's art."There is a pillowOn the window sill --Her elbow room --In the twin windowEnclosed by a grillPlants in pots bloomOn the window sill"I want to quote two poems out of many that I particularly liked that I have not seen referred to by other writers on Menashe. The first, set in New York City, as is the above poem, is titled "Tenement Spring"."Blue month of May, make usLight as laundry on linesWind we do not see, mind usEarly in the morning"The second poem is untitled and is part of a series of little poems that comment upon Biblical passages."Leah bribed JacobWith mandrake rootsTo make himLie with herTake my poems"Menashe's poems reminded me of the short poetry of Charles Reznikoff (1894 -- 1976). Like Menashe, Reznikoff was born to immigrants from Eastern Europe. Reznikoff wrote in obscurity for years in a style that was both concentrated and highly personal. Like Menashe, Reznikoff lived in New York City, and many of his poems have an urban setting. And both writers show a strong Jewish influence even though neither appears traditionally religious.Readers interested in modern poetry that is slightly off the beaten path will love this collection of Menashe's poems. As with much else, the Library of America is to be commended for publishing this volume and making Menashe's work available. The essay by Clive James discussed in this review is taken from the September 2010 issue of "Poetry" magazine.Samuel Menashe died on August 22, 2011.Robin Friedman

Powerful. Very short poems; every word counts. Menashe's work is totally unique: no one else that I've ever read does such short poems --some are only a few lines -- but they are the very essence of poetry-- the concentration of each word. Words fail me cause I'm NOT a poet; but his work is terrific.

Menashe is of no school. His mastery of language is as good or better than any poetic contemporary. If Blake was writing now it would be somethink akin

I discovered this poet through a blog called "37 Days." So glad I looked for his book and ordered it: it's fabulous! His work is so spare yet so profound. I find it hard to describe or write about poetry (well, I used to do it when in college in the dark ages...) because it speaks for itself.I recommend this book and this poet with no reservations. If you are a poet, you will love it. If you love poetry, you will appreciate this stunning work.

I love this poet, such economy of word, but this book is a meager showing of his work, and therefore, overpriced. Maybe there isn't much to publish? Poetry Magazine gave Menashe $50,000. just before he died. Finally, recognition. Did early grad student readers/judges screen him out because he had no U Iowa credentials?

Discovered this poet in my reading......interesting......wanted to see what his stuff was like....poetry is so subjective....it is good but not my cup of tea especially....I will probably just pass it on to someone else to see if they care for it.

Well I must say that it is about time this poet, Samuel Menashe is receiving some of the recognition in this country he so richly deserves. Long known in Britain and other European countries, this American poet, who has lived most of his life in New York has had, for me, a bewildering problem having his work published in the United States, and certainly he falls into the category, as awarded by the Poetry Foundation - American Poets Project, as the winner of the Neglected Masters Award. It is quite difficult to find a pidgin hole in which to thrust Menashe's work into and I hate to try as I am quite averse to stuffing anything but pidgins into pidgin holes. His writing has been described as "spiritual," which indeed it is, but it certainly cannot be categorized as religious. His poems have been noted to be "Zen Like," which I suppose indeed they are. One of the problems of using either spiritual or Zen like is that both word mean so many different things to so many different people. Zen has been used to describe everything from golf to motorcycle repair and beyond, and spiritual is such a overused "buzz word," that I hate to apply it to a work that is...well, so different.I suppose I will use "contemplative and profound," which seems vague enough for my purposes in this review. I suppose the reader of Menashe's work can pick Zen like, spiritual, contemplative, profound, or if all else fails, make up their own descriptive word or description. Which ever you pick, I am sure it will work for you.I do know that the author of these poems is a word miser, or perhaps it would be better stated that he gets more mileage out of a single word than most poets get out of five or six pages. Sparse, bare to the bone, total impact, stunning and well...thoughtful....you really have to read this stuff to fully grasp the wonder of this writer's words and thoughts. In 1960 he wrote:AlwaysWhen I was a boyI lost things -I am stillForgetful -Yet I daresayAll will be foundOne dayIn 2006 he wrote:AlwaysWhen I was a boyI lost things -I am stillForgetful -Yet I daresayAll will be lostOne dayAutobiography:Who is motherOf more than oneIs not the sameAs the motherOf an only sonWho never becameAnyone's father -still only a sonAs an old man -What I have not doneMade me who I am.It is said that some of this mans work is of the rhyming mode and that is so but do take note that we never ever see silly rhyming couplets set mindlessly to paper. Rather than "rhyming" I prefer to use the word "rhythm" which I feel is a better description. There is a rhythm to this work and it is most noticeable, as with all poetry, when read aloud. Rather amazing stuff, really.Even though the author was a rifleman in the heat of things during the Battle of the Bulge, we are not talking any war poems here. On the other hand, no human I know could live through an experience like that and not be affected in some way and indeed, this does show thorough here and there in his poetry. The issue of death is well addressed, but on the other hand, so is life.I first became aware of Menashe's work in the late 1960s, or perhaps it was the early 1970s...years now blur for me and I have difficulty pinpointing a specific chronologic time and rely more and more on events to place things. I do know that when I first heard his work I was selling a pint of blood a week as we were quite broke and the good people at the blood bank were paying me fifteen dollars; a fortune for us at the time. During one of our weekly get-togethers, a young lady friend of ours read several of his poems from a book she had purchased somewhere in Europe and I remember that it had quite an impact on not only myself, but all the others that were together at that time. Since then I have run across bits and pieces of his work scattered here and there, but always in small doses. You cannot imagine the thrill I had when I came across this wonderful volume...At last, a full helping! It has been wonderful!Do yourself a big time favor and go out an buy a copy of this one, or check it from the library, or go ahead and steal one (as long as it is not my copy), it will be will worth your time and any risk that may be involved. I find this work is best read in the quite of the night or before a long run or bike trip...it gives you something to mull over and it is quite bewildering what this mans words can conjure up in your mind.Don BlankenshipThe Ozarks

Excellent book & fast delivery!!!! THANK YOU!!!!

I already had a copy of this book and bought another for one of my graduating high school students. He's exceptionally bright and the most comic book literate student I've ever had the pleasure to teach. The encoded reader knows the X-Men beyond the movies and can use that knowledge as a foundation for grasping various elements of philosophy, clearly presented by the authors. However, knowledge of the X-Men isn't merely a sneaky tool used to teach philosophy. On the contrary, the authors do an excellent job showing the applicability of philosophy to comic book characters and issues, which in turn have implications for our world. Readers, then, can expect to learn a bit about philosophy, to enhance their understanding and appreciation of the X-Men and other Marvel mutants, and to see the relevance and value of philosophy for gaining a broader, richer, more discursive understanding of reality. Additionally, it's an enjoyable read.

An X-cellent guide to the depths of the "X-Men" comics and films, while touching upon poignant philosophical milestones within both universes.

I am not reviewing this...I just did this to submit the rating system on here. I don't think this is ever necessary!

I bought this as a Kindle e-book. Kindle for Android is great, this book isn't. I didn't need to read more than 10 pages of this book to realize it was useless. So far it has only talked about abnormality (he refers to homosexuals grouping together as "queers with queers") and the only examples of any mutants it refers to are inaccurate and based solely off the X-Men movies. So far, all the assessments have been off-base by citing the commercialized and distorted X-men movies as fact for the Marvel Universe. I am not even going to finish this book, and I already wish I could get my money back. Lesson learned: Never buy a book because of its title.

For those of us who cannot really understand Descartes or Kant or Leibnitz or Spinoza or Hobbes or Kierkegaard, much less so connect their teachings to life in this postmodern world, this book is a bridge from the past to the future. What does one do when one knows one is a comic book character (Deadpool)? What does one do when you wake up without memory, or your genes have expressed a new part of themselves overnight (Wolverine, Beast)? This book asks these questions and more.As Socrates put it, the unexamined life is hardly worth living. Read this book and one will hardly be able to keep oneself from examining!

First of all, I would like to respond to one of the reviews below:Where that reviewer asks if the book's authors read the comic books, I would ask whether he/she read the book itself. Characters that appear exclusively in the comics (like Layla Miller) have entire chapters devoted to them, and one chapter's author even denounces the movies in favor of the comics. Not sure how he/she missed that...Anyway."X-Men and Philosophy" is a must-have for Marvel fans. It explores every nook and cranny of the X-men universe and makes dozens of superb philosophical connections -- some of them expected, like the question of "what is normal and should we want it", and some more surprising, like the discussion of whether mind-reading is ethical. Just take a look at the table of contents and you'll see the wide spectrum that is explored in the book, all of it interesting. The great thing about the book is how accessible it is. It's not just for people who are interested in philosophy, but for any smart person who has an interest in X-men. I felt that I was reading a book that explored X-Men from an intellectual point of view, including science and religion as well as straight-up philosophy. It's also incredibly engaging and personal. All or most of the chapters present concepts that apply not only to mutants but to us ordinary folk as well, and there are a lot of personalized examples that help a layperson relate to and understand what's being discussed. I felt like I was reading about myself as well as Kant and Magneto.Ultimately it's a book that reaches a great balance between scholarly philosophical discussion and colloquial easy-reading, and is interesting no matter what the reader's experience with philosophy. The writing is consistently witty and the subject matter is everything an X-Men fan could want. 5 stars!

Housel, Wisnewski, and the rest have done a bang-up job of linking philosophy and the Marvel comic book series X-Men. I found that popular culture and philosophy books are a great way to get into philosophy, which is an otherwise dense (albeit eternally interesting) subject. I learned more about the X-Men than I had previously thought possible. Not only is this book a good read, but you can learn a lot. There's lots of stuff from the comics as well as the movies, and something is brought to the table for everyone.I also really liked the rendering of Dr. Wisnewski into an X-Man, which appeared in his chapter of the book.

Here on Earth (Oprah's Book Club), by Alice Hoffman

Amazon.com Review

Oprah Book Club® Selection, March 1998: Here on Earth is set in motion when March Murray and her teenage daughter travel from their California home to New England. Their stay is to be brief. Judith Dale, her childhood housekeeper-cum-foster mother, has died, and March must set things to right and get out of gloomy Jenkintown as quickly as possible. "Five days tops," she reassures her scientist husband. Instead, she is pulled back into the arms of Hollis, her first love--an avaricious, Heathcliff-like individual who radiates sulfur and cruelty. "She left and didn't come back, not even when he called her, and yet here she is, on this dark night; here and no place else." In this deep fable of loss and control, love and fear, Alice Hoffman allows us into her characters' cores and makes us wish their fortunes were happier. Here on Earth is filled with wisdom, what-ifs, and animals who seem, if not to know more than human beings, at least to know how to shy from danger.

I was prepared to love this novel as much as I have most of Hoffman's work. The imagery and sensory experience of the setting did not disappoint, however, I did find the antagonist to be lacking in the sympathetic qualities that would have made him so attractive to the protagonist. In addition, the ending kind of came out of nowhere as though the author was tired of writing and just wanted to wrap it up which I found disappointing. I realize this is a highly acclaimed piece of work and one could certainly do much worse, but as an avid Alice Hoffman fan, I didn't find it to be her best.

Alice Hoffman called this novel her homage to Bronte. I think it did a great job of bringing the character of Heathcliffe and putting his abusive and obsessive behavior into a modern setting. It's a very unpleasant story but it also did a lot to show how domestic violence can creep into someone's life. The character of Gwen was my favorite. At first she seemed like a moody annoying teen but quickly became the most fully formed and clever of the characters. She was inspirational in her humanity. There were magical elements to the novel like the racehorse Tarot and the legend of the foxes and the ever oppressive plague of rabbits. The many ways love can be toxic and destructive is explored.I really enjoyed this novel and found it very readable but sadly it didn't grip me enough to think about reading it multiple times like I have with Wuthering Heights. Still I highly recommend it.

Even though I found the book hard to put down, I had a number of problems with it. I picked up on the similarities to Wuthering Heights quite soon, and then read that it was the author's homage to Bronte. That was great, as I love that book. But Hollis was only a sympathetic character when he was very young, and March, who seemed at first to be a sensible woman, did things I couldn't believe she would do--especially with her daughter there. I became disgusted with both of them. But I have loved many of Alice Hoffman's books, and this won't keep me from reading more of them, as I love her writing.

Here on Earth was a beautifully crafted novel of real life, tragic stories, intricate characters and a peek into the life of a woman who visits her past and then can't break free.I LOVED this novel for so many reasons. Firstly, I didn't measure it against any other novel, written by Hoffman or anyone else. As a stand alone story, it was absolutely stunning. March, the mother, Gwen, the daughter and the whole cast of tragic characters in this small town were fleshed out brilliantly. The story of Gwen falling back into her past relationship with a person she'd pledged her love to as a teenager, the slippery slope downward and the daughter's voice of reason was so compelling, I was turning Kindle pages long into the night.Don't be deterred by the low star reviews here. If you don't go into this novel expecting it to be a repeat of your favorite Hoffman novel, you will love how the book keeps you racing to the ending.

Wow. Just wow. I ran across a quote from the book "Here on Earth" by Alice Hoffman on one of my favorite blogs, Everyday Strange, and it piqued my curiosity enough to fork over some dough for a read slightly different than my go-to. It was so worth every penny."Here on Earth" by Alice Hoffman is a love story unlike any others I've ever read.  It's like six love stories crafted together into one beautifully written novel that highlights both the beauty and the pain that we are willing to endure to follow our hearts to the end of Earth and beyond. And of course the last few paragraphs gutted me to the point I couldn't sleep for a good hour despite the late hour I sacrificed finishing it cover to cover yesterday, though you'd have to read the entire book for it to enrapture you the same way. What I disliked: It switched perspectives a lot. One paragraph would be from the teenagers mind. Two paragraphs later it would be from the moms perspective. It was hard to get used to, but once I did it was lovely. I also disliked the amount of extramarital affairs; however the reviews did indicate it would be secretively dark so I should have guessed. What I liked: It was beautifully written, thought provoking and in a tone I haven't felt in a while. It really spoke volumes about the power of love and how it compels us to be something else - something more - something new. It also described a season, (in life as well as the weather) so astonishingly well that I'm not going to even try to give it words. Alice Hoffman captured a feeling, something unrepeatable.  I find myself thinking about certain aspects of the book during random times of the day - in the car driving, talking with a stranger, or just trying to understand my own world. Shockingly I would relive the pain that book sends you through a hundred times more just to be blessed enough to read it again.

I read this because I am a fan of Hoffman. Her poetic descriptions begin Here on Earth, causing me to slow down and feel the words. Her writing is always good, but this book made me feel like I was in two stories. One included the characters, which are richly developed. The second story I felt as if some interference came in and hi-jacked the reason for the story. The ending was rushed, for me. I am not a fan of dropping off characters, which I feel happened with (SPOILER ALERT) Gwen. The main character, March Murray, becomes secluded into a psychosis of love until she disappears. After such strong development, I would like the know something about the conclusion of March. Instead it ended with a sub-characters moment. Four stars for effort, great writing and gripping story of love-confusion.

From Booklist

Perhaps it starts with an avocado pit precariously suspended on toothpicks in a water glass, or maybe an island vacation instilled a fondness for fresh-picked papaya. Whatever the source of inspiration, the reality of successfully propagating and growing tropical plants is something most gardeners never get to experience, yet a wide variety of both familiar and exotic plants can be grown inside the home with very little effort. Whether intrigued by the culinary possibilities of using one’s own lemons or olives, or attracted to the ornamental attributes of a fragrant or vibrant blossom, tropical plants offer a wealth of edible and decorative possibilities. From the Australian Finger Lime to the Tahitian Orange, Kumquat to the Sunquat, each plant’s cultural requirements are provided in pithy descriptions that include recipes. Fun facts, handy tips, and eye-popping color illustrations and photographs round out a comprehensive yet accessible guide that will fascinate and inspire both beginning and established gardeners. --Carol Haggas

I don't have a green thumb. At all. I need all the help I can get to grow stuff. This book is somewhat helpful in letting me grow food-bearing tropical plants. At this point I have a roughly 50% survival rate- which for me is pretty good. *shame*The book has helped some, but not as much as I'd hoped it would; still, it's raised my survival rate to 50% from maybe 25%, so that's a huge improvement. It's definitely inspirational- I want to get more tropical plants-= and try to help them survive!

I was really looking forward to this book as I love growing lemons and other tropical plants but sadly this book contained no more information than typically seen on the tag or in a catalogue.I have seen more complete information online for free. Example: likes full sun or protect roots from getting waterlogged. Very vague and basic. No specific fertilizer recommendations either. I would not rebuy and feel the book is highly overpriced for something easily read in less than an hour with no true information. Nice photos but I wasn't interested in photos. I wanted growing information. Surprised by the high reviews as they are seeing something I didn't.

I bought this book hoping to learn a few tricks to make my dwarf citrus thrive. The book's writers claim that the book is user friendly and easy to understand but I think that they should find an editor who doesn't know very much about the subject matter to point out exactly where they are not giving enough info to make it understandable. (I taught English, Science, and Music for 25 years so I think I am capable of figuring out an instructional book. It appears that they know their subject so well that they don't realize how much they are leaving out for a novice to understand.) It was a fun read, though, and it was interesting to see just how many varieties of dwarf fruit trees there are to grow indoors. Unfortunately, my lime tree is dead and my Meyer Lemon is dying. :(

I agree with many of the other reviewers for this book. The reviewer who listed all the sections of the book has it spot on. This is very nice for inspiration and helping you decide what types of plants you would like the grow - so basically it's great for kick-starting your interest. Application, however, will definitely take supplemental knowledge from other sources. If I were to decide to grow coffee in my house, for instance, I would say this book piqued my interest in growing it and gave a nice summary of how it could be done. But I would definitely need to do specific research on growing coffee, preferably indoors, which I can imagine could be hard to find. How do I help maintain a warm, humid climate for instance. More detail per plant would have brought this book up from four stars to five, in my opinion. All in all, I am glad I bought this book. It is very enjoyable and interesting to read and the pictures are nice. There is definitely some very useful information - I especially like some of the little additions like how to process what you grow to have a recognizable end product (i.e. cinnamon and coffee). If you hope to use this as your one and only source, though, you will be disappointed.

Great detail on how to care for, and use plants that produce many of the things in our fridge. Very little information on how to actually grow them from garbage scraps. You'll have to get another book for that. The authors work at Logees, a commercial greenhouse, so I assume they want you to buy from them. The book would have been five plus stars if there was detailed info about growing these items from things purchased at the grocery store.Nicely laid out, and decent graphics.

I expected to get a book full of great tips to help you grow tasty tropical plants in any home any where. Instead I got a book that is more of a history lesson than a practical guide to... well anything.I am disappointed with this book. There is little valuable information for the person who actually wants to grow tasty and tropical plants.Spend your money on seeds.***If you have a first generation Kindle then skip this book completely(do that anyway) the pages are chock full of pictures(with color?) and the formatting is deplorable.***

Very helpful book written by the folks at Logee's Gardens, so it covers their tropical plants for sale as well as any other tropicals you find. Good illustrations and explanations, but could be even more descriptive of requirements. I'm growing lemongrass, papaya, coffee, kefir lime, decorative orange, and hardy kiwis. Helped me select proper pots - clay - and learn soil requirements, watering, temperature needs, soil requirements.

As a mom of three active, nature-oriented young boys, I can definitely recommend this book. I had checked it out from the library but found it so useful I decided to buy it. This is a great book on growing fruit indoors. As others have noted, it may not be exhaustive information on each plant. But, if you're looking for a review of the edible plants that you could grow indoors, this is a nice place to start. You definitely get enough information to asses the pros and cons of each plant and to know if the plant is a good fit for your indoor environment. From there, you can choose your plants and do online searches to get more detailed plant care information.

I really enjoyed reading about several new (to me) tropical fruiting plants that can be grown in the home. I was afraid that many of these unusual plants would only available from Logees, (the author is affiliated with Logees Greenhouse) - but after reading it, I just had to go online and look for some of them. Sure enough, the most frequent resource that searches located was Logees. The great news is that I ordered a couple of plants from Logees and they were excellent, good-sized and well-grown plants.I was particularly interested in the Miracle Berry - a small fruit that changes the mouth chemistry for a few hours so that even a lemon tastes sweet. I found the plant at several places, but NONE of the others offered the large size that I found here. After a couple of months my plant still looks big and healthy, so hopefully it'll make it to the fruiting stage!
