A scholarly undertaking but accessible for mass consumption. Although this book is academic, there is enough lay appeal for the every person reader. She posits "This book argues that the institution of policing operates as a complex, sophisticated system focused on keeping the threatening elements of society-people of African descent-in a constant state of harassment and tension so that Blackness cannot pollute the morals of mainstream society."The institution of policing acts in concert with the penal system and barriers to society reentry to create "social instruments for containing bodies associated with moral pollution." She has examined writings from as far back as the thirteenth century. Indeed, "Since the thirteenth century, constructions of race and constructions of morality have been explicitly linked, leading to assertions that white people were ordained for leadership and Black people for servitude."With an abundance of notes, that speaks to a well researched text, she pulls from not only sociology, but philosophy, political science and even theology writings. The idea that Black people represented moral pollution can be traced back to years before our arrival on these shores. "The earliest constructions of Black people as physically ugly, spirituality degenerate, and racially inferior emerged in the religious thought of Spanish and Portuguese explorers as well as later Enlightenment thinkers."Ms. Vesely-Flad offers irrefutable and indisputable truth to how African people were framed in the minds of the white majority and how that assessment has damaged the lives of African Americans in this country and has impacted the policing and incarceration of Black bodies driven by irrational fear. This is a book of learning and readers will be guided by the capable scholar and teacher Ms. Vesely-Flad. She makes it clear to see how the construction and character of Black bodies lead to penal and policing policy that acts upon these moral polluted souls. This is a book that connects the dots for those asking, how did this situation come about? She has done obviously painstaking research that give clarity and historical grounding to her argument. So, what can ultimately be done to reconstruct the image of the Black body as polluted. The acts of protest highlighted by #Blacklivesmatter and the anti-stop and frisk movement are examples of ways to reclaim the purity of Black lives and bodies. The continued mass demonstrations and social media protestations must be continued and ultimately institutionalized to make the reconstruction complete. A book not just for scholars or students, but for any reader who is concerned about the society as it is presently constructed. Thanks to Edelweiss and Fortress Press for an advanced ebook. The book is available now.
