I have been searching for a good stranger danger book for a while now. I recently looked at The Berenstain Bears stranger book that is recommended by many but didn’t like that one at all. “Not Everyone Is Nice” was a good buy......given the difficult subject it’s an easy read and not scary. My 8 y/o liked this book a lot and it promoted a good deal of discussion. Teaching children to be cautious around strangers is important and necessary especially in this country. I found this book to be a good resource and tool for a parent with kids ages 4 to 8.

I would absolutely not recommend this book. My issue is that this book has many pages about a little girl and a stranger conversing, way too much of it is focused on this and my first thought was that it makes it super confusing for children to even get that far with strangers. I have been buying kids books for 12 years and this by far is the worst one yet. Too confusing for kids.

Purchased this for my 6 year old daughter. Wish I had known about this book about two years earlier (long story short - a man successfully got my daughters attention quietly while she was riding on the front of my grocery cart and she went directly to him - yes, I got her to come back to me). Since then, she will not speak to anyone until she looks at me for approval. This book did an outstanding job telling a story in a way that she could understand. I would recommend this book to any child at an earlier age that is old enough to go with a stranger.

Great book for helping kids understand the danger of strangers. Even if young ones don't fully understand the depth of the danger, if they come across a situation such as the one depicted, I am quite certain they will think about what was said in the book before making a decision such as to get into a car with someone. This is really a must read for all children.

I thought it was good for the toddlers and younger children. It's not. If you have a 4 year old or under, don't purchase. They don't understand and the book is too complicated. If the child is old enough- yes, its nice.

Terrible layout for Kindle. The pics are super tiny and the sentences are on the next page, every.single.time. Buy the paperback, don’t waste money on the kindle edition. Awful.

This will be too long to keep my almost 4 year old's attention. I will probably hang on to it until he is 5 and then read it. Still looking for a book appropriate for his age.

This book is excellent for helping children understand the seriousness of talking to strangers. As an elementary school counselor, I have been reading it to students in grades K and one every year for several years now. It covers the basic rules for safety and also holds the interest of the students. I will probably use it for years to come.

Mellie and Victor are young ones just coming into adulthood with all of the growing pain challenges. One can't get away from destiny. Like Taliyah said, if it was meant to be, it will be, Que sera sera. I enjoyed reading this story. I don't normally read young love stories but this one has a lesson to give, especially for young girls about waiting to be sexually active.No matter how hard Taliyah and Alex tried to shelter their family from the old La Familia way of live, it comes back crashing in on them in an unexpected way but their love is so strong for each other and their children,as well Maliyah, they weather the storm though anything. They have given Mellie and Victor great examples of what a family should look like.I can't wait to read Alex's story when it's published.

I have to give the combination of book 1 & book 2 a 5 star rating. I'm amazed that these were some of Blue Saffire's very early writings. She is one of my favorite authors. I will say that I enjoyed book 2 slightly more than book 1 but neither disappoints. However I recommend that you read them both to truly enjoy Destiny 2. The characters love and devotion to each other draw you in and in this case truly like father like son.

I truly enjoy this book. At first I was apprehensive about the book because of the age of the main characters being the mother of a 16 year old son, but the story was told very tastefully.This is not a regular Blue Saffire book, but it was just as good as her other works. Can't wait to read Alex's story.

Of course I loved Vic and Meliyah's story. Meliyah the pure and sensitive hood rat meets temperamental boy next door, Victor. Also enjoyed spending more time with Tali and Alex and how they show their love for each other and their children.Beautifully done!

This is a great read! Alex and Tahli as adults .. Best couple ever! Keep reading for the love and happiness

Great Author but this one was just ok to me

Remember Juan Santos? Juan died the summer after Victor. Don't remember? Read Destiny 1. It's sixteen years later, Alex and Tali have built a full rich life for themselves and their children. They've left the Towers and La Mafia behind, or so they thought. Until one night, the past rings their doorbell. Meet Juan's sixteen year old baby girl. The H and h in this story are young. Both are high schoolers in their junior year. However, the story is still written where is holds the interest of more mature readers. Ms. Saffire's writing is such that you empathize with the h's desire to belong and to be loved by family. And, you will cry with the twins Alex and Victor. It's a sweet tale of two young people from two different worlds finding their soulmates as the past of their parents collide with their present, and, almost destroys their future. There are bumps along the way and even a moment of "please, not again". Alex and Tali provide a little heat. Okay, they provide a lot of heat. This is not a cliffhanger. There is a seque to the next book. I look forward to Alex's story. Everyone is older. I can't wait to see what' destiny has instore for the family.

This installment of the Destiny series was much better than the first one I read. I almost did not read it because I felt I probably would not enjoy it. Not that the first one was bad - it just did not live up to my expectations from this particular author. Good Job on this book. It was heart wrenching, but full of such family love and loyalty. It should be an inspiration to young people that having sex before you are ready, is not always an expression of love, and the right person is willing to wait if they really care for you.Cannot wait for the next book from Blue Saffire's other series, especially Legally Bound.

I was very excited about this book at first the recipes look simple and easy to follow until I started looking closer she calls for essential oils that do not exist such as BlackBerry and there is vanilla essential oil in many of the recipes a true vanilla essential oil does not exist and the vanilla absolute is very expensive I made the Tangerine Dream bar twice once with the full amount of tumeric the second time with half the amount of tumeric and both times the bar was orange it looks nothing like the picture and then I made the pink magic soap with the Himalayan pink salt and it was not pink it was a cloudy white so far none of the recipes have come out looking like the pictures

I purchased this book because I wanted some nice and easy melt-and-pour recipes. With lots of little ones underfoot, I don't want to mess around with lye. I'd never be able to get anything made!So far, I've made two of the recipes in the book: the brown sugar and vanilla soap and the lavender soap. The instructions were easy to follow and the soaps smelled wonderful and worked well. However, neither looked anything like the pictures in the book.For the brown sugar and vanilla soap, the picture shows a bar that looks similar in color to a Neutrogena bar. When I added the specified amount of vanilla essential oil, the mixture turned almost black. Still pretty, but not what I expected. The second time I made it, I just added a few drops of vanilla EO to darken the soap slightly and add fragrance.The lavender soap only lists three ingredients: olive oil suspension base, dried lavender flowers, and lavender essential oil. Yet the soap pictured is a deep, translucent purple. Not having any experience in soapmaking, I assumed that either the essential oil or the lavender flowers would provide the colorant. Of course, neither did. The lavender EO is clear and the flowers, while beautiful and fragrant, did not leach any type of color into the mixture. I basically wound up with a clear bar dotted with small flower heads. Still pretty, but again, not what I expected.

I use this as a reference, I haven't made every soap recipe that is in here but the few that I have tried are absolutely gorgeous I love it and I've shared my products with my family and friends and they agree as well. It is great for beginners, they are simple easy to follow soap recipes, I have nothing to complain about only positive experiences with it. I highly recommend it to others who are curious to try and make homemade soaps. I've seen some videos on soap making but for some reason my never come out smelling like they say in the videos and some don't have that aesthetic aspect to them. This book helps me get inspired to make mine look as nice as they smell.

I wish the book would have told more, i.e. degrees to heat the soap, what degree (how hot) should the soap be to add color & scent, etc. I ended up just going online and researching it all anyway. Disappointed. Just gave the very basics plus recipes you can find online. Nice pictures and tutorials for the newbie.

This is a great book to give you ideas to make tasteful and natural looking soaps. I do like the authors design sense and ingredient lists a lot. Simple and natural, as far as glycerin soap making goes. But as some others here have mentioned, the soaps that I tried to make from this book ended up looking nothing like the pictures shown. I tried to make the lemon poppy seed soap and the coloring was nothing like what was shown. Instead of a subtle lemon color, I ended up with a deep curry. I had this issue with two other recipes that I tried and the more I learned about soap making, the more I found the recipes in this book lacking, unclear or deceptive. In fact, the recipe for "Building Blocks" calls for Kelp and Tumeric to be used as colorants. But it is obvious when looking at the picture in the book that the soaps were made with a store bought mica. Weird!Still, I find myself returning to this book again and again to get ideas. I don't trust the recipes, but the designs are lovely and the ingredient list gives me ideas in terms of how to incorporate natural ingredients to my glycerin soap. So with all it's faults, I am still glad I bought this book.

LOVE THIS BOOK!!! It's the first of all the books I've purchased for melt and pour soaps that have easy to understand recipes... Nice and colorful pages too.

This is a nice book if you want to get into making your own melt & pour soap. There are many creative ides that are easy and cost-friendly. There are indeed a few that are a stretch for me ingredient-wise. But nonetheless I definitely recommend the book. You will find it to be an informative source. Great pictures and easy to follow instructions.

Good recipes. Wish there was a bit more information on conversions if you add or subtract bitters or oils and change out essential oils with fragrance oils and vice Versace.

This beautifully written book by the author of Kentucky Straight and other prose works actually comprises two interwoven memoirs. In the first, Offutt describes the year he returns to Rowan County, KY, to teach at his alma mater, Morehead State University, hoping to resume the life he remembers from 20 years earlier. In the second, Offutt's 80-year-old in-laws, both Holocaust survivors, recount their horrific experiences as Polish-Jewish prisoners of the Nazis during World War II. Offutt takes a risk by attempting to intertwine such disparate lives in one narrative. But he manages to carry it off successfully because what he is really examining is the concept of home, which for both the author and his in-laws is ultimately an illusion that can never be recaptured once it has been lost. Offutt's sparse prose elegantly reflects the people involved, whether the speaker is the author, his mother- or father-in-law, or one of his now-adult boyhood Kentucky friends. Offut goes home to his hillbilly roots while interviewing his in laws about their holocaust experiences...two unlikely world are paralleled...a human story on many levels...beautiful sentences and moments in the book

A great story about trying to go home, a wonderful Kentucky tale.

I knew chris in morehead. I could of done without the school bashing.

Perhaps I've done this book a disservice by reading it right after Homer Hickam's Rocket Boys, another memoir of life in the hills (West Virginia vs. Kentucky). Mr. Hickam's prose was so vivid and his story so compelling that I think just about any memoir would suffer in comparison.I just couldn't get through this book. The book alternates between chapters of Mr. Offutt's return to teach college within 10 miles of where he was born and grew up and the story of his in-laws' survival of the Holocaust. I'm a buy-and-hold reader and I resist being jerked around between stories and narrators. Even if there's a reason for it -- building his "you can't go home again" theme, I would guess -- it's too jarring. And, anyway, the horrors his in-laws suffered just make the author and his tale of woe sound whiny.Beyond that, I just found a huge difference between Mr. Hickam writing about his childhood as he lived it and Mr. Offutt's looking back at his childhood. In both cases, you sense a great affection for their place of birth, but in Mr. Offutt's case, it's from a great remove. I missed being immersed in the moment.I do enjoy Mr. Offutt's writing, but I think I ought to begin with the memoir other reviewers have mentioned, The Same River Twice.

I heard Mr. Offutt on the Radio, National Public Radio, talking about this book about "going back home". "Returning home" has been a dimension in my own life, so, I connected with the author's observations.The radio interview with Mr. Offutt piqued my curiosity and this is the first book I have read of his. So, that being said, unlike other reviewers, I have read no other works of his to compare this one to (which other reviewers have).I knew the book was about returning home to Eastern Kentucky. I read the jacket cover of the book where it revealed that Mr. Offut now lives in Iowa City, Iowa. So, before I read the first page, I surmised that he went back home to Kentucky but for some reason didn't stay there. This was confusing? Maybe confusing is the wrong word. Disappointing - dismaying. It was obvious before even starting the book that going back "home" didn't work out.I went to college also in the Appalachian mountains and Offutt's descriptions of the Kentucky Mountains, ridges and hollows (hollers), was evocative and brought me back to those days of my own. His interactions with his former teachers and friends were good I thought. He runs into a former girlfriend and briefly thinks about what could have been with her for about two paragraphs. He talks about his adolescence.I too have been involved in college teaching and I found his descriptions of reaching out to one or two of his special students quite poignant and very real. I found his descriptions of interacting with town folk with special language and gestures quite accurate. He painted a good picture in my mind and I only wish there was more of it! His anecdote about going into the bank for a mortgage loan was a great piece of writing as he paints the picture of getting the loan without even having his college teaching job signed, sealed and delivered yet.I agree with the other reviewers who have mentioned the Chapters about the Holocaust. Offutt's in laws are survivors of the Holocaust and he intersperses chapters about them and their war time experiences throughout his own memoir. It is like two books in one but it did not work for me. I like the Kentucky part that are Offutt's own, not his transcription of his in laws talking about themselves into a microcassette recorder. Right now, I do not want to read a book about the Holocaust, and I felt deceived a little to find that material interspersed in his own personal memoir. Maybe this is some creative device that went over my head? If so, someone please explain it to me.I rated the book lower than 5 stars for the reason of the Holocaust chapters. I greatly enjoyed the Kentucky chapters. If I want to read books about the Holocaust, I will get those when I choose to.ajdjr73@aol.com

In many ways, this work is more complex than you would first think. Note the various reviews here. This work seems to bring out all sorts of emotions. This work is not easy to review. I suppose the best place to start is to state my humble opinion in reference to a couple of points. First, I don't think that the author was actually "putting down" the good folks in his old home town. I think he was just calling it the way he saw it. I have traveled through this area of the country extensively, spent quite a lot of time there. To be honest, the author nailed a certain segment of the population quite well. Now let me state that I am from and live in the Ozarks is S.W. Missouri. Some of the folks here, myself included, make the people of the author's home down seem down right sophisticated. I have traveled and lived all over this country for more years than I care to admit to. To be quite frank, the people the author described here can be found in just about ever town in the U.S., from coast to coast. Kentucky does not have lock on "town characters." Secondly, the author indeed has some rather harsh things to say about Morehead State University. This was silly on the author's part. Schools are schools. I work with a lot of Harvard and Yale graduates that have far less "education" than a lot of Jr. College drop outs I work with. School is what you make of it after you get out. Those attending this college should not feel bad. After all, the author himself graduated from this "inferior school," made the most of it and seems to have done alright for himself.Now, as to the book: It is actually rather well written. I do like the author's style. The story was good, easy to follow and simply interesting. This is actually two books in one. The first is about the author and his family returning to the hills of Kentucky to teach and possibly make a difference. The second story is that of his in-laws, both of whom were Holocaust Survivors. At this point I will state that I think it a shame that the author choose to use this method to tell these two stories. Both really should have been extended and made into two separate works.The author is very, very good ad descriptions, the country, the people the background. The author is quite good a capturing emotions. Chris Offutt is obviously quite a talented writer. I should also note that a few other reviewers have stated that the author made most of the stories here up. I doubt that very much. The stories just ring too true. He may have done a bit of embellishment here and there, but is that not what most authors do?I am giving this one only four stars rather than five for two reasons. First, there is an element of "sour grapes" that runs through the story which I found unbecoming and secondly, I feel the author should have devoted an entire book to his in-laws and their stories.I do recommend this one highly. I hoped that I had ordered a cookbook for "gluten, dairy and sugar free recipes" for my use recipes had to include all three in each recipe; instead there were recipes for gluten free, recipes for sugar free, recipes for dairy free. Some of the recipes included two items, none included all three items.

Book was okay but small and offered limited ideas. I would suggest others books that provide more information and more menu options.

Yes, unfortunately, you are kidding me. This book is not what it represents itself to be. At least half the recipes have some form of either gluten, dairy, or sugar. It is a big disappointment, poorly researched, and assumes that "evaporated cane juice" is not sugar or Goat's milk is not a dairy food. My biggest objection, as a health professional, is that it is full of misleading and incorrect information (Ezekiel bread contains no wheat, for example.) It also makes little or no distinction as to which are the gluten or non-gluten grains. Definitely not what you are looking for if you are on a gluten-free, dairy-free, and/or sugar free diet.
