Review

Praise for The Music Lesson“Victor Wooten has been doing things on the bass that nobody dreamed of, and we bass players can't help but hunger for some insight into what inspires him and how he does it. Here, as in his music, he surprises us and gives us more depth than we expected, more of himself than many would dare. This is his journey, his mystical quest, not merely to play the bass but to fully encounter and understand Music itself.”—Tony Levin, World Class Bassist with the Peter Gabriel Band“A MUST-READ FOR ANY MUSIC ENTHUSIAST.”—Chuck Rainey, World Class Bassist and Recording Artist“THE MUSIC LESSON IS A REVELATION.”—Chris Jisi, Senior Contributing Editor, Bass Player magazine“BOTH ENTERTAINING AND ENLIGHTENING.”—Guitarnoise.com

I purchased the book because it seemed to incorporate information that was very "kisemt"ly aligned with my life. First, I began playing bass a few weeks prior. Following that I attended my second Wooten show. Mixing these two items with the fact that I enjoy spiritual journey literary adventures, stumbling along this piece of work seemed to scream at me to buy it. I am glad I did! Is Victor's writing extraordinary? No. Not in the least. But be that as it may, he does a fine job of clearly telling a story and outlining concepts that he views important in personal growth, musical growth, and the inter-weaving of the two. Fun, quick read. It's like if Bob Weir decided to re-write Siddhartha but peppered in how he sees the connection of his personal ideals to his guitar playing. I think it is important for me to note that I see similarities in my ongoing self evaluation and many other aspects of my life, however musical growth is an interesting item to use to define this though. Music involves something deeply spiritual as well as a basic set of "rules" that define it in a systematic way, so it is almost the perfect "ying-yang" device. Good stuff. I would recommend. While there are a lot of concepts in such a short book, I listed a couple of the major concrete take-aways that I will keep glancing back at in direct reference to my playing. There are no "wrong" notes. Only some notes that sound good and others that are played on the way to the good sounding ones.Close your eyes more!Think of how many days you have been alive.

Regardless of what instrument you play, Victor has a great take on how to learn music and touches upon things that are often forgotten. At times it gets a little bit crunchy-granola, especially if like me, you like things to be evidence based but, if in the course of reading it you get that feeling, just wait until the end before you pass judgement. It really is a wonderful book. Also, I HIGHLY recommend the audio version of this book over the print version (I have the audio version, and the Kindle version). The print/Kindle versions are great, but the audio version communicates things in a way that I think get missed in the print version, especially when certain accents or cadences in talking are involved.

Oh, musicians, you'll love this one. It's just so full of life and wisdom. My musician friends were calling him the Carlos Castenada of Music, fondly. Bass Player extraordinarie Victor Wooten has much to share on the fluid grace of playing any instrument, since it's a core teaching, a feeling, a groove, with some rational tips as well, and a gliding story that's almost musical in itself.Highly recommended for Musicians or as a gift to musicians

I did a web search for guitar inspiration books, and found this book on a couple of the pages that my search returned. I wasn't looking for another music theory or technique book, but something to help bridge the gaps between the professional courses that i've taken, the dozens of books that I've already read and practiced through, and onto actually making music. Everything that I was looking for was covered in this book at some point, so no complaints there. I definitely recommend reading this book, and I can't recommend enough getting the Kindle plus audiobook version. The audiobook was free when I bought the Kindle version, and I actually don't think that I would have finished the book without it. It is written in this conversational style, and at various points, it drifts off into anti-religious, hippie, numerology La-la-land. Enough that it would have driven me nuts trying to figure out what just happened in the past 4-5 pages. Ironically enough, challenges to focusing, concentrating, and "not concentrating" are major subjects in the book. All of these quirks, interestingly enough, will probably be the character that makes this book a musician's classic for years to come. It got a little creepy to me at points, actually reminding me of the Robert Johnson Crossroads folklore!

Allow me to suggest Michael Singer’s The Surrender Experiment as complementary reading to The Music Lesson, although it was only while reading the last two chapters of TML that its strong underlying connection with TSE became apparent. That said, I’m sure there are many other great works out there that carry the same message: you already know all you need to know.TML was a great read. I became very endeared to its characters, but especially to uncle Clyde. Thank you, Victor Wooten, for sharing this ray of light. Very much looking forward to the sequel to TML, which I hear is in the works.

Victor Wooten did an excellent job on this book I don't know if he had help or not but he expresses his self very well and his journey and path through his bass playing and music in general. It is a very engaging book with the mysterious character that is his mentor and guide. He pulls you into the story so that you want to read the whole book in one setting. Which I didn't do because I just don't have the time but I am enjoying reading it as I get time.

Transmits -- not just teaches -- really wonderful stuff about music. New Age-y writing style might be hard for some to take, but totally worth it. I'm a better musician after each chapter -- weird, awesome.

It’s a weird story with good wisdom in it. I really enjoyed the thought that we learn to talk by jamming with experts and not by going to talking lessons. And the part about zero and rests. It is a bit deep at times so I am sure I missed some really good wisdom that I just didn’t catch. Worth a read if you a musician
