Selling his own seminar and "expertise" is unethical and therefore limits authenticity and reliability of content. When contacted author, his main objective is to sell grossly overpriced "how to" seminars that are not relevant or necessary.

I wish I had purchased this book prior to my first interview for an MSL position. The feedback I received after my interview was that I need to research the MSL role further and work on conveying why I want to be an MSL more clearly. This led me to Dr. Dyer’s book and I was astonished at how accurately he describes each step of the interview process, as if this is the playbook that all hiring managers follow. This book is exactly what I need as I continue my pursuit of becoming an MSL, and it is written precisely the way MSLs communicate – clearly, concisely, and professionally. I highly recommend this book.The (rare) negative reviews written are surprising to me and in my opinion very inaccurate. Having attended one of Dr. Dyer’s conferences I can state with certainty he is deeply committed to helping aspiring MSLs succeed and truly passionate about furthering the profession. I only wish I had discovered this book and the MSL Society sooner.

In a nutshell: all you need to knowAs I am approaching graduation, the MSL role caught my attention. Dr. Dyer’s guide provided me with a clear picture of what to expect in the hiring process alongside a clear definition and understanding of the role. The book is written concisely, has a clear structure and is free of any redundancy. You can see how his enormous expertise in the MSL field is condensed in this book, both in terms of content and writing style. After all, precise communication skills are crucial for this role.In regards to those negative reviews, a lack of specific examples is not something I see as an issue. On the contrary, considering the vast diversity of the field it would simply be too much, too overwhelming and let alone not feasible for a book of that format. As aforementioned, one of the books strengths is being concise in delivering the relevant messages. The book won’t do the work for you. Hard work is always warranted. It will however, help you to direct your hard work in the right direction.

It may, however, save you from performing unnecessary tasks and it may save you from doing the right thing the wrong way. But you, the job seeker, must still do the work. Much like a map on a hike, your legs still have to do the walking to where the guide tells you to go.Second, this is what the book IS about:* There are four parts to the book:Part 1 - The Medical Science Liaison Role - This section serves as the base for understanding the historical roles of the MSL in the pharmaceutical industry and it suggests the evolution of the role as we move forward.Part 2 - The MSL Job Search Strategy - This section is about doing your homework. Research everything. And it describes HOW you should conduct your research including the use of social networking. And equally important, an extensive review is given on crafting your CV and your cover letter. This area was especially important to me since I had been with the same company for nearly 2 decades and we didn't need CVs and cover letters to break into our fields. Again, I want to stress that it is up to you to do the research and to work on the CV and the cover letter...the book merely gives you a guide for what the hiring manager looks for in those documents. I have helped many students over the years to craft their documents and to have the visual appeal of their resumes and CVs but the book suggests some good pointers and highlights what will appeal to the hiring manager.Part 3 - The MSL Hiring Process - This section is largely self-explanatory regarding how to conduct phone screenings, phone interviews, and in-person interviews. The section, however, is still highly relevant. It serves as a primer for questions to think about. It also serves as sort of a checklist to make sure your "I's" are dotted and your "T's" are crossed. Imagine you are going on vacation and you pack everything. Or at least you thought you did. When you arrive at the hotel you realized you left your toothbrush and deodorant at home. Seems obvious to pack those two things, right? But we have all forgotten things like that on vacation. The difference, however, is that on vacation, you can go somewhere and pick up a toothbrush. In this case, with all the prep that you have taken (researching, crafting your documents, etc.), you don't want to be awarded an interview and not have your ducks in a row.Part 4 - Appendices - Useful information summarized in the final 10 pages.In summary, the book is easy to read. If you are motivated, you can properly display and market your skills with the techniques in this book. I plan on updating this evaluation as I continue on my journey.Maybe there will be a sequel that will hit the shelves for "How to Be Successful in the MSL Role"???

Randy Alcorn is a well-known Christian author. He proves his God-given writing talents for story-telling in "Deadline." This is much more than a well-written novel. There is a TON of theology packed into this narrative. Both liberal and conservative readers are challenged by biblical themes. It is amazing how many major societal and cultural issues are naturally tackled in this book's story line. I just finished my second time through the book, the last time reading it being in 2010, and I enjoyed it even more the second time through. If a liberally minded friend really wants a window into the Christian worldview, here is a great place to start. If a Christian would like a better understanding of liberal thinking, this book will help. This book will challenge you to think deeply about life and the afterlife.

It's a gripping Page-Turner of a mystery book.....hard to put down. Great fiction writing by excellent author of both fiction & non-fiction books. This book deals wonderfully with topics that are crucial & timely to what is hitting the media these days.... even though the book was written a decade ago; it's still timely. You learn a lot b/c it teaches you a lot about both sides of the issues. You learn through the conversations between characters. It's like a text book on life while coming across as a gripping & compelling story.There IS minimal violence, yes, simply b/c it is a murder mystery. But the violence is not recurring.The sexual content is only by reference only, nothing directly happening in any given scene, no detailed descriptions. It is necessary to the plot and the teaching going on.

Deadline is a well written, intriguing 424 page Christian mystery revolving around three friends and a car accident. The book is full of detailed and engrossing conversations on the issues of our day especially political correctness and moral relativism. In addition it offers many intriguing insights into the newspaper business and police and detective affairs. As always, Randy Alcorn also gives us a view of heaven that is inspiring and even thrilling. I don’t usually read novels or mysteries but on this one I took notes of things I want to remember. It is well worth reading!

Enjoyable StoryIn "Deadline", three childhood friends made it through Vietnam, marriage, children, and are now enjoying life. But death separated them, thought to be an accident, it was murder. Jake Woods, the journalist, is determined to find out who did this. He receives a strange note and begins working with a police detective and the FBI on solving the mystery. But it is much more. The storyline deals with lies and truth, assumed truths that turn out to be lies, questions of whom one should trust and not trust, redemption and damnation, and much more. Look for a surprise ending to the question of who-done-it. A highly recommended read that is sure to keep you turning from one page to the next.

One of my favorite fiction stories by Randy Alcorn. It is a great book to give to a non-Christian to introduce them to Christian themes/ideas as they are worked out practically in life. Specific questions about life after death are also answered with wisdom in practical ways. There is doubt, logic, caring, love and humanity all throughout the story. The characters are real and believable. Christians are not holier-than-thou and are often just like people you know. Non-Christians are not any more evil or bad than people you know in real life. This is a good book, that isn't a "bang someone over the head with a Bible" type, but more subtle - makes you think and is very entertaining for Christian and non-Christian alike.

This is a Christian book with a strong Christian message. It is written from a conservative Christian perspective and presents a powerful message about the authors viewpoint of the moral decline of our society. Randy Alcorn tackles the current message of political correctness and morality that is based on each person's personal truth in this book.This is a story full of suspense and intrigue about the everyday life of a very modern and liberal newspaper reporter. The book grabs you from the first page. There are three friends hanging out on Sunday afternoon watching football. They toss a coin to see who makes the pizza/beer run. This simple act changes the lives of all three forever. The action kicks into high gear when all three pile into the car and head out for the pizza place. As so often happens in real life in the blink of an eye, there is a tragic accident, and one character awakes in the hospital. Thus begins his amazing journey that transforms his current views on the meaning of life, his morality, and religious beliefs in a very profound and personal way.The following passage found on page 419 gives an insight into the direction of this book: "Maybe the greatest danger isn't when the rules get broken, maybe it's when the rules get changed. Once they're changed you can follow the new rules and think you are doing the right thing, while all the time your new truth is just the old lies. You can tell yourself it's OK because the standards have changed, but if the standards mean anything at all they don't change. I want to follow the truth no matter where it leads me. The Truth will set you free."Randy Alcorn did an excellent job writing this book. It is full of twists and turns and will keep you turning the pages. He takes a firm stand on social agenda, special interest groups, and the way the news can be 'slanted' by their influence. It's interesting to note that this book was written in 1994 before the hot topic of 'spin' and bias on behalf of liberal minded networks and newsprint had been exposed in the last few years by conservative watch groups. The author is very clear to point out in his notes that this is a fictious work, and that it has been carefully researched.'Deadline' is interesting, and is well written with a strong and specific point of view. The characters are likable. Randy Alcorn packs this book full of powerful food for thought. Well done!

This is a great book for the basics. It tells you where to see birds with a brief list of possible sightings. Since it covers such a large area, it's just perfect for my needs. If I want to know more about a specific spot, I can research more online. I have already explored several hot spots and not been disappointed.

Bird-finding guides can really help point visitors to good places, but this one is a bit weak. Montana is a huge state, of course, so inevitably this book just selects a handful of spots, but even these aren't described in enough detail to have helped me find all the birds I wanted to see. It's 20 years old now, a revision is way overdue. Certainly better than nothing, but a visiting birder would find more birds and more top birding sites by digging through e-bird records.

Had to use this for a class, the content was generally pretty good. The authors cover the critical concepts generally well, but the verbose nature of the composition is unnecessary. I ended up buying "The Kimball Group Reader - Remastered Collection", which has a much better flow and an engaging read, plus it is much more economical. Unlike the price for MDBM edition 12 -- beyond reasonable! Even for the rental.Such is the racket that Pearson is known to have a near monopoly on the college and university market. FTC should investigate. Seriously, it is nothing short of racketeering.

This isn't one of those books you can quickly scan and understand. Rather, it's a text you find a quiet place and dedicate team to interpret and appreciate the foundation of E-R model. Once I realized the difference (by Chapter 3 I went back to chapter 1), and spent hours with each chapter, I could appreciate that everything was presented logically and of necessity. Excellent text - a keeper.

Content was mediocre, but the presentation in the kindle version was terrible. The table of contents had so many headings (often more than one per page of content) that trying to move to a location in the second half of the book required a ton of scrolling through the list.I also inadvertently tried to open the book on one too many devices. Typically, Kindle books can be read on up to 6 devices, but this one balked on device #4. I got a warning that I needed to deregister it from a device to download it again. I tried doing so on my home PC and phone, so I could access from the laptop I use for the class which assigned the book, and it still didn't work. I had to make sure that I had my iPad with me because that was the only device which could still access the content. Of course, I could have purchased it again. Given the price of this book, I assume that the publishers cracked down on usage on concurrent devices because they knew otherwise students would try to share it and they'd miss out on gouging as many students as they can.

Let's break down one of his sentences:"The explanation earlier in this chapter of the database development process referred to several different, but related, models of databases developed on a systems development project."Book is about 500+ pages, and probably could be reduced to 400 pages, if the author knew how to condense the english language, and use better words, around commas. I wouldn't even consider it verbose, it's almost like someone sleep talking.

Took longer than expected to receive the book, it was nicely shrink wrapped but I noticed corners were wrinkled (cant blame paper back) and a stain on the inside of back cover page (not sure how that happened). Contents are the same as the American version, but it was cheaper to buy than rent this semester.

I read this cover to cover as a casual database user. Never designed a database in my life or been responsible for database administration. This book provided some good high-level context to me about databases, and reinforced and added to my knowledge about querying databases. The text is a little disjointed (jumping from text to SQL to C to JavaScript just assuming the reader could comprehend the what and why of the code). It's all written for Oracle, so some of the functions simply are irrelevant if you don't use that expensive but powerful system. One last thought. The text is very verbose. Lots of sentences with highlighted keywords and no definitions. Don't try to define a word by using it in a sentence. Too much of the material made me say "huh?? what information was imparted here?" But there are good nuggets buried in the dross.

I'm a little irritated. When you try to download the Access version for the big Pine Valley Furniture Company it links to the ASCII version. If you replace the file name with BigPVFC11e.zip you will get the file. However the examples in chapter 2 don't actually match what you download. So the queries they show you as an example don't work. You can still play with the tables but for a $200 book you think they would make sure their website is accurate.The information in the book seems comprehensive.

Basically, the information this book contains is rendered inaccessible by the poor presentation.Remember writing that paper where you needed more length, so you went back and reworded everything to be expressed in a more complicated way? That's this textbook. Sentences are needlessly long, making content more difficult to absorb. Word choices are fluttery and fanciful when they need to be brick-solid. The prose squanders my time and my attention.Composition is bad. This book consistently names something I've never heard of, talks for a few paragraphs about it as though I know what it is, leads me to believe I've missed something and maybe I should go back and find it, and then finally defines the thing. Additionally, time after time something is brought up and then dismissed as being "beyond the scope of this text" or contained in proper detail in some other, future chapter (your princess is in another castle...).Images are never anywhere near the point in the text that references them! Reading about figure X-X? Well, figure X-Y is directly adjacent to what you're reading, and X-X is two pages back. For an e-book this is impossible to deal with, and even for a physical copy this would be ridiculous.And the jokes? Yes, it's got jokes. They aren't good. They aren't funny. They are meant to be a way of keeping the reader engaged, but they fall flat and they take up space I had hoped would contain useful information.This textbook is awful. It contains mountains of good information, but the writing is so bad as to render the content inaccessible.

I bought this book about 4 years ago, and finally picked it up and read it about 8 months ago. I will be forever grateful that I did.Frankly, the science portion of the book (maybe the first third) is great for what it is, but the real gold comes from the author's gentle, encouraging and empowering words on meditation. I found myself thoroughly persuaded by his argument that all of us have the choice to be happy in this world. Beyond just words, Mingyur Rinpoche provides the actual instructions for finding inner peace.After reading the book I was inspired to start a daily meditation practice, which has provided me with much greater perspective on my life, with less stress over the daily nonsense we are all consumed with 99% of the time. Reading this is a step in the right direction for anyone looking to get more enjoyment and meaning from their life.As others have maybe said, this book is geared mostly towards people without too much experience with meditation, although I believe it would be of benefit to practitioners of all levels.

This is the second time I've bought this book (after lending it to someone who decided they liked it too much to return it!). It's a wonderful guide for anyone interested in meditation, and provides lots of ideas and strategies for practice. Rinpoche also explains the science behind meditation, which I think gives this book added depth. I often pick it up and read a chapter whenever I'm feeling tense and need a reminder on how to be mindful to get through tough times.

Highly recommended to get on the fast track to understanding in a Western mindset what the practical benefits of insight meditation is and the much greater possibility of achieving great progress instead of dropping out as 95% do.Personal history: For 7 years I have been practicing meditation and studying Buddhist texts, and going to the occasional retreat.In my humble opinion, after reading upwards of 70 books on Buddhist meditation styles, and sitting in meditation for well over a thousand hours, this book is the best I have come across yet for me.The reason this is the case for me is that this author is a new type of Tibetan Buddhist, he is of the lineage of Tibetan Buddhism but he is involved closely with modern science' investigation into insight meditation and related subjects. This union of Tibetan meditation practices and Buddhist philosophy with Western science resources of investigation, along with the excellent writing ability of writer Eric Swanson, has produced a tome that "enlightened" me to the practical nature of and the outcome of insight meditation to produce wisdom and happiness.This one humbly feels he is "home" now. May all beings achieve happiness, peace and wisdom.

This book delivers what it promises: a practical guide to happiness, based on a unique fusion of Buddhist philosophy with modern psychology. It turns out that what we know about how the brain works has been practiced by Buddhists for years.I'm an atheist and I didn't find the religious aspects off-putting, because they were very downplayed. Instead, it reads more like a personal memoir and practical guide to meditation, with explanations of why meditation works (from both a scientific and Buddhist point of view).When it comes to some of the sketchier ideas like reincarnation, he addresses them in a practical way that explains why they are important to Buddhism and meditative practice, but doesn't try to convince you - he allows the reader to make her own choice of accepting these ideas or not, still making use of the rest of the book in either case.If you are unhappy in your life, want to try out meditation, want to learn more about Buddhist philosophy, or the science of happiness, have anxiety, depression, or too many racing thoughts, try this book.On a personal note, I have suffered from depression for many, many years, and this book helped me significantly. It didn't have an overnight effect, but it helped me frame my thoughts and troubles in a different way. The big challenge is making the concerted effort to put these concepts into practice on a daily basis, which is what is needed for real and dramatic change.

This is the most accessible and practical book I have read on mindfulness and how to start a meditation practice. It actually got me started in a meditation practice, which Wherever You Go, There You Are by Jon Kabbat-Zinn did not (even though I enjoyed that book, too). Highly recommend!It includes some basics of the neuroscience behind meditation, which I appreciated, being a scientist myself. I also liked that the author included his own life story and his problems with anxiety before he became a practiced meditator.

What a wonderful adventure! WELL written and stimulating. I love the interplay of the two main characters, one a curious skeptic on spiritual matters and the other a self-contained peace-radiating soul who teaches by example. A real page-turner. Great story line and totally believable, it reflects my own journey towards discovery. Loved the chapter on plunging into yoga. Good for a laugh and for enlightenment. Highly recommended.

Campbell tells a largely unknown WWII tale of the 32nd Red Arrow division of the U.S Army and its trek through the rugged terrain of New Guinea to battle the Japanese. Stephen Hoye presents the remarkable account in a matter-of-fact manner, somewhat detached from the story while attempting to relay the information in a journalistic manner. As interesting as the story of this unprepared and ill-fated band is, Hoye fails to capture the adventurous aspect of this tale in his reading, which seems far removed from the story itself. Stylistically the reading is superb, offering a clear and professional narration. However, Hoye simply fails to keep the listener's interest throughout, presenting the story as a news documentary rather than a captivating account of these courageous individuals. The material itself is strong enough to warrant repeated listens, but Hoye offers little in the way of originality or spontaneity. There is a roadside monument in my area dedicated to the 32nd US Infantry Division. The monument lists all the campaigns the 32nd fought in WW1 and WW2. The Battle for New Guinea (Buna) is among the honors.The 32nd ID was a National Guard outfit recruited in Wisconsin and Michigan. Along with 17 other National Guard Divisions the 32nd was activated for federal service in the summer of 1940 as the war in Europe raged on.Once the US entered the war after Pearl Harbor in December, 1941 it was decided that the US and Great Britain would pursue a "Hitler first" policy which meant the majority of US assets would be routed to Britain for an early cross channel invasion of France.Japanese ambitions in the South Pacific interfered with the policy and the US had to divert Marine and Army units to the Pacific.Since two excellent Australian Divisions were fighting in North Africa in 1942 it became necessary for the US to send an army division to help protect Australia from a possible Japanese invasion. The 32nd was selected for the mission and it fell under General Douglas MacArthur's command who had set up his HQ in Australia after the fall of the Philippines to the Japanese early in 1942.The Island of New Guinea was under Australian jurisdiction and had a small Australian garrison drawn from militia units. The Japanese eyed New Guinea as a place to invade in order to try and cut off Australia from outside help. Some in the IJA thought it might be possible to actually invade Australia once New Guinea was captured.Once the Japanese invaded New Guinea it started one of the most brutal campaigns of World War Two. The 32nd ID was sent to New Guinea with the objective of retaking the island along with the Australians who were already engaged with the Japanese.Here is an entry from the Ghost Mountain Boys by James Campbell that describes what the Americans and Australians were up against:In 1942, when the 32nd Division arrived in New Guinea, the island was still terra incognito. It's interior was largely unmapped, its coastline a puzzle of coral reefs, its swamps and grasslands a breeding ground for disease, its climate as pernicious as any ever encountered by an army. In New Guinea, MacArthur neglected warfare's most important lesson: The island was his enemy, yet he remained only vaguely aware of the hardships his troops would confront there. (page 73, The Ghost Mountain Boys)The terms Ghost Mountain Boys refers to an infantry battalion of the 32nd ID. Their initial mission would be to hike over the 10,000 foot Owen Stanley Mountains to protect the Australian right flank in the battle for New Guinea.The first part of the book documents through letters, diaries and the official records just how difficult that hike was. As the above quote states the island itself was more the enemy than the Japanese.The 32nd was ill prepared to fight the kind of jungle warfare that would be common in the Pacific in the years to come. More men died or were disabled from a myriad of jungle swamp diseases than would die or be wounded from the Japanese Army.MacArthur, safely from his HQ in Australia was oblivious to the facts and essentially ordered the 32nd to do the impossible without giving them the necessary support. MacArthur relieved officers who he didn't think were aggressive enough totally disregarding the obstacles they had to face fighting both nature and the tenacious Japanese who suffered just as much as the allies did from the unforgiving island. It was the men in the ranks who suffered the most from MacArthur's lack of concern.Campbell includes excerpts from Japanese letters and diaries that give insight to the fact the Japanese suffered as much as anyone else if not more since their supply situation was even worse than ours!The book draws much needed attention to the little known campaign for New Guinea since it began at roughly the same time as the US Marines fought their epic on Guadalcanal. While the American pubic were keenly aware of the Marines plight on Guadalcanal they were largely ignorant of the 32nd's sacrifice on New Guinea.My wife's father was a medic in 1943-44 and served at a rear area hospital in the Australian controlled part of New Guinea. He contracted dengue fever that turned his hair white and affected his nerves. He received a disability from the Army but the effects of New Guinea plagued him until his death in 2000. New Guinea was a help hole even for medics who served in rear area hospitals. Campbell's book helps us remember the sacrifice of the men who served there.

Despite comparisons to World War II first-hand accounts on the front lines such as Band of Brothers and Hampton Sides critically acclaimed Ghost Soldiers or to other similar experiences thereafter in Vietnam, Ghost Mountain Boys: Their Epic March and the Terrifying Battle for New Guinea – the Forgotten War of the South Pacific is a story that stands on its own. The men of 32nd Division endured the war experience unlike any other that had already been fought within or outside of American shores, and their story, man against nature and defeat the enemy came second in the months from July 1942 to January 1943.Ghost Mountain Boys revisits that Eastern front of the war within the South Pacific and the road towards liberating the Philippine islands and General Douglas MacArthur’s call to return to the islands that originally was planned to end within two years but dragged on to four. While the Northern most and Northwest islands of the South Pacific were commanded by the fleets of the United States Navy led by Admirals Nimitz and Halsey, and early advancements in the Southwest quadrants in Guadalcanal by the US Marines, at the helm of the strategy in order to deter Imperial Japanese armies and navies in the southern most islands and coastlines of New Guinea, Port Moresby, Buna-Gona-Sanananda campaigns, the Southwest Pacific Area (SWPA) was commanded by General Douglas MacArthur and allied forces from Australia. MacArthur would command the air and army, Halsey would command the sea. However, further assistance would not be by Australian Army General Sir Thomas Blaney but by the “Bataan Gang,” members of his senior staff; this would lead throughout the New Guinea campaigns as an underbelly of bitterness between American and Australian upper echelons. Aside from General MacArthur’s role in the campaign, Generals George Kenney and Robert L. Eichelberger also had their contentions about the war. In spite of the rivalry that generated, the generals had much more to deal with regard to the climate, geography, natural terrain, and most importantly unfamiliar diseases and illnesses that soldiers were not accustomed to being exposed to in a tropical region; the major enemy would be dysentery and malaria and the undaunted muddy and wet forests and swamps that soldiers treaded through and became casualties to rather than the Japanese forces that fought back. Eichelberger near end of the Gona campaign, described the experience within his historical memory a scene out of the US Civil War as a result of the losses that occurred in one day of fighting as well as his view of the battle as a “poor man’s war” due to the lack of the Marines’ presence in New Guinea and tanks and artillery (289).Campbell does an exceptional job to depict the landscape and the conditions that thousands of American, Australian, and Buna and Papua inhabitants that helped to assist in the campaigns endured. Through their words written in diaries, journals, and letters back home, readers will understand why the war in New Guinea became a forgotten war. Not in the sense that it was not remembered but rather one that those that survived or their families during the time believed may have been best forgotten. One may imagine 25 years later, parallels to the war in the Pacific to Vietnam.

Australian find it hard to accept that they were not the only force to defeat the Japanese in the New Guinea Campaigns. The casualties suffered by the US forces were close to 10 times that suffered by the Australians as attested to in this excellent book. We have to ask ourselves as Australians why is it that the US efforts are today virtually unknown by the Australian public. Today the Kokoda Trails battles are starting to rival the Gallipoli legend in the public mind, so if this trend is to continue the full story needs to be told. The place names like Suwari, Jaure and Natunga should rank with Ioribaiwa, Menari Myola and Kokoda.In the 1960s the Kokoda Trail was used for training, and I well remember a very damp night on Ioribaiwa ridge followed by a very spirit filled stand-to just before dawn. At that time some of the trees had deadly fruit, rusted grenades that were originally on the ground connected to trip wires. If you believe in ghosts this was the place to be. I was profoundly effected by that experience.For anyone who had to face that jungle, Australian, American and Japanese we must have respect. People today walk the Kokoda trail as a "must do", an almost rite of passage. I challenge them to then do the Ghost Mountain walk - it is much harder. Perhaps if young Australian people do the Ghost Mountain walk then they will have the full story and see the price the American youth of that time paid for their countries alliance to Australia.
