Scroll of Kings is a collection of rules, etc., centered around the theme of armies and warfare. Within are clarifications to the mass combat system, stats for siege weaponry, info on the military practices and sample units from a variety of nations (including several not previously covered), and other stuff of that nature. There is also info on the major directional gods of war, their worship and agendas.The one potentially confusing thing is the overall organization. The book is arranged by direction, such that the rules for sieges are in the section on the South, whereas naval combat is in the chapter on the West. It makes thematic sense, but it means you have to have a good sense of the themes involved (or have read the whole book already) if you want to just look up a particular thing. Of course, the whole thing isn't that long, so it's not a big problem. Also, most things with stats are at the end in the appendices, so that while naval combat is discussed in the West chapter, the actual ship stats are in the back.On the whole, it's a nice addition to the series that will come in handy for players interested in making use of the War Ability, or for Storytellers of a series set during wartime. The additions and clarifications within are useful and welcome in that case but not essential for those less interested in games focusing on this particular theme.

The Mass Combat rules for Exalted need quite a lot of work. They're clumsy to work with and some of the mechanics are simply poorly thought out (e.g., the way Morale scales for larger armies provides for ridiculous results in which a very small force of mortals can, without much trouble, rout most of a 10,000 man strong enemy force of mortals. No Exalted or heroic mortals need be involved). I'm running a campaign in which an important battle is coming up, and so I bought this book assuming that it would feature a better and streamlined ruleset that would save me a lot of time and provide for a better play experience.Unfortunately, the book doesn't deliver.It outlines a lot of flavor for military forces in the different regions of Creation, including a few stat blocks for different kinds of troops. It also features some mildly useful information for ships and other military equipment, such as siege engines and cannons. These details are useful, to be sure. But what use is this level of detail when the system itself won't work without extensive house-ruling?I own most of the Exalted 2nd Ed books, and this is the only one which I regret purchasing. You can obtain a great deal of the flavor from the relevant Compass of Terrestrial Directions books, and statting out armies and units isn't that hard. The main contribution this book should have made was improving the core system of Mass Combat, and that is exactly what it doesn't do in any shape or way.With so many other excellent Exalted supplements, I suggest you pass on this one.

It IS a good book. Yet it could be better.Has several new rules that are not impresive they could be better and possibly could even have more of them written up to spice mass combats and make them even unique.It has several new units and ideas and siege craft that is AWESOME, really this is a must for those that are interested in giving real world stats in this fantasy setting.Many cities and towns are given stats for Mass Combat but MANY other important are spread in the Compasses of Terrestrial Direction and it makes all the stuff like tossed around. I think they should have included everything in ONE book instead of giving references to books released and even in those not yet released.They could even have created newe Charms and applications for Mass Combat effects and even exemplified the rules and traits of the same long tick combat that many players are yet not familiar with.It is good, yet it could be better.

This is one of the first books written on performance testing. The author was looking for a book on the subject, couldn't find any, and so decided to write one himself. It covers all things you will need to think about when you are asked to do a performance test. Such as deciding on what to test, how to generate load, how to script user activities, how the test environment measures up to the production environment, data you need to execute your test but also how to collect data from the servers and applications you are testing. It offers a solid base from where to start your testing activities.However the book feels outdated at times. For instance it mentions Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) as something futuristic. Luckily the author made a conscious effort to make the book technology independent. Because of this most of the content is still relevant today.

Nice to have for any performance test professionals and QA Manager as well as Project Manager to understand more deeply and clearly what / how / when test need to be done including process , timing , testing , analysis , environments , monitoring , data sets and more other steps involved to properly test application to meet performance requirements criteria and customer expectation

This is a book for newbies and explain the concepts and process well. Not recommended for seasoned professionals.

I recommend this book to any Quality Assurance specialist who is involved in performance testing. It provides details on how to effectively plan and conduct performance testing. While the book helps to define a test strategy, it also explain how to analyze the performance test results.

Very good for performance testing planing and point out the key points that have to pay attention both in preparation and execution stage of performance testing.

The author describes (on page 1) Performance Testing as a neglected cousin of Unit, Functional, and System Testing. The latter three already have high maturity levels in business organisations.Hardware-software testing in Information and Communications Technology (ICT) performance is specifically, though generically addressed by the author.The performance measurements described by the author makes use of criteria for –- Availability (amount of capacity available)- Response time- Throughput (rate)- Utilization (amount of use of available capacity)The author advises the use of automated testing methods and tools, using hardware-software combinations. The testing procedures are advisedly managed as projects with the use of project management tools (such as MS Project)I, the reader, suspect the paucity of performance testing in ICT industries is largely a consequence of the fact that there are so many variables in local and global networks. For example, at a local level, British Telecoms (BT) has a monopoly on domestic and small business telephonic and Internet infrastructure, which means performance testing on local networks can be extremely variable, because BT does not maintain consistent levels of maintenance (this is an empirical fact)Big businesses also have an insubordinate influence on network availability that small business don’t have, so a dominant organisation like BT will give more attention to bigger businesses, which is why performance testing is less important to them. Smaller businesses therefore need performance testing to optimise their hardware-software performance under disadvantageous conditions.The author therefore quite rightly addresses a subject matter that should have been addressed by all parties concerned to help control local and global industry standards in ICT systems performance.Notwithstanding the aforesaid, the subject matter of the book can be rather boring to readers who are not motivated by a serious interest in systems performance testing (including software programming performance testing)I give it five stars for its comprehensive and readable content. More knowledgeable readers may assess it differently.

This review focuses on Volume 2 on Isaiah for the NICOT series. I'm a preacher and full time pastor who uses commentaries in my sermon preparation. I've found that this commentary is very helpful on a number of points. It provides a wealth of relevant resources that I've typically not found in other commentaries (I'll illustrate that in a moment). He deals with the Hebrew exegetical ideas and source issues without spending a lot of time (no bogging down in minutia as some have a tendency to do). His footnotes do contain the minutia on textual issues that some require or desire. Yet in the main text of his commentary he deals with crucial textual issues if they affect the exegetical outcome. That's helpful, especially his pithy summaries of the various views. Summaries are well done in this commentary.The second volume has over 700 pages of information on Isaiah 40-66.Since it may be the greatest passage in Isaiah, let me zoom in on how he handles the fourth Servant song. (Isaiah 52:13 to 53:3). For this section he gives 37 pages of information. He breaks the passage down into the following outline:a. Astonishment and Rejection (52:13-53:3)b. Punished for others (53:4-6)c. Unjustly punished (53:7-9)d. Many made righteous (53:10-12)He provides his own unique translation for each one.In section a. Astonishment and Rejection 52:13-53:3 Oswalt prefers the translation in 52:15 of the Hebrew 'Yazzeh' [sprinkle] to be interpreted as 'startle' because of the parallelism meaning. He also interacts with a variety of other opinions, including a footnote on 52:14 that introduces some technical points about protasis and apodasis as support for his position. They really do make the most sense of all the options (imo).I was convinced by his points. For application ideas, see Oswalt's NIVAC on Isaiah. In that volume, which I also own, he draws out practical application to Philippians 2:5-11 as he discusses the idea of sacrificing for others. Then he draws out contemporary significance to this passage in his NIVAC by focusing on Accepting the offering by an appropriate response to what Jesus has done for us. He has many preachable points in this section.Overall, Oswalt has written a worthy commentary that I believe is an excellent addition to every pastor's library. I also have found Alec Motyer's commentary on Isaiah to be very helpful, especially for a quick evaluation of literary style and outline ideas.Oswalt's NIVAC commentary won the Gold Medallion Award. I think this commentary I am reviewing here, the NICOT, is worthy of an award. It's that good.Back to the passage I was using to illustrate Oswalt's NICOT Vol 2 with.At the end of his commentary on Isaiah 52:13-53:12, he has an Excursus.Actually it is a select bibliography on the passage. However, the bibliography is organized into categories:The Identity of the ServantNew Testament and Early Christian InterpretationJewish InterpretationExegetical and Theological StudiesAlthough several of the bibliographical entries are obviously in German, and useless to most of us, most of them are in English.

Dr. John Oswalt is without question one of the best scholars on the book of Isaiah. His 2-volumn study is first and foremost of definitive works on the Old Testament prophet Isaiah. Dr. Oswalt has done a video series on the book of Isaiah for the Francis Asbury Society. His multi-segment video is an excellent means to get to observe Dr. Oswalt in a classroom setting. Anyone interested in the book of Isaiah this work is a must read and a valuable asset to your personal library.

I bought this book to help me lead a home study on Isaiah, which I "knew", but not in depth the way I "know" the NT. These 2 volumes are an excellent guide. They provide excellent insight to the historical context, have in-depth discussions on the more difficult parts of the book (for example 1 author or multiple), and takes time to discuss the theological impacts of the text along the way. If this is a book of the Bible that you want to know in greater detail, I highly recommend you purchase this 2 volume set to help you in your studies.

Oswalt's commentary on Isaiah comes in two volumes, but really should be read as one work. With that in mind, I will post the same review for both volumes of this commentary.Oswalt takes a largely amillennial approach to the text. He is a sane exegete and especially careful about pressing poetic-prophetic language to mean more than it should. In critical issues, Oswalt writes from a conservative perspective. He occasionally engages the drivel of scholars, who think Isaiah should be chopped up into tiny pieces and assigned to different authors, but the bulk of this commentary is devoted to explaining the text of Isaiah. He writes with a "big picture" view of Isaiah's message, while still having enough space to discuss items of particular interest in the details. The commentary does not demand knowledge of Hebrew to be useful (but a little bit never hurts!) The introduction was useful for summing up historical information and appreciating the situation of Isaiah's day.Oswalt does a brilliant job exposing the hypocrisy of those that would praise the theology of Isaiah, but then try to re-assign the Cyrus prophecy to a date that places it after the fact. Repeatedly, Oswalt demonstrates from Isaiah's argument in chapters 40-48 that the whole argument for Yahweh's superiority to idols rests on the fact of His ability to know Cyrus' actions over a century in advance. In essence, to deny the integrity of Isaiah's prophecy demands an outright rejection of the book as a whole, since it would otherwise be presenting itself in deceptive fabricated terms.The main reason I give Oswalt five stars is because I believe he has done better than any commentator to date in coming to grips with the main thrust of Isaiah's message. For the first part of the book (1-39), Oswalt sees the trust in God as the predominant issue facing Israel. The basic question is whether Israel will choose to ally with the nations, or to trust God for her salvation. For the second part of the book, (40-66), Oswalt argues that "Servanthood" is the binding theme, namely as the means of Israel's salvation in spite of their shortcomings. The central question he raises repeatedly creates a tension between the ideal and the actual, when he asks, "How can this Israel become that Israel?"This is not to say that Oswalt's explanations are completely flawless. In a big two-volume work such as this, everyone is bound to find something to disagree with. For instance, I found myself unconvinced by his suggestion that Immanuel is really Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz. I also found it odd that Oswalt appears to believe in a final gathering of historic national Israel (for instance, his comments on 11:10-16), a viewpoint which I believe ignores the crucial redefining of "Israel" in the NT. On the whole though, I do not feel that these disagreements are significant enough to detract from the overall value of this work.Ultimately though, I consider this book to be one of the most helpful expositions of Isaiah available today (outside of the Bible itself, obviously!), and I heartily recommend it to anyone who wants to learn the message of the prophet.

Excellent commentary. You don't have to be a scholar, minister, or Hebrew student to appreciate this commentary. All the fore mentioned will benefit, but any serious student of the Bible will be enriched.

One of the most thorough commentaries on Isaiah. This will probably become the new standard. I have found this useful, along with Constable's notes (to get my theological take) while preaching through this portion of Isaiah. I like Oswalt's work even better than Young's (which has been the standard).

About the Author

A beloved author, translator, and filmmaker, Assia Djebar (1936–2015) was born Fatima-Zohra Imalayen in the Algerian town of Cherchell. Her novels and poems boldly faced the challenges and struggles she knew as a feminist living under patriarchy, and as an intellectual living under colonialism and its aftermath. Djebar’s writing, marked by a regal unwillingness to compromise in the face of ethical, linguistic, and narrative complexities, attracted devoted followers around the world, and received numerous awards and recognitions, including the Venice International Critics’ Prize, the Neustadt International Prize for Literature, the Yourcenar Prize, the Frankfurt Peace Prize, and a knighthood in France’s Legion of Honor. She was the first Algerian woman to be admitted to France’s prestigious École Normale Supérieure, and the first writer from the Maghreb to be admitted to the Académie Française.

My second Assia Djebar work. She brings each writer to life memorializing them in their deaths. Tribute to the Algerian writers murdered in the war for independence and the Civil War, but so much more. She weaves together their tales and those of others in a patchwork quilt if writing that captures the interconnectedness of Algeria's people and intellectuals. However, many of the allusions were lost on this non-Algerian reader.

Just a must.

If I could give this pile of crap 0 stars, it would probably still be too many. It is disorganized, confusing, frustratingly dull, and is down right painful to read, but not for any of the reasons the pull quotes on the back imply. It is self-indulgent, pointless tripe with a side of name dropping of names most people outside of Algeria have never heard. This book serves no purpose. It did put me right to sleep several times though, so it may be helpful as a sleep aid. Or to balance a wobbly table.

I bought this book hoping to find info about the algerian writers mentioned on the back cover, what I found was more interesting.. detailed info about the turbulance in algeria, personal experiences,stories and very important history of a sister country our arab jounalism failed to report and/or bring to us. I was happy to have bought the book.
