Our 7 year old son LOVES minecraft and loves this book. It has been so fun to read it together (as a parent I've learned a lot about minecraft from it)! It fuels his imagination and its so fun to read something and the next day he is putting it into practice but then anxious to go back to the book and learn some more. My husband and I love that it encourages his imagination but also propels him to want to read and learn from books rather than just watching YouTube. I highly recommend this book as a way for parents to engage in an activitiy with their kiddos if they enjoy minecraft. I was oblivious (I'm embarrassed to admit that) as to the intricacies of minecraft and what the imagination of a little boy is capable of. Pretty amazing!

This is a good, though incomplete, encyclopedia to the Minecraft universe. The writing is solid and gives you a good understanding of each topic, and the illustrations appear to be taken from the game directly and accurately show what each topic looks like, however, the low gloss pages mute the color and contrast, compared to how things appear in the actual game.The missing items are mostly the things you collect, which are pretty important. If you read the entire encyclopedia you *will* find references to some of the items here and there. But for a book that touts itself as ultimate it is anything but, and I was a little disappointed that I could not find topics for many things my son was interested in learning more about. But I guess there's always the Internet.

Great book!! Focusing around Europeans moving into the United States adjusting to a new pseudonym term called “white”. Which after reading this book will solidify it’s a term that loosely meant a class system. As Europeans mainly from southern and Eastern Europe were not classified as white and were taunted. Italians were hung. Greeks were discriminated against and called non white. The main reason for all Europeans being called white has more to do with economic movements. African and Asians Americans stared encroaching economically into the European Americans world. Then you start getting these so called all white neighborhoods. Ethnicity identity declined. And the quote white identity prevailed. Race identity has more to do with a Europeans class system more than anything else. White is elite superior Right etc. While black represents Low level slave heathen inferiority. African ppl are different tones of brown. Humans don’t come in black?!!!

Here we see Jews, Italians, Poles, Ukrainians and other "undesirables" sweat their way across factory floors, climb to academic heights, even get elected to high national offices beyond the dreams of their ancestors. The data are presented clearly; the interpretations are crisp and penetrating. Roediger does a great service to his subjects who happened to be "Americans in the making". A must study for any scholar of race and assimilation, and a good read for anyone interested in how some of us got to be "Americans" even with the wrong religions, national origins, or accents as impediments fueled by homegrown bigots of an earlier time!

Like many others, I'm sure, I was sad when the series ended with "Scorpia Rising."Imagine my surprise, then, when I saw a section of the web page dedicated to "Alex Rider Books 1 - 10". After looking around, I saw that, indeed, Anthony Horowitz had decided to return to the world of MI6, Scorpia, spies, gadgets and the rest of it with "Russian Roulette : The Story of an Assassin." To say I was excited was an understatement. I ordered a copy, sat back, and waited.Looking back, I wish I had done just a bit more homework. When the book arrived, I greedily tore it open - and then stood staring in dismay. Because it turned out Alex Rider, the fourteen year old super spy, wasn't coming back after all.The book was a prequel.Soon, I came around, and began to read.I got over being disappointed very quickly."RR" opens up with a familiar face - the face of Yassen Gregororvich, the assassin who terminated Ian Rider in "Stormbreaker," which cast Alex into the spy world. In the beginning of the story, Yassen receives orders from his employers - Scorpia, one of the largest criminal bands in the world - to kill Alex, to punish the boy for defeating Herod Sayle. However, for the first time, Yassen is hesitant. Because, as readers of the series know, Yassen was trained by John Rider, Alex's father. But, there's a new element to his hesitation readers were not aware of in previous stories.Then begins the flashback...Fourteen year old Yasha Gregororvich is set on a life changing journey when his childhood home is destroyed by a powerful criminal. As Yasha grows into a man, he is bullied, mistreated, and must fight to survive, all the while being pulled into a world of evil and death he has no desire for, but won't let him go. In the end, it will be the pull of a trigger, and not his own choice, which decides his fate...All in all, the book was very good, giving us a very different picture of the seemingly bloodthirsty killer from "Strormbreaker" and "Eagle Strike". Yassen feels as though he was never given a chance to be anything but an assassin, and, in sympathetic understanding, tries to give Alex the shot for freedom he never had in a cool rewriting of the last scene in "Strombreaker," when Yassen kills Sayle."Next time they (MI6) ask you (to work for them), say no."However, the reason this is a four star is because of the gaping plot hole in the end.Spoiler alert.Now, there is a plot hole in this story, but I feel compelled to correct a mistake I made in an earlier review. I falsely stated that Yassen felt no loyalty to John Rider after discovering he was an agent for MI6. I reread the book, however, and saw what I had, eh, skipped.Yes, Yassen does, as I just said, figure out his mentor, Hunter, John Rider, the father of Alex Rider, was sent to infiltrate Scoria. The betrayal scars Yassen, and actually becomes the final domino in his journey as a killer.But Yassen did not reveal John to his superiors for two reasons - one, John had saved his life. Two, although he worked for them, Yassen hated Scorpia, and didn't care what happened to them....But that begs a new question, even as I correct my false claim. When Yassen dies in "Eagle Strike," why does he encourage Alex to work for Scorpia? Why does he did he seem to have such respect for Alex's father? "He was a killer like me..." What? Now Yassen is proud of himself?But this is a very good story, and earns its place at the Alex Rider table. Packed with emotion, action, and several cool cameos COUGH Mrs Rothman COUGH, it softens that soft spot left by "Scorpia Rising". And makes us hungrier for more.

This long-awaited novel reveals the biography of Yassen Gregorovitch, the mysterious Russian assassin in the Alex Rider series. Horowitz goes full-on from the beginning, as Yassen's childhood home is a village called Estrov, which happens to exist next to a biological weaponry factory, in which his parents are somehow tangled up. Then an accident occurs and the village is infected with anthrax, and the Russian government decides that obliterating the village with air-to-surface missiles is going to be easier than facing the media. Yassen, who was known as Yasha back then, escapes. From there the story is carried on to the Moscow gutters, billionaires' summer houses, and Scorpia's training facility in Malastago. The book fully explains Yassen's meeting with John Rider, Alex Rider, and Julia Rothman.The result is a high-octane game of Russian roulette, highlighting Yassen's struggles with his conscious and his eventual evolution into a cold-blooded murderer and his torment by the hands of Sharkovsky, a mafiaman who, quite literally, made him put up a revolver to his head.Recommended strongly if you read the Alex Rider series, even more strongly if you haven't.Lots of guns, weapons, and blood.Perfect.VBG

I've been waitin for this book since like....2008! or something like that, ever since Anthony mentioned it.idk why, but I loved Yassen, even though he was a "villain". There was just something about him.Of course, I was excited for the other Alex books, but I was still waiting and waiting for this, and it's finally here!Most of the other books I waited to get until they came out in paperback (so i could afford them haha), but I couldn't wait for this one!And I loved every second of it! Seeing how Yassen grew up, his friends, how he came accross Scorpia....It was just awesome, seeing him change and become the assassin we "know"I highly recommend this to everyone who's read the other 9 books of the series, and even for those who haven't, it's the perfect place to start! the series comes fully circle. This is the beginning of Alex's journey as well, since it involves his father somewhatI can't believe it's over!!! :(But THANK YOU ANTHONY!!! I will reread them over and over again forever :)

My teenage daughter loves this series and owns all of the books in the Alex Rider series. She's read each one numerous times ....seriously.

This prequel to the Alex Rider series features his oldest enemy and tells the story of how an assassin is made. Told in the same voice and style of the Rider books it adds both depth to the main character but also to his many confrontations with Rider.Some fans may be disappointed Alex Rider doesn't feature more in this suspenseful novel, but it stands alone as a fine thriller and offers new insight to the series and one of its most enigmatic characters.

I love the Alex Rider series, and think they are one of the best young adult series available. But, if you've read them all, you know they are pretty traumatic. I'm surprised they are still classified in Young Adult. Russian Roulette-the title says it all. It IS the story of an Assassin-a 19 y/o assassin. And it's not pretty. But, it is well written and if you're a fan, it's a great book. Hard to put down. But, Horowitz is just right on the edge here; in fact I predict many "challenges" for this book and quite possibly, a few actual bans.

I downloaded the Kindle version of this book and I like that I can read AND watch the videos that come with the book! The link to the videos was a little confusing to access. First you have to register your purchase and then you get an email stating you now have access to the online videos. Once on the website, I kept getting an error message that I didn't have access but I clicked on another link on the page and was able to see all of them. The videos are not boring! They are well-made and Tony is easy to watch and goes through every feature of Lightroom. I've learned so much about the program already and while watching on my Kindle I have Lightroom loaded on my computer and I can stop the videos and practice what I just learned! I like reading the book, but I get so excited about something I just read that I keep running to my computer to try it out. So the videos are great for me but the book is a great reference and has lots of detail. This has been a great investment and I have already gone back to re-do some photos that I adjusted previously while experimenting on my own. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who would like to learn Lightroom but thinks it may be too advanced.

First, Tony's book is very simple to read, thorough and exhaustive. From the most common features...to the hidden gems, he covers it all. He explains how to use each feature in a simple and easy to understand manner.However, in my opinion, here's what sets apart his from so many other great books on LR (and there are some good ones out there). He not only explains how to use the tools in LR but he explains and points out why you would WANT to use them. I was in no way a novice in LR before but I sure found out I wasn't taking full advantage of its many features. My photos have improved remarkably as a result of reading this book.Thanks Tony and Chelsea, you guys have not only taught me a lot but you've also freshened my love for photography again.

I was SO frustrated with Lightroom. Photoshop has been my Go-To editing software for YEARS. With all that folks were telling me about LR's superb organizational aspects, I had to give it a try. I was NOT a happy camper. There are just too many features embedded & I was missing most of the subtleties. Tony Northrup is an excellent presenter. I have trusted his observations on other content, and so turned to this book as my entry into fluency. I COULD NOT BE MORE PLEASED!!!!!!!!!! The text includes HOURS of video training not available on You Tube; the text becomes a great reference afterwards. Tony is clear and concise. He will begin a topic, offer an overview for context, and then later delve into greater depth when his viewer is ready. The order of his topics is well considered; his examples amplify the skill set he's speaking about. It's obvious he really knows his material, but he never makes me feel overwhelmed and lost. I was very disappointed with the practice tests. I found them to contain incorrect and out of date answers. It is a shame that Cliffs Test Prep has allowed this to happen. Total waste of money.

John, you deserve a good smack on the head. Where did you even get your phD? Spelling errors ( ex: test 2, #135), incorrect answers ( ex: test 2, #57; test 5, #65) and your one line "explanations" for the correct answers is basically the equivalent of a "because I said so" all culminated with me wasting 5 hours of my life.Please, if you are trying to pass your license exam, DON'T BUY THIS BOOK. I feel horribly robbed.

I read this book in researching my own book on the Arminian/Calvinist debate. I needed to read a book that defined and defended the Arminian perspective--and I heard Geisler was the man to read. My information was correct. Articulate and brilliant, Geisler presented several concepts and ideas that brought me up short and made me think about the answers in a way I'd never done before. Though he calls himself a "moderate Calvinist," in most cases his beliefs are more of a modified Arminian in my opinion. The implication is that he has found that perfect balance between the Arminian and Calvinist perspective--perhaps he IS somewhere in the middle, but the way he reads into a passage instead of seeing the clear meaning from out of certain important passages still has him coming just short of a complete, biblical interpretation. This book is well worth reading, but I remain unmoved in my original stance. I may not share his system of belief, but I'm very impressed with Norman Geisler.

Sproul.It is wonderful to see the Reformed and Arminian view point on salvation side to side.This book helped me to see clearly that faith is a gift from God, unless God gives it to you, you can never believe and be saved. Therefore, salvation belongs to God and Him alone. Ps. 3:8 Ephesians 2:8

Dr Geisler does a good job of explaining both the pros and cons of each of the 5 points of what is today called Calvinism (TULIP) AKA Reformed Theology. The interesting thing is Dr. Geisler states he is not a "hyper-Calvinist" but is instead a "Moderate" Calvinist. After reading his book I do not see how he can be any kind of Calvinist because once you remove any of the 5 points the whole Calvinist notion falls apart.The book is well worth the read.[...].

First, the caveat to my review: I am probably unique among the reviewers of this book in that I am not a nuclear engineer. I have a strong educational and professional background in chemistry, physics, and math, and have been working on projects involving engineered safety systems and risk management in other technologically advanced industries. I have recently become involved in talks with representatives from the nuclear industry. For my own preparation I undertook the long hard slog through the Lamarsh-Baratta book, "Introduction to Nuclear Engineering" (Third Edition) to help me grasp background information and concepts in this field. Although I was sometimes initially unclear about the use of units (barns, dollars, etc.) and nomenclature (meat, safe shutdown earthquake, etc.) I generally found the text to eventually explain them adequately. One critique is that at some points in the text the authors use terminology freely without first defining it, only to define it much later. I found this and the relatively large number of typographical errors to be distracting.This is clearly a very complex subject, and would no doubt be helped by good classroom instruction. Nonetheless, I still found considerable value in the book. I liked chapter seven, "The Time-Dependent Reactor" particularly well, and especially found sections 7.3 and 7.5 "Control Rods and Chemical Shim" and "Fission Product Poisoning" to be enlightening. I found the commentary on reactor stability and the explanation of post-shutdown Xenon-135 buildup and reactor deadtime extremely helpful. I also found section 7.6 on incore fuel management useful.From my experience in aviation (where it is a common parameter), I enjoyed the discussion of the utility of the Reynolds number in section 8.4, and found the ensuing discussions of turbulent flow, liquid metals, and boiling heat transfer to be fascinating. My safety systems background is primarily in aviation, where it is stressed that every design is a compromise: I was pleased to see the same acknowledged on p. 455 by Bill Minkler (who now writes the "Backscatter" commentary for "Nuclear News") with his quote that reactor design is "the art of compromise."I was pleased with chapters nine ("Radiation Protection") and eleven ("Reactor Licensing, Safety, and the Environment"), which are the most directly applicable to me. The concept of "Relative Biological Effectiveness" is well covered beginning on p. 472, and the discussions of radiation protection are helpful. I found the section dealing with deterministic versus stochastic effects of radiation on pp. 479-480 to be helpful, and thought the glossary of radiation protection on pp. 539-542 to be a valuable reference. I wanted to better understand the principles of Monte Carlo analysis, which is covered in chapter ten, and while much of the discussion was helpful, it was a bit more general than I had expected.The overview of reactor licensing in chapter eleven is quite helpful, although becoming a bit dated. The discussion of multiple barriers to prevent to escape of radiation begins on p. 623 and provides an excellent general overview to the safety systems involved at a reactor site. Section 11.4 ("Dispersion of Effluents") was excellent overall, with plume formation and diffusion of effluents well covered for all Pasquill conditions (except G). This was an area new to me, as I have minimal meteorological knowledge, and I found the qualitative explanations and illustrations to be excellent, although the mathematical reasoning was at some points a bit hard to follow.The discussion of Design Basis Accidents (and particularly LOCA scenarios) beginning on p. 681 is excellent, as is the recap of the Three Mile Island and Chernobyl accidents which follow. I was pleased to see the introduction to risk management beginning on p. 711, which discusses 10CFR50.34a requiring operators to keep radioactive materials in effluents "as low as reasonably achievable." Oddly, the book the fails to name the acronym that logically follows from this (ALARA, of course) or discuss its use in the contemporary nuclear community to any significant degree.There is a lot of great content here, and while I am sure that I missed some of the more intricate mathematical nuances of the book, I think it was helpful to me overall. The book is sometimes a bit unclear, and some of the mathematical reasoning seems a bit fuzzy. A bigger complaint is that each chapter has numerous problems at the end, yet there is no answer key to determine if you did the problem correctly.I don't claim to have as much experience in the field as the vast majority of people who will read and review this book, but I do believe that overall the book, while not perfect, gives a good introduction to the subject, and will serve as a valuable reference in the future.

If you get the paperback edition, be aware that it is not technically supposed to be sold in the US (it says so in the red triangle in the upper left-hand corner) and that it is lacking the tables and charts in the back.And, of course, like everyone else has said, a lot of the actual numbers in the book are wrong.

 When I purchase a used book, I expect it to have cosmetic defects. I do not expect it to have functional defects. This book was described as used-acceptable condition. The book arrived with a broken spine, which was pulling away from the pages, the only thing holding the book cover onto the pages was the paper liner glued to the cover. Sorry that is not what I would call acceptable condition. Yes you can still read the text, but the whole thing is one drop away from falling apart completely.

This book is well written, and covers a lot of important material reasonably well. You will learn a lot by reading it.It does however have one huge defect for anyone who because of poor quality teaching, or because they are just really interested in the field, has decided to use the book to teach themselves Nuclear Engineering. There are no solutions to any problems in the book. Most textbooks, at least introductory text books, give numerical answers to selected problems. This makes it possible for a student to do a problem, and ensure that he did it correct. Without it working problems is an exercise in futility as you will never know if you did them correctly. Since working out problems is the single best way to learn a technical subject you are probably best looking elsewhere for a book to learn from.

This is the handbook everyone STILL uses apparently.Monte Carlo is not covered here, though there are places that is covered better.

I have studied the most important chapters of the book "Introduction to Nuclear Engineering". It is more than an introduction. I found the book to be a very good one for someone with some fundamental knowledge of nuclear technology. When I started the reading of the book, I had some knowledge already. The book helped me to go deeper into the nuclear subject. I found the example problems to be very good. I really recommend this book. I did not find that many typos as other reviewers claim.

I read the book cover-to-cover. For a third edition, it has an astounding number of typos and errors - dozens per chapter - many math blunders - a few conceptual mistakes. It's fairly distracting from the material. The reader is constantly second-guessing the text - looking for the next mistake which is never far away. There's something dysfunctional about this publishing team to continue ignoring the huge number of errors now into this third edition. (The 'errata' list at Prentice-Hall website is obsolete. Those have already been corrected in our copy, printed 2005. Their list says nothing about the many errors we observed.)

For a book that is supposed to be an intro to nuclear engineering, it is very vague.The questions in the homework are difficult to answer if the book is the only source we are using as a reference.There are several typos through out the book.Amazon was super fast delivering the book though...great service.
