This is an excellent book to learn about objects and ActiveX components. The explanations are very clear and the examples on the C.D are very good.

About a year ago, I wrote a review about this book. Everyone was saying that this was a great book, so when I gave this book only 1 star, I took alot of heat from people who think that "Dan's the Man!!". I decided to review this book again. This is my second review and my result is still the same. Dan may be the guru of Visual Basic but he cannot communicate those thoughts into written words. Don't get me wrong, Dan knows how to talk and this book is full of talk, but talk is not teaching nor will talk help you master the advanced subjects such as COM. In this book, Dan starts to tell you about subject, then he goes off on a tangent. Sooner or later, he might return to the subject. The cartoons in the book have a striking resemblance to "Bevis and Butthead". That is a scary thought! Bevis and Butthead becoming software developers and then writing a book about it. The cheap sales pitches for software that his company sells should have been put into an appendix. This book is a very large book (800+ pages) but if you cut out the cartoons and all of the talk, this book would be 1/2 of it's size. I recommend Peter Vogel's book "Visual Basic Object and Component Handbook" instead. Dan is a very smart man but that does not mean he is a great author.

One of the major advances in the history of VB was the introduction, a couple revs ago, of creating the objects formerly known as COM, ActiveX components. This opened up a whole world of new applications, and knocked a chip off C++ programmers' shoulders. But even wrapped safely beneath VB's development tools, COM is still a complex subject with plenty of traps for the unwary.But Dan Appleman, dean of Win32 and COM programming, has come to the rescue with this book. Perplexed, indeed. Through clear writing, carefully reasoned descriptions spiced with humor that occasionally has attitude, and thoroughness, the author almost makes clear a complex subject. It still took me a couple of reads to grasp it all, but the work was well worth it. As other reviewers have observed, reading this book through once, or lightly, can leave you more confused than before. Put some work into it, though, and you'll be richly rewarded.The 28 chapters spread throughout cover every aspect of ActiveX components, from their COM underpinnings to practical ways to build and use them in your projects. Particularly interesting were the chapters ActiveX Myths, IIS Applications, Advanced Techniques, and Multithreading.The CD-ROM alone is worth the price of admission. It has a bit of promotional stuff for the author's company, Desaware, Inc., but otherwise is full of good information. The help file has a half-hour video presentation was delivered at the 1998 Orlando VBITS about the life of a programmer and, of course, the sample code from the book.Even though the reader is never in doubt what the author does for a living, besides writing books, the Guide to the Perplexed is one the true must-have books for every professional VB 6 programmer, whether or not you use ActiveX components in your applications.

Dan Appleman is my VB idol. He got a little full of himself in this book yet he kept his world-known teaching technique as excellent as ever. This book features TONS of material for pure reading, more than the kind of material that makes you sit next to your computer with the book on your lap and your hands on the keyboard. It explains every little detail in the technology called Com/ActiveX, even things you didn't really wanted or cared about knowing. Not all of what he wrote about is important, but most is very useful. A great book for the eager to learn. I, for one, loved it.

Why is it that programmers, who live in a world where one false keystroke can spell doom, so often have difficulty putting two readable sentences together?I am an experienced ASP developer with self-taught (sloppy) VB skills. My aim is to add a much needed element of knowing elegance to my code. This book has helped make the "knowing" part of my aim happen. Too many books offer endless examples detailing how to build widget calculators and gizmo tabulators. And you know what? All you really learn is how to copy and paste sample code and merrily run around the office showing everyone your wonderful widget calculators and gizmo tabulators. (Of course, if there was a typo in the source code or a bug in the sample app, all you can do is whine on pages like this about how the book sucks because you haven't learned enough to fix the darn thing.)Too many books walk you step by step by step by ... through everything from installing VB to configuring MTS. I agree with Mr. Appleman. The MS documentation is excellent. No need to rehash it here. What this book gives is a very entertaining and down-to-earth discussion of the theory behind the subject (even a look at COM in the form of a comic book) laced with the author's clear advice on how to apply the theory to the real world.The presentation reminds me of a "For Dummies" book and I mean this in a very positive way. The most heavily used book on my shelf to this day is "SQL for Dummies." Appleman's book is great in the same way. I'm already sold on his VB/win32 API book. Can't wait to start reading it.

In his brief introduction to this first volume of a landmark series about a cyborg, Dark Horse president Mike Richardson cites all the thematic questions you'd expect--what makes people "human," what is a soul, are machines capable of authentic emotion? And while Shirow Masamune's masterful Ghost in the Shell certainly addresses such issues, often in profound ways, it's worth nothing that Richardson does leave out one question: What are the erotic implications of this blurring between the organic and the synthetic?It's not an idle question, but rather one that confronts readers in several different forms, perhaps most obviously when the protagonist, the immanently capable Major Motoko Kusanagi, regularly appears in pinup-style poses. One senses, though, that these are bones thrown to a certain audience segment and, for better or worse, they're not apt to trouble hetero female readers who may be accustomed to a lot more cheesecake in manga (not to mention mainstream superhero comics). Moreover, it soon becomes apparent that Masamune is playing a much deeper game here as he goes about deliberately undermining the erotic--or at least conventional assumptions about it and conventional approaches to it in comics--by positioning readers to be hit hard by far more disturbing images. In one battle scene, Kusanagi loses an arm at the elbow, metallic tendrils dangling from the stump, and she barely misses a beat--to her, it's a spare part that can be fixed or replaced, but for readers, it destroys the integrity of the female form and disrupts the pleasure of any passive voyeurism that might be occurring. Similarly, at one point, an asexual cyber-nemesis known as "The Puppeteer" takes refuge in the body of a nude female cyborg and is later interrogated while constrained--but all that remains of her (it?) is the head and topless torso, which is in fact a good example of the "shell" referenced in the title.A feminist read might contend that this is an instance of objectification in literal, even crude, terms. However, when viewed within the context of Masamune's thematic concerns, it makes complete sense. If nothing else, The Ghost in the Shell is about "programming" in the word's broadest possible meaning. That means not only the conflict between outside control versus autonomy in computers, networks, robots, and other cyber-entities, but also in groups and nations (it's subtly suggested that laws are a form of programming) and, of course, in individuals in that we're subject to the "instructions" written into us by culture, psychology, and language. Standing apart from this mechanistic view is Masamune's construct of the "ghost"--a term that roughly translates to "psyche" or "soul." That's not to say that ghosts can't be infiltrated or manipulated by criminal elements like any other part of an apparatus, but rather that this distinction between soul and "mecha" is central to nearly everything that takes place. Readers, too, are naturally going to follow a learned (i.e., installed) "program" when decoding manga or any other text and that includes reading its artwork. So when Masamune provides troubling images that don't map to our expectations, he is problemating the process and helping readers see our own programming for what it is, as an automatic reaction and not reflective of something essential either about ourselves or the images themselves. And that's true whether the input stimuli we're receiving is mildly erotic (it never really exceeds this level) or violent in nature.That said, it's not as if the action in The Ghost in the Shell is abstract or presented as a token nod at genre conventions--it's vigorous, unapologetic, and often thrilling. As Kusanagi leads her small squad of government commandoes against terrorists, hackers, and corporate criminals, the dynamic page layouts and effortlessly fluid storytelling draw us into the firefights and chase sequences like few other works in the medium. However, on a scale that may be unparalleled in graphic fiction, there's also a tremendous density of ideas. Sometimes, as if realizing the challenge of delivering on both tracks, Masamune includes footnote-like clarifications in the gutters so as not to slow things down with expository dialogue or caption boxes. Then, as a bonus treat, there's a 14-page section of author's notes in the book's backmatter that's keyed to specific pages, with the creator providing annotations on his work that make for fascinating reading in their own right.It's this combination of brain and brawn that causes The Ghost in the Shell to appeal, as the saying goes, to both the head and the heart. But that's not all. As the first volume concludes Masamune takes things in a wholly different direction: While the story has been rubbing up against the metaphysical throughout, in the final chapter, it breaks all the way through and goes for the out-and-out mystical. There's not much I can say that won't ruin things for newcomers to the franchise, so I'll leave it at that. In short, Ghost in the Shell is hard sci-fi of the best possible sort: the type that's so full of both undiluted artfulness and philosophy that it's arguably a must-read even for those who don't usually take to the genre.-- Peter Gutiérrez

Alas, I've been eagerly awaiting this "definitive" version of Ghost in the Shell and it's a pretty big disappointment. The size is certainly not deluxe (it's no longer or wider than a normal trade paperback of an American comic; I've attached an image comparing it to a Doom Patrol TPB and a DC "Deluxe" collection), and somewhat amazingly, the contents are censored yet again despite an 18+ warning (I've attached an image showing how a rather famous scene is presented here). The quality of pages is fine, and it's cool to have the story presented in the Japanese right-to-left style with the original SFX, but this is a pretty major letdown given how the book was advertised.As for extras: I don't really know what's included beyond what would have been in the normal edition. There's a glossary for the newly restored Japanese sound effects, but good luck reading it -- it's in incredibly small white font against a black background, as you can see.Alas, swing and a miss for Kodansha. I got this for $14.99 and can live with it, but run the heck away from the MSRP of $29.99.

There are a lot of reviews panning this manga due to it censoring a certain scene. As much as I hate censorship, I can understand why the publisher chose to do so in this case. The last thing the publisher wants is to get put in the news for the content while the new GITS movie just came out. My personal opinion is they would actually be better off with some controversy since that brings more attention (and sales as a byproduct). Shirow himself stated he wanted the scene removed but I think that was just done to make the content more accessible and sell-able.Aside from the censorship, I have found numerous grammar errors throughout the manga. It's not like they're just spelling mistakes, some of them are bad enough to where you have to actually stop and try to decipher what they mean. These mistakes are very easy to see, so the publisher obviously didn't have someone do any proofreading. This cannot be explained in any way other than pure laziness on their part.The quality of the print is fine and I am sure most people would appreciate its presentation as a hard cover.

The Ghost in the Shell Vol. 1 The Kindle version is the first edition of the book which is censored. Whole scenes are removed. I would hold off on this until they release a Kindle version of the second edition of the book.

There are typos and this is NOT acceptable. It's an insult to the story. In addition there are some pretty disjointed conversations which, if not done on purpose, can only be issues with the translation its annoying because the majority of the translation is done quite well. It just goes to show the laziness in production.Beyond that though its a pretty nice edition. If you complain about the size then you've never seen a regular one volume manga paperback. This edition is roughly the same size as the "Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind" deluxe edition. While I don't agree with censorship on principle this was NOT Censored Shirow Masamune simply decided that the lesbian sex scenes caused more problems than he would have liked as well as not adding much to the story anyway (besides explicitly stating that Kusanagi swings both ways). As far as bonus content complaints, again they are jumping the gun, as others before me have said there are a few entirely new pages and a lot more full color pages as compared to the original version.See photos:-- The first one should be "The puppeteer"-- The last one should be "squeeze" not sleaze unless there exists a usage of sleaze that I am not aware of-- The second one should be "may" not "my"

What an interesting book. The author explains complicated processes as though it is child's play. I finally understand how our body works at a cellular level and it all makes sense. This guy should be a teacher. If you are looking for a book about aging well (and everyone should be!) and aging without illness to enjoy the longest, healthiest life you can, this will help you get there. Thank you Dr. Verburgh.

Really gives a great overview of how our body work and ages. It cites a lot of studies and how some people live longer. I highly recommend this book and it has prompted me to change some of my eating habits.

This book is an excellent resource. It's hard to find a knock against the book. One thing I feel would make this book better is, a section in the back of the book that provides an explanation for the 'Stop and Consider' questions. Even though the material presented provides the necessary information to answer the questions, it would be helpful to have an explanation from the authors to ensure the reader has come to the correct conclusion of the material when answering the 'Stop and Consider' questions. Otherwise, very nice book! I recommend it!
