Amazon.com Review

Oprah Book Club® Selection, March 1998: Here on Earth is set in motion when March Murray and her teenage daughter travel from their California home to New England. Their stay is to be brief. Judith Dale, her childhood housekeeper-cum-foster mother, has died, and March must set things to right and get out of gloomy Jenkintown as quickly as possible. "Five days tops," she reassures her scientist husband. Instead, she is pulled back into the arms of Hollis, her first love--an avaricious, Heathcliff-like individual who radiates sulfur and cruelty. "She left and didn't come back, not even when he called her, and yet here she is, on this dark night; here and no place else." In this deep fable of loss and control, love and fear, Alice Hoffman allows us into her characters' cores and makes us wish their fortunes were happier. Here on Earth is filled with wisdom, what-ifs, and animals who seem, if not to know more than human beings, at least to know how to shy from danger.

I was prepared to love this novel as much as I have most of Hoffman's work. The imagery and sensory experience of the setting did not disappoint, however, I did find the antagonist to be lacking in the sympathetic qualities that would have made him so attractive to the protagonist. In addition, the ending kind of came out of nowhere as though the author was tired of writing and just wanted to wrap it up which I found disappointing. I realize this is a highly acclaimed piece of work and one could certainly do much worse, but as an avid Alice Hoffman fan, I didn't find it to be her best.

Alice Hoffman called this novel her homage to Bronte. I think it did a great job of bringing the character of Heathcliffe and putting his abusive and obsessive behavior into a modern setting. It's a very unpleasant story but it also did a lot to show how domestic violence can creep into someone's life. The character of Gwen was my favorite. At first she seemed like a moody annoying teen but quickly became the most fully formed and clever of the characters. She was inspirational in her humanity. There were magical elements to the novel like the racehorse Tarot and the legend of the foxes and the ever oppressive plague of rabbits. The many ways love can be toxic and destructive is explored.I really enjoyed this novel and found it very readable but sadly it didn't grip me enough to think about reading it multiple times like I have with Wuthering Heights. Still I highly recommend it.

Even though I found the book hard to put down, I had a number of problems with it. I picked up on the similarities to Wuthering Heights quite soon, and then read that it was the author's homage to Bronte. That was great, as I love that book. But Hollis was only a sympathetic character when he was very young, and March, who seemed at first to be a sensible woman, did things I couldn't believe she would do--especially with her daughter there. I became disgusted with both of them. But I have loved many of Alice Hoffman's books, and this won't keep me from reading more of them, as I love her writing.

Here on Earth was a beautifully crafted novel of real life, tragic stories, intricate characters and a peek into the life of a woman who visits her past and then can't break free.I LOVED this novel for so many reasons. Firstly, I didn't measure it against any other novel, written by Hoffman or anyone else. As a stand alone story, it was absolutely stunning. March, the mother, Gwen, the daughter and the whole cast of tragic characters in this small town were fleshed out brilliantly. The story of Gwen falling back into her past relationship with a person she'd pledged her love to as a teenager, the slippery slope downward and the daughter's voice of reason was so compelling, I was turning Kindle pages long into the night.Don't be deterred by the low star reviews here. If you don't go into this novel expecting it to be a repeat of your favorite Hoffman novel, you will love how the book keeps you racing to the ending.

Wow. Just wow. I ran across a quote from the book "Here on Earth" by Alice Hoffman on one of my favorite blogs, Everyday Strange, and it piqued my curiosity enough to fork over some dough for a read slightly different than my go-to. It was so worth every penny."Here on Earth" by Alice Hoffman is a love story unlike any others I've ever read.  It's like six love stories crafted together into one beautifully written novel that highlights both the beauty and the pain that we are willing to endure to follow our hearts to the end of Earth and beyond. And of course the last few paragraphs gutted me to the point I couldn't sleep for a good hour despite the late hour I sacrificed finishing it cover to cover yesterday, though you'd have to read the entire book for it to enrapture you the same way. What I disliked: It switched perspectives a lot. One paragraph would be from the teenagers mind. Two paragraphs later it would be from the moms perspective. It was hard to get used to, but once I did it was lovely. I also disliked the amount of extramarital affairs; however the reviews did indicate it would be secretively dark so I should have guessed. What I liked: It was beautifully written, thought provoking and in a tone I haven't felt in a while. It really spoke volumes about the power of love and how it compels us to be something else - something more - something new. It also described a season, (in life as well as the weather) so astonishingly well that I'm not going to even try to give it words. Alice Hoffman captured a feeling, something unrepeatable.  I find myself thinking about certain aspects of the book during random times of the day - in the car driving, talking with a stranger, or just trying to understand my own world. Shockingly I would relive the pain that book sends you through a hundred times more just to be blessed enough to read it again.

I read this because I am a fan of Hoffman. Her poetic descriptions begin Here on Earth, causing me to slow down and feel the words. Her writing is always good, but this book made me feel like I was in two stories. One included the characters, which are richly developed. The second story I felt as if some interference came in and hi-jacked the reason for the story. The ending was rushed, for me. I am not a fan of dropping off characters, which I feel happened with (SPOILER ALERT) Gwen. The main character, March Murray, becomes secluded into a psychosis of love until she disappears. After such strong development, I would like the know something about the conclusion of March. Instead it ended with a sub-characters moment. Four stars for effort, great writing and gripping story of love-confusion.

I don't have a green thumb. At all. I need all the help I can get to grow stuff. This book is somewhat helpful in letting me grow food-bearing tropical plants. At this point I have a roughly 50% survival rate- which for me is pretty good. *shame*The book has helped some, but not as much as I'd hoped it would; still, it's raised my survival rate to 50% from maybe 25%, so that's a huge improvement. It's definitely inspirational- I want to get more tropical plants-= and try to help them survive!

I was really looking forward to this book as I love growing lemons and other tropical plants but sadly this book contained no more information than typically seen on the tag or in a catalogue.I have seen more complete information online for free. Example: likes full sun or protect roots from getting waterlogged. Very vague and basic. No specific fertilizer recommendations either. I would not rebuy and feel the book is highly overpriced for something easily read in less than an hour with no true information. Nice photos but I wasn't interested in photos. I wanted growing information. Surprised by the high reviews as they are seeing something I didn't.

I bought this book hoping to learn a few tricks to make my dwarf citrus thrive. The book's writers claim that the book is user friendly and easy to understand but I think that they should find an editor who doesn't know very much about the subject matter to point out exactly where they are not giving enough info to make it understandable. (I taught English, Science, and Music for 25 years so I think I am capable of figuring out an instructional book. It appears that they know their subject so well that they don't realize how much they are leaving out for a novice to understand.) It was a fun read, though, and it was interesting to see just how many varieties of dwarf fruit trees there are to grow indoors. Unfortunately, my lime tree is dead and my Meyer Lemon is dying. :(

I agree with many of the other reviewers for this book. The reviewer who listed all the sections of the book has it spot on. This is very nice for inspiration and helping you decide what types of plants you would like the grow - so basically it's great for kick-starting your interest. Application, however, will definitely take supplemental knowledge from other sources. If I were to decide to grow coffee in my house, for instance, I would say this book piqued my interest in growing it and gave a nice summary of how it could be done. But I would definitely need to do specific research on growing coffee, preferably indoors, which I can imagine could be hard to find. How do I help maintain a warm, humid climate for instance. More detail per plant would have brought this book up from four stars to five, in my opinion. All in all, I am glad I bought this book. It is very enjoyable and interesting to read and the pictures are nice. There is definitely some very useful information - I especially like some of the little additions like how to process what you grow to have a recognizable end product (i.e. cinnamon and coffee). If you hope to use this as your one and only source, though, you will be disappointed.

Great detail on how to care for, and use plants that produce many of the things in our fridge. Very little information on how to actually grow them from garbage scraps. You'll have to get another book for that. The authors work at Logees, a commercial greenhouse, so I assume they want you to buy from them. The book would have been five plus stars if there was detailed info about growing these items from things purchased at the grocery store.Nicely laid out, and decent graphics.

I expected to get a book full of great tips to help you grow tasty tropical plants in any home any where. Instead I got a book that is more of a history lesson than a practical guide to... well anything.I am disappointed with this book. There is little valuable information for the person who actually wants to grow tasty and tropical plants.Spend your money on seeds.***If you have a first generation Kindle then skip this book completely(do that anyway) the pages are chock full of pictures(with color?) and the formatting is deplorable.***

Very helpful book written by the folks at Logee's Gardens, so it covers their tropical plants for sale as well as any other tropicals you find. Good illustrations and explanations, but could be even more descriptive of requirements. I'm growing lemongrass, papaya, coffee, kefir lime, decorative orange, and hardy kiwis. Helped me select proper pots - clay - and learn soil requirements, watering, temperature needs, soil requirements.

As a mom of three active, nature-oriented young boys, I can definitely recommend this book. I had checked it out from the library but found it so useful I decided to buy it. This is a great book on growing fruit indoors. As others have noted, it may not be exhaustive information on each plant. But, if you're looking for a review of the edible plants that you could grow indoors, this is a nice place to start. You definitely get enough information to asses the pros and cons of each plant and to know if the plant is a good fit for your indoor environment. From there, you can choose your plants and do online searches to get more detailed plant care information.

I really enjoyed reading about several new (to me) tropical fruiting plants that can be grown in the home. I was afraid that many of these unusual plants would only available from Logees, (the author is affiliated with Logees Greenhouse) - but after reading it, I just had to go online and look for some of them. Sure enough, the most frequent resource that searches located was Logees. The great news is that I ordered a couple of plants from Logees and they were excellent, good-sized and well-grown plants.I was particularly interested in the Miracle Berry - a small fruit that changes the mouth chemistry for a few hours so that even a lemon tastes sweet. I found the plant at several places, but NONE of the others offered the large size that I found here. After a couple of months my plant still looks big and healthy, so hopefully it'll make it to the fruiting stage!
