There are several historical mystery series available that have a touch of romance on the side. Some years back we had Deanna Raybourn's Lady Julia Grey series. Others still being written are Tasha Alexander's Lady Emily series, Ashley Gardner's Captain Lacey, Jane Steen's Lady Helena, Huber's Lady Darby, Penrose's Lady Arianna, Harris's Sebastian St. Cyr, and the list goes on and on. Most are set in either the Regency or Victorian period. Some are better than other.This start to a new series by Dianne Freeman doesn't add anything special or unique to the genre. The heroine is a widowed countess, one of those American heiresses whose families bought their way into the British peerage at the end of the 19th century. Men with titles but no money looked across the Pond for rich wives to maintain their lifestyle.Frances Wynn, our heroine, knew her marriage wasn't a great love story but she didn't expect her husband Reggie to be quite the horrid philanderer he turned out to be. After seven years of marriage, he dies unexpectedly and she's free to take her young daughter and move on her own to a London townhouse.But trouble follows her. Her in-laws are causing problems, someone is sending anonymous notes to the police accusing her of murdering her husband, and there's a jewel thief running around stealing from the upper class at their gatherings. So we read the book to find out if any or all of these issues are related.And the romance? Well, our heroine has a lovely friend who has a handsome bachelor brother who just happens to live next door to the townhouse rented by the heroine. He turns out to be a very helpful kind of guy. The romance is low key. There's just hinting at it and we are, I imagine, supposed to keep on reading the books of the series to see how serious the relationship will become.As for the mystery itself and the quality of the writing, it's not the worst I've read but it is very, very average. I'm not impressed by the characters and found the dialogue to be pretty run-of-the-mill. Not much sparkle to speak of. And the mystery was not developed in a way to create even a scintilla of suspense.I got this first book of the series when it was offered at a bargain price. I see that now it has gone back to its original price and the second book of the series will be coming out at that price also. I won't be buying it. Too costly for a mediocre book.

American-born Lady Harleigh is forced into sleuthing to protect her reputation and future when her husband’s death, initially ruled a heart attack, is questioned because of an anonymous letter to the police, suggesting she murdered him. With the help of her neighbor George, she must uncover the truth and not only protect herself, but her sister Lily who is in London for the season in hopes of making a match.Dead bodies, thievery, money hungry relations all tangled together in an enchanting story that's fast-paced. On a side note, as an avid romance reader, I hoped to see a budding relationship grow between Frances and George. There was a definite undercurrent when they were in the same room. This is a mystery novel that will make you smile.

I loved this book on so many levels. I have not been a huge historical mystery reader, but this book has changed my view. I fell in love with the Victorian time period, and with Frances--who is a woman with a mind of her own. Her personality and wit shines throughout. There were moments I was laughing out loud and others where the writer had me concerned about the welfare of the characters I had come to love. The mystery was so well-plotted, I didn't know until the final reveal who was guilty, and was pleased at the outcome. This is a must read for any mystery lover and I'm anxiously awaiting Frances' next adventure.

A Lady's Guide to Etiquette and Murder is a darling cozy mystery set in England at the turn of last century. Because of this book, I have started to search for more historical cozies because I love to read historical mysteries (Think Anne Perry and Elizabeth Peters). I was initially drawn in by the very clever cover with the different 'methods of murder' tucked into the curtains, but the story was fun and I was surprised by the murderer's identity, wanting to turn the page to finally find out who did the crime. The author did a great job with setting and the mores and morality of the time (1899), too. I will definitely pick up her next book.

Another author, who is a Facebook 'friend' read this book and highly recommended it. So I decided to give it a try. It was wonderfully fantastic. It takes place in England in the late 1800s. A time when wealthy Americans were marrying off their daughters to impoverished, but titled British aristocracy. One such American, whose husband has died, decides to leave her now deceased husbands family and set up her own household in London. When her mother sends her younger sister to be 'presented' during the 'season'. Her dead husband's family is trying to get her private finances for themselves. While she's fighting that fight, small items start to be stolen from other households. And the story is off to the races. A very good read.

I loved this. Historical mysteries are a favorite of mine, and this has definitely made the cut. The protagonist is a strong woman with a mind and goals of her own and doesn't waver from them. The future love interest (I strongly suspect) is equally delightful. I can't wait for book 2 to come out.

I love the title of this book!It grabbed my attention right away, and the book is just exactly what you might think from the title.Like almost every other reviewer so far, it's getting a five star rating from me.Very entertaining.

What a great way to spend a weekend! A Lady's Guide to Etiquette and Murder was exactly the book I was hoping to read next: smart, fast-paced, with a large dose of etiquette which my inner Emily Post loves. I love a mystery I can't predict from the first few pages (I didn't predict this one at all!) You definitely won't regret this purchase!

I was recently diagnosed with ulcerative colitis, and have been trying to figure out what foods I should be eating and which I should try and avoid in order to help my colon not become so irritated. I have found this book extremely helpful, not just in the recipes but also in the medical information presented in the first part. Unlike other IBD "cookbooks", this one actually gives you detailed and accurate information about different diseases, medications and treatments, and basically what it all means for those suffering with IBD. The recipes are super easy to follow with ingredients that are not exotic or difficult to find (and I live in a small town with limited grocery options). I absolutely love how each recipe has info about what you can swap ingredients for if you are flaring or trying to avoid or increase specific nutrients in your diet. I also love how this book explains why certain ingredients are used so that you know not just how to make IBD-friendly meals but also why you are using certain things to make those meals. This is a wonderful tool for anyone looking to increase their knowledge about IBD and IBD recipes.

One of the only science-based IBD cookbooks out there. Lots of modifications for each recipe depending on whether you are in remission, in a flare, or have other IBD-specific dietary needs such as malnutrition or managing a stricture. In the age of predatory alternative medicine, this book is refreshing and needed.

First book about Crohn's that was helpful to me. I wish they had more recipes or ways to prepare food when not in remission. However I found this book very will written and had a lot information that most books don't.

I have ulcerative colitis. My wife was getting frustrated in preparing different meals that I could eat. This book has helped her prepare a wide variety of meals. The only problem is many of these recipes use more spices than I used when I was well. However, they taste just fine without the spices.

This book didn't have a lot of info I hadn't already read. Some of the recipes were ok, but so many had high fodmap foods I can't eat, that it didn't serve me well.

Best book for Crohns out there.

Great information and in easy to follow format. Love the recipes as they provide low fiber alternatives.

This book, "Speak Japanese in 90 Days" was a great help for my husband and me during our trip to Osaka, Japan. The way the author has designed the language learning curve is quite efficient as the book is divided in 90 lessons that you have to read as one per day.Each daily lesson has 10 vocabulary words for you to memorize and most of those daily lessons do contain some grammar structure to memorize as well. It is recommended to write down those 10 vocabulary words on 10 separate cards, on card's front face you will write the English word and on the back side you will write the Japanese word, you must say out loud each word in English and then in Japanese, in that way you will help yourself to memorize each word. The author also recommends to repeat each word at least three times a day in order to increase the memory ability of every single word included on each lesson. After that, you can try to make sentences with the words learned in order to improve your memory ability and language structure.An explanation about the Japanese writing system and its pronunciation is also described by the author.In our own experience, this book helped us a lot; although, we also carried a dictionary and other language devices, but still without understanding the basics of a foreign language, there is very little you can speak. Therefore, this book gave us a much better understanding of the Japanese language and its structure so it was easier for us to deal with several important situations as getting train tickets, ask for directions, buying food, get a room and some more regular daily situations.

The author breaks every lesson down into very small sections and explains everything in a very simple, easy to understand manner. There's also a ton of vocabulary to learn in this book which is awesome. However, in every lesson there is a section with example sentences. This would be really helpful if the words used in the sentences had been words the book had already gone over. There's also a small list of vocabulary words at the end of every lesson as well but oddly enough the words used in the example sentences wouldn't be in the vocabulary list for the lesson. I found this really odd. Why didn't the author just used vocabulary that we the reader already would know? Or at least include it in the list? I found myself having to look up words using a different resource in order to get the full benefit out of these example sentences. There's also a decent amount of typo errors throughout the lessons, but that's of course not a very big deal.Overall I've found the book really helpful thus far but every now and then it'll randomly refer to a subject that hasn't been addressed previously and not explain it. Almost as if the author just assumes that you already know, yet this book is aimed for complete beginners. This isn't a huge deal. I'd just look up whatever it is the book randomly brought up. But for a book marketed towards a beginner it seems to every now and then assume you know something without having explained it prior.But as a whole it was really useful and I love the amount of vocabulary it has in it. Next to all of the vocabulary and sentences is the romaji, kanji, and hiragana/katakana versions. This is really helpful for beginners however the romaji can be distracting when you are wanting to try and only look at the Japanese characters. Regardless the author explains everything in an easy to understand manner and its nice that the lessons are broken down into such small pieces. Ideal for someone who can only study for small periods of time everyday. A nice book to have for a beginner.

It's a great book. The format it is made helps a lot to practice everything: hiragana, katakana, and kanji. Japanese isn't an easy language for English speakers. It will require serious commitment with yourself. The book has a large amount of basic vocabulary, has a lot of examples where you can use the words you just learnt, and whenever there's a grammar rule or something that you must know the author will explain it, which is really nice.In general is a complete book, well organized. If you are like me and you just want to know a medium-basic level so you can talk to Japanese people this book is good, however, it doesn't matter how good a book can be, it's up to you to practice everyday so you actually are doing some progress.

I was very skeptical when i saw this book but the price was nice so i gave it a try and boy am i glad i did!! Its every simple and theres not beating around the bush. Read one chapter a day, use what you habe learned that day all day, then repeat the next day while add in yesterdays learn in. Thats it! By doing this, you are moving what you read from short temr memory to long quickly and you remember better. The book doesnt give you to much at once either. Its about 10 words or so and 10 phases a day. I never felt overwhelmed and if i forgot, i can just flip back to that chapter and work on that word.Believe me, it works! I took 2 years of japanese, and this is book is teaching me faster and better than the class. BUT, you have to use it! Like they said in the book " the more you use it (the language), the better you become"

Love how this book is broken up into daily lessons. It is easy to follow and keeps you on track and motivated! If you want to speak, read, and write Japanese, get this book! I also bought the flashcards which are very helpful, I have them on my smartphone and use them at home and on the go!

This book is like a japanese tutorial written by a really really intellgent and insightful japanese tutor who could not be bothered to format the material properly. On paper, it looks like a first draft written in microsoft word. Tables, for example, are not even formatted as tables but are just smeared across the page in haphazard columns in some cases.But, once you get beyond that, the reason I come back to this regularly is that it's written very intelligently and is intended for the, if i can be so forward, smart student. the insights are really spectacular. i go back to japan about every other year and need to brush up on my spoken japanese. this book does it. recommended!

About the Author

Edward T. Howley, PhD, FACSM, FNAK, earned his bachelor’s degree from Manhattan College and his master’s and doctorate degrees from the University of Wisconsin at Madison. He then completed a one-year postdoctoral appointment at Penn State University and was hired in 1970 as a faculty member at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. Howley taught a variety of courses, including an undergraduate course in fitness testing and prescription and undergraduate and graduate courses in exercise physiology. He retired in 2007 and holds the rank of professor emeritus. In addition to the previous editions of this book, Dr. Howley has authored three books, four book chapters, and more than 60 research articles dealing with exercise physiology, fitness testing, and prescription. He is a fellow in the National Academy of Kinesiology and served as chair of the Science Board of the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports in 2006-2007. In 2007-08 he served on the Physical Activity Guidelines Advisory Committee that evaluated the science related to physical activity and health and generated a report for use by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to write the 2008 Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans. Most of Dr. Howley’s volunteer efforts have been with the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM). He was involved in the development of certification programs and served as president in 2002-03. He served as editor in chief of ACSM’s Health & Fitness Journal for seven years and as chair of the program planning committee for the annual ACSM Health and Fitness Summit meeting. In 2007, Howley was recognized for his professional contributions with the ACSM Citation Award. In his leisure time, he likes to golf, ride his bike, travel, and play with his grandchildren. Dixie L. Thompson, PhD, FACSM, FNAK, is vice provost and dean of the graduate school at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville and is a professor in the department of kinesiology, recreation, and sports studies. The 6th edition has more information. Just completed a WITS personal training certification that required this 7th edition. A classmate had the 6th edition and the appendix had more useful info in it. The page numbers from the 7th to the 6th edition only varied by 2 or 3 pages. I would rather have the 6th edition.

Worst book I've ever read. Constantly gives contradicting information to the point you can't trust anything it says. Also makes statement about high vitamin E intake causing strokes based off 1 study that only had 50,000 people in it. There were almost the SAME amount of people had strokes taking vit E as the people that took a placebo. The author didn't put much effort into researching facts. One chapter tells you to use certain #'s for sedentary people to find their calories needed for day, then uses low activity #s instead in the case study.

Must have a basic phys. background to understand quite a bit of the language. It is a great text if you already are familiar with Ex. Phys.

My husband will be using the book for class and will us it later when he will need to look up stuff when he needs it.

I bought it to get certified as Personal Trainer, great book! Lot of information, well explained, a lot of external tools to make the learning expierence easier

I got the edition of 1996, knowing it wasn't going to be up to date with the things I could buy in the stores in 2012. I hoped she was going to explain to me why should I prefer this or avoid that always from the point of view that we are not all the same and what causes a terrible allergic reaction to somebody, could be my best cosmetic friend (in the same way that I have a friend alergic to fish, but that doesn't make fish bad for me). Instead I found something like a religion: "do it because I said so".The deal breaker was when reviewing makeup, she used her tastes and prejudices about colors to evaluate products: I can't trust she's not doing the same when it's not a matter of taste, for example when discussing potentially dangerous ingredients. Most of the public talk about cosmetics is not based on facts, but beliefs ("n women saw improvements": do people around them saw those improvements as well?): if Paula can't separate her beliefs from facts, then she's not better than the big cosmetic brands and her book is not for me.

I was disappointed. First of all, she plugs her products too much. and she's really negative about a lot of products. Now, I'm sure she has back up, but some of the products she rated very low, I've had great results with. And there are a ton of products not reviewed....like OroGold, Gratiae, and some others. It's a huge book, but it's form 2009. Obviously there are a ton of new products out there, since the business of wrinkles is a billion dollar industry. It needs updating. Her website is way too geared for her line...which I've never heard of before seeing this book. It's called Paula's Choice. Not a name I'd look into...of course all the reviews about her line are positive. It's just too slanted. I'd have more respect for her if she didn't have her own line, and wasn't trying to sell it when ever she could. it took her credibility away for me. She could be right on track -- you just don't know for sure. And, like everything, different products work better on different people.

I got Paula's 2003 edition in 2006, but was sorry that it was rather outdated and in that edition she said she wouldn't be doing another one. So I was happily surprised to find a brand new edition in Barnes & Noble, and after perusing it I plan to order it from Amazon. A few comments: Some reviewers claim Paula gives negative reviews to most product so she can push her own line. I don't agree with that. In fact, in the 2003 edition which I have, she includes descriptions of her products but decided not to even rate them. I think in the new edition she DOES rate them finally. As someone who has really been a makeup junkie, particularly with trying out skin care products, I found her descriptions and evaluations extremely useful. I have tried cheap products and very expensive ones, and have found things I loved in both categories. One thing I DO believe is that the highly expensive products cannot really justify the high price tags. My own experience has shown that more expensive is not necessarily better. And cheap isn't necessarily bad. My own favorite cleanser, discovered by accident many years ago, is Cetaphil, and Paula rates that one highly. I just ordered a bunch of Paula's own product samples, and from what I can tell from small samples, I like them a lot, particularly her concealers. None of them irritated my skin. I've had a lot of trouble with sensitivity and skin scrubs, so I'm anxious to try her AHA gels instead of using granular type scrubs. By the way, the information on her website is useful and her lectures are interesting. Paula knows a lot and she has been studying and evaluating skin care for a long time. This book represents an enormous compilation of work, and there is nothing else like it out there. You may not agree with all of her opinions (for example, although I had hoped I wouldn't like it, I really do like Creme de la Mer despite its outrageous price, and I've found it soothing to my skin when it is in a reddish, upset state. I'd like to find a cheap clone of it, but thus far have not found one). The point is, you can use her reviews as a starting place for your cosmetics purchases. The fact is, cosmetics companies really do take advantage of us all and our desire to look good. I think we'd all admit that there are some truly outrageous prices out there, and after years of trying things, I have to admit I haven't found any miracles yet. It's a full circle, and I'm back to the point of trying to find products to cleanse and moisturize without irritating my skin. Nothing fancy is really needed. One interesting thing Paula provides is information where there is huge product overlap (example: all Olay's lines, with older ones now being cheaper and the newest ones costing quite a bit more. Yet, considering their ingredients, there is no real difference between them....you just pay more for the newer ones!!). All the beauty magazines feature various products (obviously "paid" by cosmetic companies to do so), and it's nice to find out more details about what these "really" are. In short, this is a great and very useful book if you approach it with the right attitude. For products I like, it's nice to learn exactly what component of the products creates the effect I like, too.

I took beginning piano lessons as an adult for about 5 years over 15 years ago. I never had much time to practice and so never got very good. After I stopped taking lessons I would try playing piano every now and then but since I never got very good at sight reading I had a difficult time and would give up quickly. I would go months at a time without playing anything. A couple of years ago I wanted to see if I could learn Pachelbel's Canon in D, and in searching for sheet music I found out that it was the last piece in book #2 of the Alfred's adult beginner series. I bought the series and decided that I needed to start from the beginning and go through it systematically. I'm so happy I did. Piano has become fun again, and I feel like I'm really learning a lot. I practice almost every day. After not quite 2 years, I'm still only 1/2 way through book #2 because I want to play each piece solidly before moving on (and so still haven't made it to Pachelbel), but I'm having fun learning other genres of music and becoming much better at sight reading. I found a really good instructional channel on YouTube, "Lets play piano methods" that has all the pieces from the Alfred's series along with very helpful instruction for each song.

this CD I bought, each song does not match the # on the book I bought (for example, #75 on the book is actually #56 on the CD). I have been playing the guessing game for each song I am practicing. I also do not like that each song was recorded with lots of other instruments so it is so hard to try to detect the piano keys in it...A total disaster to me.But luckily, I recently found out that it is much easier to just watch Youtube, each song has multiple demo lessons (from slow to fast), it is so much easier to just use the book, and find the demo on Youtube, if you have not found out, try.Do not buy this CD...this is my advise.

This DOES NOT go with the Alfred's Basic Adult Piano Course "Adult All-In-One Course: Lesson, Theory, Technic" book (ISBN-10: 0882848186)! It goes with the book titled Alfred's Basic Adult Piano Course: "Lesson Book, Level One" (ISBN-10: 0882846167). There are two very different books titled "Alfred's Basic Adult Piano Course" but sub-titled differently!

This is the CD corresponding to Alfred's Basic Adult Piano Course Level 1. I expected a piano to be playing the music. That is, after all, the instrument we're trying to learn and the reason why we bought the Alfred book and CD in the first place. Instead, as another reviewer noted, what is presented is Muzak. If there is a piano present, it's hard to pick it out. I wouldn't say the CD is worthless, but it certainly isn't worth very much.Addendum: A surprising number of Alfred's Basic Adult Piano Course Level 1 videos can be found on Youtube.

I'm trying to learn the piece and would prefer to hear the piano performance of what I'm learning, but this is instrumentals, and its of absolutely no help to me.

I would have given this five sars if it had included instruments other than the piano. When you're learning to play a piece on the piano you dont need to hear other instruments drowning out the notes and rhythms you are trying to concentrate on. When the accompaniment is not the best it could be and its overpowering it makes it difficult to learn the piece you're working on. Even though the CD wasnt as good as I had hoped for it was better than not having anything at all. I was able to distinguish some of the examples and to play along with them despite the annoying accompanimens, so I gave it 4 stars.

The music on the disk does not really match with what the book is asking of you. Starting from the beginning, they ask you to play a melody from Ode to Joy and just the melody. On the piano. Yet on the disk it's played with multiple instruments, chords. All recorded on some horrible synthesizer. It's impossible for a beginner to understand what you're supposed to be playing and how it should sound by listening to it.In fact considering how confusing it is, it's not just useless, it makes the whole thing worse than not listening to the CD at all.

Do not buy! Some smart ass decide to mix heavy background instruments sounds along the notes you see. The worst part is that the notes weren't played in piano. It is very annoy. I was aware of it before bought it thinking that I will just use it to get the right tempo. If you are thinking the same thing, do not make the same mistake I did. Do not buy, this is not even good enough to get the tempo right since it weren't played in piano.
