From the Publisher

This is the Second Edition of Vol. III BSD Socket Version from one of the most popular TCP/IP Internetworking series ever published. This new edition includes code in ANSI C throughout. This is the only book available who's central theme is software design that teaches designers how to structure clients and servers. The server designs are directly applicable to WWW and other applications. The authors present the most complete coverage of server technology that allows designers to understand the costs and benefits of advanced server technologies. In addition, the Second Edition discusses the use of application gateways to allow client-server communication across heterogeneous protocols.

From the Back Cover

This is a revised version of this volume. Changes in this edition include: Code has been updated to use ANSI C and the UNIX operating systems (POSIX). Covers SLIP connections (a popular program that allows TCP/IP access to the Internet over dial-up phone systems. Latest changes in Network File System protocol (NFS3). This edition focuses on the BSD version of UNIX. This volume answers the question “How does one use TCP/IP?” — focusing on the client-server paradigm, and examining algorithms for both the client and server components of a distributed program.Describes the AT&T TLI interface and uses it in all examples. The principles underlying distributed programs and all server designs are emphasized. Thoroughly covers the many ways to design interactive and concurrent client and server software, as well as their proper use and application. Concepts apply to Client-Server programs in general; not just TCP/IP. Any communications professional who wants to put TCP/IP to use. This is everyone working on Internet communications.

This is a great book and I see why some teachers chose it for grad students. I didn't do well in networks last semester because I had to learn BSD TCP/IP sockets from sources like book snippets my teacher gave me, man pages, and various Internet sources. The textbook I had to buy for class has almost no C code or any explanations about BSD sockets. So, I invested into this and the Richard Stevens (UNIX Network Programming) book. Both are excellent assests.Pro (This book): I like how it explained what each important function did (like read/write)Con: The example code could be a little better. This book is well-written and will be a good reference once I'm through with my class. I bought all 3 volumes since I could get them at a great price. What especially helped: sometimes books would take up to 50 pages explaining a topic. The "Internetworking with TCP/IP" series are excellent at giving the bottom line and at times makes it easier to understand the details within the longer-winded pages of other books. In a way, to me, it's like a set of cliff notes to my textbook. If you're baffled about network programming, these books might be worth a try.

I'm a computer science student and we used this book for our class. It does a very good job of explaning what you need to know, and provided examples that actually work. If there was one thing I didn't like about the book is that they use their own header files, so you have to include them in with your projects, but a few of us, just took their all their C files and compiled them into one big header file, and it works great. Most book do this kind of thing so it wasn't any shock. I would recommend this book to anyone with a good C background, obviously you need to know C before trying to write the code, but you don't need to be advanced by any means.

THEY ARE USING THE WRONG BOOK COVER FOR IMAGE. They will ship you the second image, the white cover. This is very important as the white version is volume 2 version 2, the blue cover is volume 2 version 3 and THEY ARE DIFFERENT. this screwed over at least 4 people in my class. The book itself is good and detailed.

Still relevant today....the basics of TCP/IP and Sockets have not changed! Also, an excellent explanation!

It was a very good buy, good quality and best price. Delivery was on time.

It uses Basic language which is very old and make the job very complected

I want to set the expectations straight. This is not the best Winsock programming book. This book address higher level issues with network programming and it does a very good job at it. It is going to presents the different options for writing a server such as concurrent vs iterative or single thread vs multithread and explains carefully the tradeoff of each option. In my opinion that is the strength and the originality of the book. Another favorite part of the book is the presentation of the complete implementation of a telnet client where the author leads you through all the design and implementation process by explaining you the reasoning behind each decision. What I did not like about the book is that like the volume 1, too many topics are covered so in many chapters the author barely touch the topic without going in depth into it and I am questioning the value of these chapters as reference.

I decided to write this note after a fourth person asked me about my favorite book for winsock programming. The answer is, since winsock is built on BSD sockets, and what isn't in BSD sockets but is in winsock is mostly Windows operating system related, your best bet is still the MSDN reference material. That is, if you already have some background in TCP/IP from Unix platform. If not, and you insist on a winsock specific book, there are not that many choices I know of. So this is probably your best bet.If you are a beginning TCP/IP programmer, this will help. Pretty readable and well organized. But most of the examples in the book are for the type of applications which have already been written and rewritten several times over in the world and you can always find those someplace on the web. I find myself going to back to Richard Stevens volumes and to the RFCs, online documentations at Microsoft and elsewhere. But then, that might be because I started my TCP/IP days from UNIX/SunOS/IRIX.For beginning TCP/IP programming this can be a good book. There are some paragraphs here and there with sloppy editing - technical and otherwise - but within tolerable limits. And, that is why I did not give it five stars.
