Amazon.com Review

Oprah Book Club® Selection, March 1998: Here on Earth is set in motion when March Murray and her teenage daughter travel from their California home to New England. Their stay is to be brief. Judith Dale, her childhood housekeeper-cum-foster mother, has died, and March must set things to right and get out of gloomy Jenkintown as quickly as possible. "Five days tops," she reassures her scientist husband. Instead, she is pulled back into the arms of Hollis, her first love--an avaricious, Heathcliff-like individual who radiates sulfur and cruelty. "She left and didn't come back, not even when he called her, and yet here she is, on this dark night; here and no place else." In this deep fable of loss and control, love and fear, Alice Hoffman allows us into her characters' cores and makes us wish their fortunes were happier. Here on Earth is filled with wisdom, what-ifs, and animals who seem, if not to know more than human beings, at least to know how to shy from danger.

I was prepared to love this novel as much as I have most of Hoffman's work. The imagery and sensory experience of the setting did not disappoint, however, I did find the antagonist to be lacking in the sympathetic qualities that would have made him so attractive to the protagonist. In addition, the ending kind of came out of nowhere as though the author was tired of writing and just wanted to wrap it up which I found disappointing. I realize this is a highly acclaimed piece of work and one could certainly do much worse, but as an avid Alice Hoffman fan, I didn't find it to be her best.

Alice Hoffman called this novel her homage to Bronte. I think it did a great job of bringing the character of Heathcliffe and putting his abusive and obsessive behavior into a modern setting. It's a very unpleasant story but it also did a lot to show how domestic violence can creep into someone's life. The character of Gwen was my favorite. At first she seemed like a moody annoying teen but quickly became the most fully formed and clever of the characters. She was inspirational in her humanity. There were magical elements to the novel like the racehorse Tarot and the legend of the foxes and the ever oppressive plague of rabbits. The many ways love can be toxic and destructive is explored.I really enjoyed this novel and found it very readable but sadly it didn't grip me enough to think about reading it multiple times like I have with Wuthering Heights. Still I highly recommend it.

Even though I found the book hard to put down, I had a number of problems with it. I picked up on the similarities to Wuthering Heights quite soon, and then read that it was the author's homage to Bronte. That was great, as I love that book. But Hollis was only a sympathetic character when he was very young, and March, who seemed at first to be a sensible woman, did things I couldn't believe she would do--especially with her daughter there. I became disgusted with both of them. But I have loved many of Alice Hoffman's books, and this won't keep me from reading more of them, as I love her writing.

Here on Earth was a beautifully crafted novel of real life, tragic stories, intricate characters and a peek into the life of a woman who visits her past and then can't break free.I LOVED this novel for so many reasons. Firstly, I didn't measure it against any other novel, written by Hoffman or anyone else. As a stand alone story, it was absolutely stunning. March, the mother, Gwen, the daughter and the whole cast of tragic characters in this small town were fleshed out brilliantly. The story of Gwen falling back into her past relationship with a person she'd pledged her love to as a teenager, the slippery slope downward and the daughter's voice of reason was so compelling, I was turning Kindle pages long into the night.Don't be deterred by the low star reviews here. If you don't go into this novel expecting it to be a repeat of your favorite Hoffman novel, you will love how the book keeps you racing to the ending.

Wow. Just wow. I ran across a quote from the book "Here on Earth" by Alice Hoffman on one of my favorite blogs, Everyday Strange, and it piqued my curiosity enough to fork over some dough for a read slightly different than my go-to. It was so worth every penny."Here on Earth" by Alice Hoffman is a love story unlike any others I've ever read.  It's like six love stories crafted together into one beautifully written novel that highlights both the beauty and the pain that we are willing to endure to follow our hearts to the end of Earth and beyond. And of course the last few paragraphs gutted me to the point I couldn't sleep for a good hour despite the late hour I sacrificed finishing it cover to cover yesterday, though you'd have to read the entire book for it to enrapture you the same way. What I disliked: It switched perspectives a lot. One paragraph would be from the teenagers mind. Two paragraphs later it would be from the moms perspective. It was hard to get used to, but once I did it was lovely. I also disliked the amount of extramarital affairs; however the reviews did indicate it would be secretively dark so I should have guessed. What I liked: It was beautifully written, thought provoking and in a tone I haven't felt in a while. It really spoke volumes about the power of love and how it compels us to be something else - something more - something new. It also described a season, (in life as well as the weather) so astonishingly well that I'm not going to even try to give it words. Alice Hoffman captured a feeling, something unrepeatable.  I find myself thinking about certain aspects of the book during random times of the day - in the car driving, talking with a stranger, or just trying to understand my own world. Shockingly I would relive the pain that book sends you through a hundred times more just to be blessed enough to read it again.

I read this because I am a fan of Hoffman. Her poetic descriptions begin Here on Earth, causing me to slow down and feel the words. Her writing is always good, but this book made me feel like I was in two stories. One included the characters, which are richly developed. The second story I felt as if some interference came in and hi-jacked the reason for the story. The ending was rushed, for me. I am not a fan of dropping off characters, which I feel happened with (SPOILER ALERT) Gwen. The main character, March Murray, becomes secluded into a psychosis of love until she disappears. After such strong development, I would like the know something about the conclusion of March. Instead it ended with a sub-characters moment. Four stars for effort, great writing and gripping story of love-confusion.
