About the Author

Born in London in 1963, Mark Ovenden evinced an early fascination with trains and TV that has remained with him over the course of his life. Following college he pursued a number of positions in local government and on the radio promoting progressive attitudes towards gay issues before getting a full time job at BBC Radio 1 as a producer. In 1998 he joined MTV as a freelance Music Programmer, where he gave birth to another production company which went on to produce shows for Atlantic252. There Mark was later taken on as a presenter of a weekly record review show with Chris Coco and as their specialist programmes producer and later breakfast newsreader. When Atlantic252 closed down Mark moved to Ministry Of Sound where he helped set up their DAB station, Ibiza unit and later, as Head of Radio there, ran a popular FM version of the station. Mark moved into consultancy after this working with Purple radio and the DRG. In 2002 while still working in his spare time on his book project he moved to a fledgling TV channel as Channel Manager. Mark Ovenden's Metro Maps of the World was published in November 2003 to great critical acclaim. It has since been re-written and updated for the American market and is now published by Penguin as Transit Maps of the World. Mark currently resides in Paris where he is researching his next book on a century of cartography of the Paris Metro Map. He is also working on several other book projects, a radio sit-com, and a TV travel show.

Mark Ovenden has created his own niche in the world of publishing at the intersection of cartography and railways. His books to date have been encyclopedic in scope and content - easy to get lost in and in which to find arcane information. There are many very expensive books on railways in French that fail to reach the level of consistent interest and comprehensiveness of Mr. Ovenden's effortsThis book is the latest in the series and will probably be the last as it has been rapidly remainder and has become a perfect symbol of more is less. This book could be an ideal example of what not to do in the communication field - maybe a volume to accompany the excellent work of Edward Tufts?The scope of this book and its organization are outstanding - the problem is that the reproduction is poor in both design and execution. The majority of the maps are so small as to be unreadable - depriving the reader of the vicarious pleasure of reading the maps in detail and letting their imagination run wild. Some are little bigger than postage stamps and as such useless. An additional problem is the color reproduction - are the original sources poorly rendered or is much of the book printed out of register? Difficult to decide but one does come away with the image of the book as being predominately a muddy brown.As I bought the book as a remainder - it's okay - for $35 I would have a major issue.

I have already purchased Mr. Ovenden's two previous titles, as I really love maps. I thought what he did in the "Transit Maps of the World" was brilliant, and I really like what he has done in "Railway Maps of the World". The book is again split into the development/ historical part and a gazetteer of all the places in the world that have railway networks. Just looking at the cover, with an image from the mythical Orient-Express, made me want more. It is fascinating to see how we have chosen to illustrate railways, ranging from the very traditional cartographic maps, to beautiful, almost three dimensional images. It is the kind of book that makes you yearn to set off on a train journey to see places near and far. It makes me regret the almost clinical nature of a flight, compared with a train journey. Looking at how extensive the railways were once in the USA, or Argentina or Ireland, for example, makes you realise how much potential we have lost. The map's of LA railways is a very telling one. Then to compare it with the ways the maps of China are filling out with railways, makes you really think about choices being made.I really like the contrasting styles of maps, for example the juxtaposition of the images of a French board game from the 1920s depicting the railway lines of France and western Europe next to the ultra modern rail team map of the same area. The beautiful holiday posters that mixed maps and advertising are so evocative of another age that you can only get nostalgic.I only regret that some of the maps are not bigger, despite the fact many maps fill an entire page, as the problem of shrinking an entire wall-sized poster down into a book means that on some examples you cannot quite see all the lush detail you might like and also with such a subject this book could easily be twice the size without you getting board.The great thing about this book is you can read it from cover to cover, or just dip in and out. It is a book you would come back to. It is one of those books you keep on your shelf and take out from time to time, just because you feel like a browse, or you are thinking of going on a train trip somewhere, or just feel like dreaming of a more train friendly era.I would not hesitate recommending this as a great gift or self-purchase for anyone interested in railways or mapping, or just anyone who loves to dream of travelling.

This book contains, I'm sure, excellent maps - if I had been able to see them. Some appeared to be reduced from large postersize to postcard size, losing all the details that would be necessary for their enjoyment. This should have been released asa "coffee table" book.

The book is quite well written and fairly well illustrated. The historic maps are of interest but the only disappointment is that many of the maps have a small print size, and therefore are difficult to read. The book arrived in good clean condition, as all of the books that I have obtained from Amazon, have been. Also, fast delivery.

Great collection of maps, although many are a little too small for actual reading (even with glasses). Leave it out for friends to look through - everybody I know finds this book interesting (we're all travelers who like using trains!)

The typeface used is too small to read easily. The map reproductions are also too small. I would have rather seen less maps that were readable.

I bought this book not having a clear idea of what to expect, as I don't own any of Mark Ovenden's previous works.First of all the format is perfect, slightly rectangular, large enough to feel plush yet not oversized.The overall design is beautiful and crisp, contemporary yet with an attractive and appropriate touch of old-fashion style, which is reflected in the mat cover.I found the contents of the book very interesting. There's a lot more information than one would expect. It's fascinating to follow the development of railways throughout the continents and time, while observing the changes in design of the maps.Mark Ovenden manages to combine in a brilliant way the historical part and the graphic part in an uncommonly attractive and romantic approach.The size of some of the maps would have deserve a larger size, as they sometimes feel crammed in one page. In spite of that I love this book. Whether you just browse through it and stop on a random page, or you read it from beginning to end, it's a relaxing and enchanting book.I can only strongly recommend this addition to one's library.

 I found out that this book is rather controversial after reading all the comments left by other readers on Amazon, most are disgusted by the historical inaccuracies and personal agenda of the authors. Even I have to agree to a certain extent. At the end of the book, you'll get the impression that Norman Rockwell, Leyendecker's competition, is nothing but vile. One reader even pointed out a knock-off painting that was mistaken as an original Leyendecker work. These are only two examples.In short, you should get this book for the art and not the text.Leyendecker's paintings is easily identifiable by the exaggerated, quick brushstroke effect, or crosshatched strokes with oil paint. The reason why I bought the book was to check out how he draws the folds on those clothes. His command of drawing clothes and drapery is masterly. His more iconic pieces would be the Arrow Collar Man, New Year babies, and the covers for Saturday Evening Post.Plenty of cover art he did for magazines are also included, although it's small at 9 per page. I thought the scans and reproduction of the paintings are pretty good. Yes, there might be yellow stains on those old copies of Saturday Evening Post but note that these paintings are from before the 1950s. The large illustrations are reproduced well, showing the texture of the medium. I like that his portraits are full of form and solidity, which I understand are drawn with models as reference.The included biography is controversial but I didn't really buy this book for the text.All said, it's still a very decent archive of Leyendecker's work.The art is good enough to warrant a 5-star rating, regardless of what is written.(More pictures are available on my blog. My artist friend let me borrow his copy to trace and draw in and I eventually became so obsessed and attached to this book I just had to break down and buy my own copy. It arrived to me Sunday along with Robert McGinnis both of which were perfectly cellophane danders super clean. Leyendecker’s knowledge of anatomy, shapes and painting is just too uncanny if I had to compare I’d say he proceeded Norman Rockwell and may have even taught him. My artist friend told me this copy here is the most complete and he was not kidding. Wouldn’t necessarily call JC a tortured artist solely on the fact that he was gay and had to hide it from the world til the day he died. The author really did his research on JC as there were and still aren’t very many documents on Leyendecker. A master

As much as I love Leyendecker's art and talent, the writers of this book come to table with a load of baggage and prejudices. If you just want to look at the images, fine, but if you want content, try a more well rounded author.

I ordered this book because I have a calling card of J.C. Leyendecker's, with a few of his doodles on the back of it. I picked it up when my aunt took me to his studio in New Rochelle, which she rented after his death. I always remember Leyendecker as the "Arrow shirt man", from his ads. The book is a beautiful book, with dozens of pictures of his paintings. It will be so nice to know, now, how he, along with Norman Rockwell, portrayed America through the decades. In ending, I was also very surprised to find my aunt, Molly Guion, spoken of in the book. I wish I had been more attuned to the fame in this man's life, but as a 10 year old, who would? A great buy, especially if you love art portraying America. I wish I could get one of his paintings, but I guess that would be impossible, as they are apparently, so rare.

If you're an artist ...this is my highest rec in regards to studying drapery . Leyendecker is a master of drawing the negative space/shape a fold makes , not the actual fold...best believable hand drawn/painted/stylized drapery you'll ever see.

Fine book on an absolute master. Lavishly illustrated, the larger color plates allow for appreciation of the artist's magnificent draftsmanship and brush work. Well represented is Leyendecker's creation of an almost ridiculously handsome ideal -- even Cary Grant never looked THAT good -- predating Ralph Lauren by two generations. All his major covers are here -- if mostly in miniature -- along with his famous shirt ads. Plus, the author did not shy away from exploring Leyendecker's shadowy personal life, oh so different from the easy, suave, clubby world he depicted.

For illustrators and artists of all types, this book will please, showcasing as it does the impressive breadth and depth of Leyendecker's exceptional talent and skill. I bought the book for a different reason, however. I am always searching for images of well-dressed men to serve as a balance and antidote to the current era's preference for ugly,undignified, ill-fitting and guttersnipe "anti-syle". Leyendecker's wondrous images of beautiful men and women dressed in gorgeous perfectly-tailored clothes did the trick for me!! Nothing better.MOstly color photo's. Some B/W.

Norman Rockwell is a household name to many Americans, and just as many non-US born enthusiasts, but as those very same Americans who J.C Leyendecker is and they'll likely draw a blank.He's in my opinion just as big a perpetuator of the American ideal as Rockwell ever was and this book is such a great collection of his art. A fan of either should not miss out on this.I really hate "art books" that when you flip through their pages, they have more words than images. Quite happily this is not one of those. Words are unavoidable as I'm sure those not familiar with the artist will probably want to know just a little about them, but ultimately I think most people pick up these books for the art. This book has that in spades. Even the table of contents and bibliographies are lined with his art. Love, love, love this book.

Beautiful collection of one of America's greatest early 20th-century illustrators. The reproductions, the paper, and the binding are high quality. Great reference work with stunning images of the beauty of the American male between 1910-1930.

This is by far the best cruise book out there. The detail it gives about the ships and ports is very helpful. It also gives you other valuable info. before you book and take the cruise. I was very impressed. It is ten times better then the Berlitz book (which I think is very poor). I would suggest this book to anyone getting ready to take a cruise to the Caribbean!

To much reading for me. Basically an encyclopedia of information on cruises... information overload for just one trip!

C.H. (Remco) van Rhee is Professor of Comparative Civil Procedure and European Legal History at Maastricht University (Netherlands) and director of the program “Foundations and Principles of Civil Procedure in Europe” of the Ius Commune Research School. He studied law at the universities of Leiden and Edinburgh, History at the university of Leuven and Psychology at the university of Leiden. He defended his PhD thesis on early-modern civil procedure at the university of Leiden, where he received his doctorate in 1997. His PhD thesis was awarded the prix d’excellence of the Praemium Erasmianum Foundation in 1997. Van Rhee taught Roman Law at the University of Leiden (1991-1994) and Property and Civil Procedure at the University of Utrecht (1994-1998) before being appointed at Maastricht University. He served, amongst other things, as head of department, member of the science committee of the law faculty of Maastricht University, academic director of the Maastricht University European Law School Master program and chairman of the Education Board of the Maastricht University European Law School. He held visiting positions at various universities in Europe, the Americas, Asia and Africa. He is a member of the several editorial boards: “The Legal History Review”; “Pro Memorie: Bijdragen tot de Rechtsgeschiedenis der Nederlanden” (“Dutch Legal History Journal”) and “Tijdschrift voor Civiele Rechtspleging” (“Dutch Civil Procedure Journal”). If, like me, you are already pretty well on the way to realizing that we've been lied to and are being lied to about pretty much every thing we've been told, for years, this is the book which will finally open your eyes. The clouds will part as you read the story of this remarkable, dedicated, humble and brilliant man - how he discovered that an entire group of young patients (he is a pediatric gastroenterologist) had developed symptoms of Crohn's disease - very unusual in very young children; so rare as to be virtually unknown - had all developed their symptoms within HOURS of receiving the mmr vaccine (this is not an anti-vaccine book, but a warning against administering "polyvalent" or multiple/combined vaccines to very young children with immature immune systems). What happened to him when he innocently wrote a paper linking the vaccine with Crohn's/autism (almost always linked in young children) will show you where we are.

Andy Wakefield was railroaded. This book sets him free. Well documented, properly cited, and filled with facts that were not made available to the public that exonerate Wakefeild from any wrong doing.You need to read this book. However, a few points:1) it is very, very detailed. At times it might bore the casual reader, and level of writing is well above average.2) If you are not from the UK, at times the UK style English could be confusing. It takes a few chapters to get used to it.3) There is a short chapter in the very beginning that introduces the book, and it seems out of place.You will get a ton of benefit from reading this book, and I find it very "telling" that the book is not available to be sold in the UK. That should tell you all you need to know about this situation.

It would be easy to denounce this book as nonsense purely because of who wrote it, but only if:1. You have never actually read the original Lancet paper.2. You haven't actually read this book either.On the other hand, if you have read the original paper (which is short and still available online) and seen how often and badly it is misquoted, then it's a fascinating and detailed account of the hatchet job that was done on a doctor who, one day, will be widely honored for the hero he is: in spite of losing his medical licence in the UK and having his reputation torn to shreds, he still fights day in and day out for the health and safety of children everywhere.I see some reviews state that he is "rewriting history", but the massive number of citations and references would seem to make this unlikely - and if the book were full of falsehoods, I'm pretty sure he would have been sued by now.It's time more people, especially parents, started to investigate vaccines by themselves (without relying on what the news media tells them), because it's a deep, dark rabbit hole, and this book is as good a place as any to start digging, as is the excellent book, "Dissolving Illusions".

Andrew Wakefield is a hero. Someone who has done the right thing against a tsunami of pressure. Very few people in this world I respect more.
