“Anyone who’s looking for a way to live both simply and beautifully will love Ross Chapin’s notions about creating community. If you’ve enjoyed the “Not So Big House” series, you’ll also love this book.” – SARAH SUSANKA, author of "The Not So Big House"Anyone who's looking for a way to live both simply and beautifully will love Ross Chapin's notions about creating community. If you've enjoyed the "Not So Big House" series, you'll also love this book.--SARAH SUSANKA, author of "The Not So Big House"Ross Chapin possesses a Christopher Alexander-like ability to show how all the pieces of a house and a neighborhood can fit together, composing a profoundly satisfying environment. --PHILIP LANGDON, author, "A Better Place to Live: Reshaping the American Suburb," and editor of New Urban NewsThe phrase "think globally, act locally" takes on new meaning in this book, which shows what is possible when residents in close proximity share a commitment to community. "Pocket Neighborhoods" includes an extensive list of resources and organizations related to urban design and eco-friendly neighborhoods, but this is not a how-to book. It is information and inspiration, a timely discussion as regions grapple with housing density and look for ways to build a sense of community along with every new house, apartment and condo. --Jeffrey Head, LOS ANGELES TIMESThis revolutionary book will change the way North Americans view new home developments and will help home buyers realize that community is often as important as the house.--TORONTO STARAfter decades of living large -- mini-mansions in sprawling subdivisions the size of cities -- some Americans are retrenching and showing a new appreciation for small, cozy and neighborly. Okay, first off, the disclaimer. I live in a Ross Chapin home in a neighborhood of Ross Chapin homes. My wife and I both had extensive conversations with Chapin during the design process. Does that make me biased? Or does it show that I appreciated the concepts that Chapin details in his terrific book before he fully articulated them in print? Probably both.Ross Chapin is a thoughtful person who has spent decades considering how our homes, both individually and in aggregate, shape our interactions with our neighbors, with our stuff and with how we go about daily tasks. That's a long- winded way of saying that this book is about community. How does having an inviting front porch affect your willingness and ability to interact with neighbors? We sat on our front porch this afternoon and had coffee. In 15 minutes we had three conversations with passers by. It's not just the fact that Chapin's houses all have front porches that makes this possible. He has considered the door placement in relation to the porch width. He has considered the construction and optimal height for the porch railings, so we can see out to the sidewalk. And so on and so on.Each room in the house has been considered, it's relation to the other rooms, to the light from windows, to the flow of traffic, to the size and shape. But in this book, he's gone beyond the single dwelling to consider how homes work in relationship to each other to facilitate the creation of true neighborhoods, not just adjacent buildings inhabited by near strangers. And we don't get only Chapin's ideas in the book. He has done a lot of research about neighborhoods, examining what has worked in the past and why, as well as what hasn't worked and why not. The result is a thoughtful and well considered exploration of pocket neighborhoods.BTW, a pocket neighborhood has a common green space shared by the community, a common building for connecting in, modestly sized homes that don't give garages pride of placement. As I've mentioned, the homes have front porches that face the community, not just weather coverings for the front door but real porches that encourage sitting down and sharing a word or a drink with neighbors. I can't say whether all of Chapin's neighborhoods work as well as ours does, but I feel more sense of community now than I ever have in a city.

Beware. Don't waste your money on the kindle version of this book. The images, which are critical to understanding the content, are totally useless if you are using KindlePC as there is no way to enlarge them. They are completely illegible and at $20, the ebook cost almost as much as the hard copy. I bought the ebook thinking it would be easier to carry around than a hard copy. Amazon should not sell an ebook version that has images that aren't usable in all formats. For $20 I fully expect the ebook to be just as good as the hard copy. Really disappointed.

Ross Chapin has found a perfect niche in the housing supply world. His design for smaller than normal cottages is perfect for this age... actually, Ross was ahead of his time in designing small (not tiny) cottages for people who want smaller homes. Small homes, not tiny homes, will become more accepted in the market once builders realize there is a strong market for them. It's a great idea to create small high-quality neighborhoods that use less natural resources as well as creating small personal comfortable neighborhoods.

I am a practicing architect and live and work in Seattle. I've had the opportunity to see several of Ross Chapin's projects illustrated in this fine guide to pocket neighborhoods and small scale communities. Mr. Chapin has been well in front of the planning curve for decades here in the NW, spearheading a movement for smaller scale, lower impact, green communities. I admire his work greatly. With this book, I have been able to dig a bit deeper into what was behind the planning, design, construction and eventual tenant use of his and similar projects, via informative narrative, well done illustrations and beautiful photography. We live in a time of excess. The automobile has dominated the planning strategies in most city and suburban planning offices and neighbor to neighbor contact has often become fleeting or non-existent. Our streets are vacant as we head to the backyard for our privacy. The fences become taller. There are many however, who long for a sense of community they experienced growing up in small towns or vibrant urban neighborhoods. As the book's forward notes, "Ross Chapin marries the key elements from the Not so Big House ((Susanka), New Urbanist, and Co-Housing movements to shed light on how to foster a strong sense of place through small, close-knit communities."There's much to digest in the books 200 odd pages. I find myself re-reading much of the content both for practical planning inspiration and simple reading pleasure. It works on both the technical and non-technical level.

This beautifully written and photographed book is blueprint to bring an awesome paradigm shift to what and how we construct new, livable communities. Be an agent of transformation where you live by sharing this with your city planners, builders, neighbors and policy makers. We are all missing out when something this good is available...but relatively rare and undiscovered. Spread the word!

Here Pema Chodron gives us the steps to break our habits and from the beginning I was able to use the steps. Right now I’m working on getting rid of old habits and thinking as they no longer serve me. I’m tired of living the stories and not living life. As I’ve been breaking these stories for the last year people thought something was wrong, but there isn’t I’m waking up. Now I see the gaps in this stories and with this book I was able to take it to a new level and break some habits I hadn’t been able to break before. I highly recommend this book to people.

Everything this lady writes is a classic learning aid, mainly about ones self!!! Awesome writer, and Teacher!!

This is so helpful I have purchased it on Kindle and in paperback. If we practice compassion to ourselves and sit with the energies and emotions of shenpa, we can learn to feel our oneness with all the world. By not getting hooked by whatever small event that slights or angers us, we increase our spiritual courage to stay open and connect with others through our awareness that we all struggle with the same feelings. Our practice with the small painful events helps prepare us for times when major life changes, such as betrayal or death of a loved one occur.I have started to say to myself when difficulties happen, "Don't let the shenpa get you down! As one grows in loving kindness and stays more open to the challenges of life, Chodron teaches about tonglen, a spiritual practice that helps us to be part of the solution to our world's problems. I have read the book twice so far and read parts of it daily. It is an inspiration to me for handling life's difficulties in a way that brings compassion for myself and others.

This book was the strongest help I could have had to help me out of a short-lived, but poisonous depression. This is the first book of hers I've read, and it certainly will not be the last. She is a Buddhist nun and I had never tried any of her many books. I had some idea they were kind of pop psychology, self-help books, and so I avoided them....She writes straight from the shoulder and helped me to look at myself realistically. It was "tough love" in spades......I will make a list of her many titles and refer to it when I am in need of, making sense of my world....Sincerely, Pat Young

We can improve our suffering and therefore the suffering of others. It is like the stock market and all of life. There are ups and downs, highs and lows. Just when you think you fixed everything, crashes and burns. The lesson may be resilience and getting back on track easier and easier with each upheaval.

Excellent Buddhist book applying the principles to everyday problems related to not being awake or present to life. Many habits are fueled by desires and fears which are a result of the story we tell ourselves which at closer incEdition is only a fantasy. Chord on does an excellent job of illuminating the basic Buddhist practice in a non sectarian manner that can be digested by even the non religious. I have read other books by Chodron and admire her ability to write about everyday challenges and apply Buddhist practice in a non threatening and simple way.

I have enjoyed reading several of Pema Chodron's books. They have all been helpful. I also recommend her Udemy courses, particularly "The Freedom to Choose Something Different".

I’m a huge Pema fan and this book is more of her deep wisdom, wit and inspiration. Her take on Buddhism is easily digestible for the western mind especially someone like myself who grew up Catholic then rejected religion or spirituality in all forms and now has embraced Buddhist thought, teachings and meditation as a beautiful way of living. When Things Fall Apart was the first of her books I read. It really helped through difficult times and I’ve been a fan ever since.

Gaiman knocks it out of the park again with this imaginative story. (School Library Journal)This would also make a wonderful readaloud, but don’t be surprised if the kids insist that it be read in one sitting--and maybe with a side of cookies and milk. (Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books)“[A] delightful tale.” (Wall Street Journal)“If your kids still allow you to read aloud to them, this book is for you.” (Newsday)“[A]n astounding tale…an absolute delight to read out loud….one part Douglas Adams, one part Doctor Who, and one part The Usual Suspects.” (boingboing.com)“It’s hard not to love a novel that borrows equally from Calvin and Hobbes and The Usual Suspects. If you read only one book this year, a story with dancing dwarfs is always a wise choice.” (Kirkus Reviews)

Another fabulous Neil Gaiman story! We're huge fans of Gaiman's, and this one book I'm thrilled to have one my shelves. Normally I post all of my children & middle grade reviews on my Mundie Kids book review site, but sometimes I read a book that I have to share on both sites. This is one of those books. An outrageously hilarious epic adventure from master story teller Neil Gaiman. Fortunately, The Milk is an action packed, humor filled story that readers of all ages will enjoy. It's the kind of story I can see Dr. Who telling his children.....The tables have turned! Normally as parents we enjoy the outrageous stories are children creatively craft, or maybe we still remember the stories we told our parents. This time, Gaiman has crafted a laugh out loud, imaginative story a father tells his children about his epic adventure he went on to get his children milk for their morning cereal. From space ships, to aliens, pirates, intergalactic dinosaurs, a volcano and more, this is one story I'd recommend adding to your book collections. This is a story that readers have all ages will love. This is an easy to read, laugh out book that even the most reluctant reader will find themselves enjoying. This is a story that's great for reading out loud, and one even young children can enjoy. Skottie Young's illustrations are the perfect addition to this fantastic read.

This was an awesome read. We took it on vacation and were finished it far too soon. The lack of chapters means it flows just as it should, in one long, crazy, imaginative wild ride. My kids, husband and I all absolutely LOVED it and I recommend it to anyone looking for a fun adventure story that will engage their kids and not overwhelm them with long wordy chapters and deep concepts. Brilliant writing and fantastic illustrations! I would give 10 stars if I could! Hoping Neil Gaiman writes more like this.

Love this story. Love the illustrations. Love this edition. If you want something quirky to read either out loud or to yourself, this is a great choice for any age. I read it aloud at least once a month to my kids, and my 3 yo asks for it even more frequently than that. My parents were present for a recitation and thought it was hilarious, too. The read takes a little over an hour, even with all the diffferent charcter voices and illustration examinations, and is definitely worth the time. Pirates, vampires, dinosaurs, volcanoes, unicorns, cannibals, hot air balloons... this book has it all! Highly recommnend!

Fortunately the Milk is one of two Neil Gaiman books coming out this year. This book is not only a children's book written about a grown-up, but also an apology to father's everywhere. Having once written about a child swapping his dad for two goldfish, Neil Gaiman had shared that he felt like he put father's in a very bad light and the fact that the book has been given as a Father's Day gift over the years has made it worse. So he decided to make amends. Fortunately the Milk is about what happens when a dad is allowed to go fetch the milk for the morning cereal and, if left unattended, all the wonderful mischief he can get into. This book has everything from pirates to hot air balloon (sorry, Floaty-Ball-Person-Carrier) manned by a Stegosaurus to green mucus aliens to volcano gods and even to piranhas. Through it all, our brave parental unit keeps tight hold of the milk, but is it possible to keep the milk safe when it might just be the only thing between life and the complete destruction of the universe? I found Fortunately the Milk to be witty, fantastical and just a little bit mad, in the best sense of the word. The illustrations are the perfect accompaniment to such a madcap adventure. This is a story that will appeal to both the young and the young at heart.

I love Neil Gaimans work. Anansi Boys, American Gods, etc. So, I thought this book would be a great introduction for my 7yr old. I detest reading all the heavily commercialized books, so I try and find good writing for my child to enjoy. I liked this book, and I was a little disappointed that my child just doesn't. The book is oddball and crazy, just what I thought a kid would enjoy, but she groans whenever I pull this book out. That said, once I start reading, she's rolling and squiggling with laughter. I just don't know. Maybe I should have waited a couple of years, but it's a good book and I'm not giving up the fight.

As a fifty-something adult, I should be embarrassed by the fact that I list a children's book as a recent read. But how can there be anything like embarrassment for something as darling as this silly, clever tale. I need to start volunteering to read to children at the local library for the sheer joy of reading this out loud some happy afternoon to little ones I can only hope will share my delight.

The first time I read FORTUNATELY, THE MILK, I was on a road trip with my sister's family. Her kids (9-year-old twin girls, 5-year-old boy) were antsy and bored, and begged to be read to. I had a new book that I thought they might enjoy, though I myself had not read it yet.I read this book aloud to a carful of people who all ended up listening, whether or not they'd intended to. By the end, everyone was laughing--me, the kids, the kids' parents, and our cousin who had come along for the trip.As soon as I finished the final words, the kids begged for it to be read again. That's how I ended up reading a book aloud, twice in a row, on a car trip, and having more fun than should probably be allowed.FORTUNATELY, THE MILK is fun, light-hearted, full of absurd British humor, and deeply sweet -- all about a father's love for his children (and his flair for creative storytelling). Read it. I don't care if you're grown. Read it anyway.
