This book made me question a lot of things - firstly, about why it is so hyped, and secondly, what are others seeing that I am missing out? I genuinely had to ask some of my friends what they thought of the book, because I saw so many high-rated reviews for it (not from my friends but others I follow on GR) and I mostly got 'eh I didn't like it much either' kind of answers. Maybe it was the time in which it released - the era of dystopias, but this is more like a romance set in a dystopic world than a true dystopia. Honestly, this book takes the love triangle to a cringe-worthy level, and WAIT I KNOW YOU MAY HAVE LOVED THIS BOOK BUT I GOTTA GET MY FEELINGS OUT IN A RANT before I can even continue with what I actually liked. Buckle your seat belts, darlings, because this one is going to be gif-fed up!Firstly, I gotta ask - WHY? Why the focus on the romance in a dystopia? I am not one for sticking to genre conventions - heck, I love when books subvert them and introduce some new elements. But the 'new elements' in this weren't exactly new. There's the childhood friend who is now a hottie trope. Bad boy with (probably) a heart of gold trope (We'll come to that LATER OH BOY). No, what my main problem was with this book sticking its toe out of genre boundaries, is that it does it in the name of the most irritating love triangle. AND I LIKE LOVE TRIANGLES! WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO ME?!Also, how in this messed up world where people don't have proper living conditions, is the romance the main conflict of the story? It is not even a dystopia-that-looks-like-a-utopia kind of plot that love triangles are usually featured in! The world is dying, there is a fascist government ruling over them, and the first thought of these teens is whether they can get some. (It is not my imagination - there are literally scenes where the making out just happens, due to Circumstances That Just Need to Insert a Hot Makeout Scene) The world-building is sorely lacking in this book - there is barely an explanation given for how the Reestablishment came about, how it is all co-ordinated, how the resistance is not able to do any damage.Adam is this hero complex guy who liked Juliette when she was younger because she acted soooo good, lay down while other kids were tormenting her and stuff. He, of course, defended her and beat up the other kids, but his double standards are such that he admired her for not fighting back?! The romance with him would have been more believable if there was some actual development, but considering it is all silence glances in the start and very little conversation on her part, I'm declaring this as insta-love and a case of I-need-human-touch-STAT. I get that Juliette didn’t have anyone to touch for years, but that doesn’t mean his touch will immediately comfort her in every circumstance. It is more like an excuse to have them kissing again and again. Also his actions don't make much sense in the context of what he does have to lose from helping her - don't get me wrong, I liked that he didn't turn out to be shady or a backstabbing betrayer, but I also don't see why he would risk so much with barely a plan. And the writing doesn't help matters, really. Sure, there is the fact that this is narrated as Juliet's thoughts, so we get a very close understanding of what she is going through, and some crossed out sections where we see her replacing what she wants to say with what she actually says. But why did there have to be so many METAPHORS?! I get that Juliet loved books a lot, but I have read like over 2000 books in my life, and I don't talk inside my head like everything is inexplicable without a weird metaphor attached to it. It gets too much at time, like body creaking like a staircase? Also, another weird quirk is sometimes numbers are used instead of the words for numbers, which kinda ruins the flow in a sentence. And this may be minor, but why the heck is Juliette gasping so much? This girl is made up of being surprised all the freaking time.Adam lifts her up? Gasp! Castle agrees with her on something? Gasp! Warner being his usual terrible self? Gasp! Adam kisses her? You guessed it right - Gasp! (Actually the last one can be forgiven but I'm not in the mood)And let's move on to the other part of the triangle -Warner - by the way, does it count as love triangle if one guy is just being plain obsessed with her even when she is like 'eww no dude get away from me'? He literally thinks she is like him, and they have a CONNECTION and she just HAS TO BE AT HIS SIDE as he rules over his corner of the world.Dude, why are you so dense? He constantly invades her personal space and treats her like a possession than a human being capable with her own agency. How is he even a love interest? Also, this book had his short story attached, to which I am only going to say: nah, doesn't excuse what you did, you ass. He knows Juliette was psychologically tortured, and his idea to make her better is to psychologically torture her more? How is he even justifying torturing her considering what he himself went through? Finally, let's get to the parts that I did like - I liked the getting into Juliette's head way of narrating this book. She is a character kept in the dark (literally and metaphorically) so she sort of reveals the terrible world as she goes through the book. She also shows resourcefulness, and a hint of grey morality when it comes to getting things done (still, stay away from her, Warner!). But what I really liked was in the second half, when we get to meet the X-Men other people like her. I mean, she is basically a stand-in for Rogue, and there's this secret underground bunker where other mutantspowered people live, so I was excited about that, and what that would mean for this story. But it does arrive like pretty later in the story, so my enjoyment of that was already affected by my irritation with the love triangle.Overall, this is a book that I wanted to love, majorly because I love books about powered people but the focus and main storyline of the book had me disappointed in it.

I bought this book to see what all the fuss was about; I wish I had not wasted my money. First of all, the authors style of writing is horrible. I understand some people found it new and unique, but for me it was annoying. The constant strike-outs throughout the book caused a hindrance, because I had to pause and try to read what was under the strike. They really provide nothing for the story. Also, the author has a way of repeating herself "his eyes so blue so blue so blue so blue so blue". I found myself begging her to pick up a thesaurus. There are better ways to describe things then repeating the same word six times. She does this every other page and does NOT use commons or other proper punctuation. I understand this is her writing style, but I did not care for it.I would not recommend this book for anyone over the age of twelve, yet at the same time "shit" is used frequently throughout the book and I'm not sure that's appropriate for a younger reader. The MC is another copy of a do-gooder heroine with incredible power and yet she cowers in the corner,"I don't want to hurt anyone boo hoo" instead of being the badass she could be. I'm tired of these Bella Swan characters who let people walk all over them. She lacks depth and by half way through the book I was so sick of her repetitive whining I wasn't sure I would be able to finish it.The love interest, Adam, declares instalove. The author tires to give them a backstory; that they knew each other as children, but never interacted and never had a conversation. So, when they meet years later and STILL never have a conversation (they just stare at each other) I was left thinking WTF when they are suddenly in love. There is no reason to root for them, because they have no foundation to fight for.Descriptions of basically everything is lacking, replaced by "I am not insane. I am not insane. I am not insane. I am not insane. I am not insane"This novels only saving grace is the antagonist, Warner. He is the only well developed character in the entire book. It is a shame the author did not put the same effort into the rest of her characters and world creation as she did the bad guy. This book was painful to get through and in the end I found myself skimming just to finish it. I will not be reading the rest of the series.

I had seen this around a lot and a lot of people had recommended it, but it wasn't really high on my TBR list, and I just kept putting if off. But I eventually gave in. This was not what I was expecting at all. There is an interesting writing style, sort of contradictory I guess is the best way to describe it, when the story starts the main character has spent almost a year in an insane asylum, so she questions everything, including her own motivations, and this certainly makes it unique. I thought it would focus a lot more on the world building of the dystopian aspects like most first books in a series do, but instead it focuses much more on the characters, and in particular how the main character discovers what has happened and what it takes to live in this world. We discover things as she does, and I thought that was done very well. The plot is solid, with a steady pacing, and I loved every second of it. The ending was amazing and possibly the best part of the book, there's no cliffhanger at the end, but by the end I was so invested, I didn't need one to want to read the next book so bad. I enjoyed this so much more than I thought I would, it's just a great read, definitely unique and different from other dystopians, and I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

I got this book, yesterday, when it came out. I sat down to read it, during work, and found it hard to put down, even though I knew it would all come out right in the end. What is the point of a story where we know the ending? Because the journey is the reward, not the destination.Do you read stories to find out the ending? If so, then you will be disappointed with this book, because this comes out two years after the birth of Pal, so not only do we know he was born, we also know that Lucy succeeded in getting pregnant. With this book, Lucy has given us the background, how she wanted to be a mother, and how society treats both those who want to be mothers, as well as those that are mothers. Society has done so much less research on the woman's body that many things that we think that the medical field should know, they don't.But this does not tell you why this is such a fantastic book. This is so well done, because this is Lucy's journey to motherhood, with all the humor, and real life slice of life that she has exhibited in all her other work, and does to this day. This is the story of how Lucy does become pregnant, and all the observations about how life is in that state. It is a story that so many mothers, who gave birth, know so well. And yet each story is different. If you enjoyed her books about growing up, this is about growing up. If you have enjoyed Lucy's books about food, food is mentioned. If you enjoyed her book about her marriage, this continues that story. And if you enjoy her current stories about life with Pal, then you will love finding out how he came to be.

While this was a little traumatic to read during my own 38th week of pregnancy, this was the only pregnancy book I enjoyed reading (and heck, I think it was more informative than most 'factual' books). I was constantly annoying my husband by calling him over to show him different funny moments we could both relate to and there were definitely some tears shed. I've always been a fan of Knisley and was happy to be able to be pregnancy buddies with her, even if only from the page. Looking forward to her next book!

Knisley beautifully illustrates her journey into pregnancy and shares her difficult and, at times horrific, birth story with a unique gift for humorous realism. She also includes lots of interesting tidbits about the history of human reproductive knowledge. I adore her candor and that, despite challenging circumstances, I always finish reading her memoirs feeling refreshed with a sense that all will be well in the world.

I have been a fan of Lucy's for years, but find that each book she releases is unfailing LUCY & I devour it immediately. This book was honest & lighthearted, gritty & sad, and overall just wonderful. Lucy Knisley doesn't stray away from difficult topics or emotions. Instead, she delivers her honest account of what it means to be pregnant and for the long and rocky journey many people have in doing so. I loved all the gross and strange details, the weird history of women's bodies and pregnancy myths, and the love that was woven throughout. Absolutely would recommend to anyone who likes books, comics, memoirs, real conversations about experiences, moms/dads/caregivers and the many of us that fall in between.

I have never had a child and have never wanted children. But I still enjoyed the heck out of this book. I have read other books by Lucy so when I learned about this one I ordered it. Regardless of what your feelings are about children, this is a fantastic read. Lucy tells compelling stories regardless of subject matter.

Parts of this book will be relatable to any (new) parent. She has an intense story to tell, though. I’m glad to be reading this now that I know I’m done having any more kids but will be eagerly looking forward to future books about her parenting journey.

I read this book to its completion in one sitting. This is a first Lucy Knisley book I've had the pleasure of reading, recommended by an artist I follow on social media. It was like I was reading a pregnancy story about a dear friend. And even though I cried multiple times throughout the story, it still made me feel joyous and wanting more. This book is great even if you don't want to be pregnant. I wish all pregnancy memoirs were illustrated by comic artists, especially women.

This book is a very well created knowledge that I didn’t know I needed. I recommend this book for anyone who has been pregnant, trying to, or are pregnant.

Bought for a favorite student and it was the perfect book for showing him plays and such for his favorite sport. Easy to understand.

Informative and great photos, but it's very short. I expected something my nephew could sink his teeth into, but this won't keep him busy for more than a night.

Great book for the budding football fan! My 4 year old loves to sit and listen to this book!

Good learning tool.

Bought this for a dedicated 11 year old football player and fan- I think it is written for someone younger. It was very thin and did not offer anything to him- but he has also played football for 4 years.

A+

Bought this for one of my grandsons whose playing JV football. I haven't heard if he liked it or not, so can't really say much about it.

Book was great. A lot of suspense, good character development that builds from previous book, not quite sure of the next move, with a fun budding romance. Dee Henderson does a great job of interweaving faith discussions that aren't too in your face, but thought provoking. Can't wait to read the next in the series.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE the O'Malley series. I have read them all at least 5 times a piece, (and I usually don't read books more than once). YOU MUST READ THEM IN ORDER!! Don't start with this one Book 2 if you haven't read The Negotiator. I read The Negotiator first, and read Danger In The Shadows (The prequel) probably after Book 2, so you could read the prequel first. This book The Guardian, I love the main character Marcus and Shari. If you're thinking of reading this, you don't need to read the review because you've already read The Negotiator (Book 1) and know the rest of the books are just as excellent. If you are reading this review and haven't read Book 1, read that first.

LOVED the author's willingness to write about the harder subjects within this thing called "FAITH"and God calling each of his children back to himself, reaching them right where they are Now.NOT To mention that this is done in a way you can apply for yourself, without being a "preachy" book!A Must Read for the HEA with thoughtfulness , laughter and Love for each other and for God.Thanks Dee Henderson, LOVE THE SERIES!!

As the other books by Dee Henderson this story kept me reading on and on. The story had many twists and turns, heartache and joy. Still the ending of the story seemed to come a bit too easy which is the only reason I only gave it four stars. There was suspense and my heart beet quite faster then it should have, but it ended to quickly and too easily. Lucas (an assasin hired to kill Shari) seemed to be skilled and unbeatable and also for a bad guy seemed to have a sense of honor since he didn't realy want to kill her. This is why I expected a bigger showdown, and I hope to see this in the upcoming books. I agree with a previous reviewer that the characters do seem a bit too perfect with very little flaws. I think in a good book all characters would have serveral flaws that can hinder them in their 'mission'. Still, I greatly enjoyed reading this book as it is full of suspence and has humor interspersed cleverly throughout it and of course I will be reading the rest of them as well.

Loved this book! This one takes place shortly after The Negotiator ends. We read the story of Marcus O'Malley, the big brother and "guardian" of the family. He is a Marshall and is on duty the night that a shot is taken at a federal judge. There he meets Shari, the only witness to the crime and it's his duty to keep her safe. This was a wonderful story and Lisa's is next! Way to go Dee!

Dee Henderson tackles the difficult problem of why prayers aren't always answered the way we think they should be, and the bigger issue of struggling to reconcile the concept of an all-powerful and loving God in a hurting world. She does it without handing out platitudes. Even though it is painful to vicariously experience the losses her fictional characters experience, things like murder, cancer, and heartbreak are a part of real life, and she doesn't try to shield us from them in her stories. The realism of things not always turning out totally "happily ever after" makes the difficulties her fictional characters go through much more inspirational to the reader. Dee Henderson has a knack for combining her characters' spiritual journeys with a gripping mystery full of drama and emotion. She writes fiction that rings true because it has laughter as well as sorrow, and her characters are ones which the reader can identify with. The O'Malley family of this series is a family that everyone would love to be part of, and I can't wait until the next book comes out to hear more!

This is so much more than a Christian romance. This is my sixth time reading this series and the lessons within the powerful stories haven't diminished over the years. The struggles of believing in a loving, sovereign God in the midst of pain and suffering are relevant throughout history. Here the age old questions and answers are woven into a suspenseful love story full of intense characters that you just can't help but wish they were real.

This book is part of a series I stumbled onto about a group of 7 orphans who banded together to form a family, the O'Malleys. This is an excellent book, even if you don't read the series, but you will! It is fast paced, uplifting Christian fiction with action, amazing amazing characterizations, romance and even theology. My husband is reading this book, #2 in the series plus there is a prequil, and really enjoying it. This is about the head of the O'Malley family, oldest brother and federal marshal Marcus. Its a pleasure to read a series that has characters with very human failings but high moral standards and a rock solid commitment to each other. Outstanding!

Soldier's Heart: Being the Story of the Enlistment and Due Service of the Boy Charley Goddard in the First Minnesota Volunteers, by Gary Paulsen

Amazon.com Review

In spare, almost biblical prose, Gary Paulsen writes of the horrors of combat in a Civil War novella that puts a powerful, more contemporary spin on Stephen Crane's classic The Red Badge of Courage. Based on the life of a real boy, it tells the story of Charley Goddard, who lies his way into the Union Army at the age of 15. Charley has never been anyplace beyond Winona, Minnesota, and thinks war would be a great adventure. And it is--at first--as his regiment marches off through cheering crowds and pretty, flag-waving girls. But then comes the battle. Charley screams, "Make it stop now!" disbelieving that anything so horrible could be real. Paulsen is unsparing in the details of what actually happens on the battlefield: the living men suddenly blown into pieces, the agony and fear, the noise and terror, the stinking corpses. After many battles, Charley is wounded and sent home an old man before he is 20, his will to live destroyed by combat fatigue--leaving him with a "soldier's heart." Paulsen has received the Margaret A. Edwards Award, the ALAN Award, and several Newbery Honor awards for previous work, but this superb, small masterpiece transcends any of his earlier titles in its remarkable, memorable intensity and power. (Ages 12 to 15) --Patty Campbell

Soldier's Heart, by the award-winning author Gary Paulsen, focuses on Charlie Goddard’s enlistment in The First Minnesota Volunteers. The young boy enlists in hopes of becoming a man and supporting his family, unlike his nonexistent father. All through the novel, Paulson expresses the competition of the battlefield along with the symbol of hope. Along the way, Charlie quickly learns that to support his family, he has to survive the circumstances. Paulson’s descriptive writing truly shows the deaths portrayed and how surviving on nothing but stale bread could bring the soldiers together.Paulson has researched for the novel very well and gives a great understanding of how life was. This book is very educational although very repetitive. In each chapter, there is a new battle. In just a few Paulson proclaims which food they had eaten and how wounds would heal. Most actions explained in the novel were relevant but a few not. Paulson directs attention to Charlie’s very first battle, The Battle of Bull Run. Also to his last, the Battle at Gettysburg.Implying that every soldier should have a soldiers heart also known as Hyperventilation syndrome or a form of PTSD. By the end of the story, Charlie has a Soldier's Heart, which may not seem honorable but it reminds him of the past he lived. Only dying at the young age of twenty - three, Paulson explains the true fate of Charlie Goddard during the nightmare called the Civil War.Paulson makes an almost clear image of how the entire war affected Charlie with an injury lasting a lifetime after being shot in the leg. As Charlie or Paulsen described it the killing was more like butchery, slaughtering every soldier one by one. Since Charlie was so young, he never learned to shave or anything about women from war. These cons go to show the realities of the ages enlisted. The recommended age is young adult or middle to highschool, in fact this novel is a true story about Charlie. The book gets a 3.5/5 because it could be monotonous at times and not engaging, although educational. Paulson has an interesting point of view on Charlie, as he adventures to which could be his victory or his deadend.

A Soldiers Heart is a book that I would recommend to other readers not only because of the great details that Gary Paulsen put into it, but because you relive the Civil War. I liked this book because it's about a boy that is 15 years old, Charley Gaddard. He lied about his age and joined the Minnesota Volunteers. Gary Pualsen is a wonderful writer, and Soldiers Heart is one of his best novels. The gore is not all that great, but you get used to it. This is a great book to read if you are learning about the Civil War. Charley was pretty brave for going into the Civil War at the age of 15. What a big task.

My 7 year old grandson and I read the book together. He wants to be a Marine when he grows up and this gave him a good opportunity to see how it used to be to go to war.

This book came right on time in great condition. I would recommend reading it, however, it is very traumatic.

My son had to read this book for school and told me how he enjoyed it.I enjoyed it too as the author takes the reader on a journey about a fictionalization of the teen who enlists in the Union Army during the Civil War.The teen is involved in battles at Gettysburg, PA and Bull Run at Manasas, VA.The story is based on the reality of the civil war but with fictional characters.

Great guided reading book for fourth grade!

Chose this to do a book report on for a college history class, and was pleasantly surprised! While many parts of the book aren't pleasant to think about, I found myself not being able to put it down...I read it all in one sitting! It's a fairly easy read but intensely good.Maybe I liked this so much because I come from a family of Veterans (incl. my husband), but I'd definitely recommend this book!

Just the book my son needed to study for school.
