This book has filled a void my husband has been feeling for a while now: the lack of research. While this is not a Christian book, it does respect and uphold the sactity of marriage. Instead of creating an entire book based on a couple bible passages, it organizes the book based on what successful couples have done to, well, be successful. The case studies are all very real and the research-based approach to what works and what doesn’t was really refreshing. Highly recommend this book!

This book applies many of the principles of making healthy relationships that Gottman and the Gottman Institute have become famous for, but specifically for new parents. It is readable and eminently practical. There are many real-life stories included as illustrations, quizzes for you and your partner to use to take stock of things, and exercises to improve your relationship.My husband and I read this together during my pregnancy and it was a great investment of time into keeping our marriage strong during the inevitable stresses of parenting. I highly recommend it.

The first few chapters are really sobering. The statistics are staggering and it was a good reminder to me of the importance of investing in my marriage despite so many other things vying for my attention now that we had another human to care for. I found some of the conflict chapters to be a little redundant, but then again my husband and I are both mental health professionals so we tend to conflict well. The rest of the book contains so many practical tools and excellent perspective that can benefit any couple. Highly recommend!

This book was recommended to me by my doula and I’m still in the first chapter and can tell it’s a great book. I’m looking forward to the wisdom and advice I pull from the pages and sharing them with my husband as we navigate this new world of parenting together.

I read this book soon after having my baby and was WOWED at how right the authors got it ALL. I wish I'd read it during pregnancy, but fortunately my husband and I were already communicating well and preparing to be a team as parents (we'd been married for nine years at that point).But even then, the book provided good reminders. Also, this book does such a great job creating a sense of normalcy out of what feels like very ABNORMAL situations (screaming baby, two testy parents, no sex, etc.). Every single chapter resonated with me, and I found the parenting advice to be great too. The advice to love and delight in your baby seems so obvious, and yet I think it's so easy for new parents to feel burdened by the new demands and miss all the joy. I also really appreciate the emphasis they put on husbands becoming involved fathers. I really think that the advice in this book is RIGHT ON.I loved this book so much that I bought a bunch of extra copies and have been giving them to friends as they become pregnant. I recommend it to EVERYONE who is expecting a baby or has a new baby in the house.

My wife is a psychologist and psychology professor and John Gottman is her absolute favorite relationship and family psychologist. She tries to get her hands on just about every book he has written and I learn from her as she's reading. He has a great down-to-Earth style of writing and I love the way he uses his case studies and numerous examples throughout the book to help the reader understand and fully grasp his concepts. Our daughter is now almost 2 so this was an eager read and a delightful change of pace from the other relationship and marriage books he has written.

My 11yo Novalee has read Front Desk at least six times in the past few weeks. She keeps coming back to it. Here's her review:The novel, Front Desk by Kelly Yang, was a very interesting and exciting book. It shows stories of immigrants, the story of a ten year old running a motel, and the hardships of the Tang family. Mia is a ten year old girl who moved to America from China when she was eight years old. Though, her family is poor and is struggling in this country. When she and her family get employed in a motel called the Calivista, Mia runs the front desk. The story also follows Mia to school, around her motel, and through her memories back to China.One reason why I loved this book was learning about the Tangs’ hardships. I think that this book can open the eyes of many people to how immigrating is hard and painful to many. When I learned about what the Tangs went through, I thought about what it must have been like for everyone else like them. More people need to know about these people and what they go through, and how they make America a great and stronger country.One feature of the book I liked was that it shows stories of other Chinese immigrants. Like one, a true tale, was told by a man named Zhang. When he first came to America, he had borrowed money from the loan sharks,(500, to be precise), and then he had gotten a job in a restaurant to pay the loan sharks back. His employer had confiscated his passport and ID, and Zhang had to sleep in the boss’s basement. But, Immigration came to the cafe, and the employees were forced to escape. The point is, all the immigrants had very hard jobs, and they had no choice but to do them. This was a detail that came throughout the story that made the story more detailed and envisionable.Those were the reasons why I loved this book, and you should definitely read this book.

Yet Yang tackles difficult issues like interpersonal, systemic, and institutional racism. She writes so simply and honestly, it’s hard to imagine a young person walking away without understanding these powerful messages.FRONT DESK is infused with dark truths about America and still manages to be light, heartwarming, and fast-paced. Lovable Mia solves problems by using her writing skills—not her math skills as her mother wishes she would. She beats the system by using her words, often disguised as the words of adults, to point out injustices and find pathways to a better life for her family and friends.Mia’s and her parents’ find—actually, create—community at the Calavista Motel. They fight back when multiple systems conspire to make life impossible for Hank, an African American man who lives at the hotel. They devise a system to hide desperate Chinese immigrants in vacant rooms. This is deep social justice work, accompanied by anecdotes of Mia’s follies at the front desk and problems at school.The book ends on a hopeful note, with the Tangs’ community surrounding them to help them take the first step off the poverty rollercoaster. The solution they come up with has a chance at helping others get off, too.FRONT DESK shifts the narrative about the American experience, acknowledging that there are many American experiences. The pathway to the American Dream can take many forms, and Yang has described one that is heart wrenching, hopeful, and a lot of fun along the way.

I loved this book. A friend recommended it and I had my 9 YO read it. It tackles the issues of poverty, immigration, racism and classism in a way that's surprisingly simple, honest, and age-appropriate. Best of all, the story is based on the author's own childhood so a lot of the characters and events come from her own actual experiences. I'm glad my daughter was able to read it and that I was able to enjoy it also. Would definitely recommend. As a caveat to parents who care about this, there is one bad work in the book where one character calls another a name that starts with the letter b that is a term used to say someone is born out of wedlock. I feel it's OK for my daughter to read that word (not sure she even picked up on it) but figured some parents would feel differently.

His previous books, My Share of the Task and Team of Teams, were both New York Times bestsellers. He is a senior fellow at Yale University’s Jackson Institute for Global Affairs and a partner at the McChrystal Group, a leadership consulting firm based in Virginia. JEFF EGGERS served for twenty years as a US Navy SEAL and also in government as a special assistant to the president for National Security Affairs. What is leadership? John Maxwell’s definition is the most common answer: “Leadership is influence.” That’s true to an extent, but it’s also too simple because it’s leader-centric, as if influence flowed only one way. In their new book, Gen. Stanley McChrystal, Jeff Eggers, and Jason Mangone identify three myths people believe about leaders and offer a more complex definition of leadership. Somewhat ironically for a book that criticizes leader-centricity, Leaders reaches its conclusions by examining the lives of thirteen leaders.First up is Robert E. Lee, the “Marble Man” of the Confederacy, who profoundly illustrates the distance between the myths and realities of leadership. Lee was admired by many white Americans for his martial valor and personal virtue. That admiration was given even though Lee lost the Civil War and miserably failed the greatest moral test of the nineteenth century by defending a way of life built on white supremacy and black slavery. His leadership consisted in what he symbolized, then, not in what achieved — or rather, thankfully failed to achieve..Then come several chapters in which McChrystal and his coauthors pair leaders under six headings: Founders (Walt Disney and Coco Chanel), Geniuses (Albert Einstein and Leonard Bernstein), Zealots (Maximilien Robespierre and Abu Musab Al-Zarqawi), Heroes (Zheng He and Harriet Tubman), Power Brokers (Boss Tweed and Margaret Thatcher), and Reformers (Martin Luther and Martin Luther King Jr.). These leaders often exercised influence despite their personal flaws (e.g., Boss Tweed) or the immorality of their causes (e.g., Zarqawi). Their profiles remind readers that leaders are flesh-and-blood people, not statues on pedestals.Taken both singly and in pairs, these profiles make Leaders a fascinating book, biographically informative but also analytically shrewd. As you read each short “life,” you come to realize that leaders exercise an important role, but not in the way that a simplistic definition portrays. Too simple an understanding of leadership results in myths about leadership, which McChrystal, Eggers, and Mangone describe this way:• The Formulaic Myth: In our attempt to understand process, we strive to tame leadership into a static checklist, ignoring the reality that leadership is intensely contextual, and always dependent upon particular circumstances.• The Attribution Myth: We attribute too much to leaders, having a biased form of tunnel vision focused on leaders themselves, and neglecting the agency of the group that surrounds them. We’re led to believe that leadership is what the leader does, but in reality, outcomes are attributable to far more than the individual leader.• The Results Myth: We say that leadership is the process of driving groups of people toward outcomes. That’s true, to a point, but it’s much broader than that. In reality, leadership describes what leaders symbolize more than what they achieve. Productive leadership requires that followers find a sense of purpose and meaning in what their leaders represent, such as social identity or some future opportunity.The key concepts to take away from the authors’ description of these myths are the importance of context, relationship, and symbolism in leadership. According to the authors, when those concepts are taken into account, leadership can be defined as “a complex system of relationships between leaders and followers, in a particular context, that provides meaning to its members.” This implies that leaders exercise a twofold role as “a bottom-up servant to enable action and a top-down symbol to motivate and provide for meaning.”I write this review as a Pentecostal minister and editor of a Christian leadership magazine — intentionally named Influence, by the way. Though Leaders is a secular leadership book, it teaches several valuable lessons that can benefit pastors and other church leaders. I’ll close with four that came repeatedly to mind as I read the book:First, as pastors and leaders in your church, there is no fool-proof, multi-step formula for becoming or producing other leaders. You should have a leadership pipeline and provide leadership training for your staff and volunteers, but you should also keep your eyes open for influencers who arise through other means. Paul’s leadership pipeline was the Damascus Road, after all, not the Jerusalem church.Second, share the work of ministry with others. Too often, we speak of what Pastor So-and-so accomplished at Such-and-such Church, as if he or she accomplished everything alone. But as Paul put it, the congregation is a body in which every member must do its part. So, share the work and spread the credit around.Third, tend to your soul. Jesus said, “Follow me.” Paul wrote, “Imitate me as I imitate Christ.” People will follow your leadership if you personally embody the joy and life-changing power of the gospel. Who you are as a leader is as important as what you do, in other words, because who you are as a spiritual leader symbolizes the life of meaning and eternal significance that people aspire to in Christ.Fourth, and finally, use your leadership for good. Both Robert E. Lee and Martin Luther King Jr. were Christians. And yet, at the height of their leadership, separated by a century, they exerted influence to achieve morally contradictory goals — Lee in defense of white supremacy and King in defense of racial equality. At the end of the day, however one defines leadership, shouldn’t doing the right thing be the most basic test of our leadership?

Reading Leaders: Myth and Reality truly is like a journey. The book examines the concept of leadership from many angles, and refreshingly, reflects on the topic from both a male and female perspective.As a women who has spent decades in a male-dominated industry, I have read many tomes on leadership, all of which left me thirsting for more. Why? Because I could never see myself or my female colleagues in them. Indeed, these authors state, “…the gender imbalance in leadership is both disturbing and unhealthy, and has deep roots in the history of leadership.” Are there no outstanding female leaders? Of course there are, and McChrystal’s book provides the most balanced approach I’ve read to date.Other readers, no doubt, will wax poetically about the merits of the book’s research, the clever method of examination, and the thought-provoking approach. And, as both a leader in my field and an academic, I would agree and applaud the effort.But honestly, the authors had me at Coco Channel. Harriet Tubman and Margaret Thatcher sealed the deal. From both a leadership and a reader’s perspective, I was hooked. The authors state, “Still, the many men, and far too few women, who stand atop their pedestals today reflect the ways in which we derive meaning, usually as a symbol of the values and virtues that we collectively espouse or spurn as a society.”In today’s society, we have a lot of self-examination left to finish to decide which values and virtues we will embrace as a society. Leaders: Myth and Reality, no doubt, will help us on this journey, as we assess the myths and realities of our current leaders. And, while Leaders: Myth and Reality hooked me with Coco Channel, the book challenged me to question my thoughts about leadership in a healthy and constructive way. What more could we ask of the authors?

This book is an excellent perspective on what we should seek from our leaders--and what we should demand from ourselves. There is no perfect leader, and thusly, followers must reckon what qualities are necessary for a leader to be successful and to represent the values that we hold dear. Then, it is the follower's responsibility to help elevate those leaders.In short, leaders are incredibly important, but without followers to mobilize those leaders which will make us all better, we as a country will fall short. If we stand a chance at separating leadership from fame, this is the book to help us do it.Perhaps most importantly, too, we can't always count on a genius, a power broker, a reformer, or some combination thereof to save the day. Leaders are not perfect, but they are perfectly human, as are we all. This book should not only instruct followers on how (and why) to elevate leaders which advance kindness and equality, it should teach us all about the leaders we can become. Whether as a parent, a teacher, a coach, or a politician, looking back at Plutarch should teach us all how to be the best leaders we can--and why our role matters so much.This is a book for everyone--if we can all agree (or at least discuss) what we need from our leaders, perhaps we can change the world for the better. Five stars.

Fortran has evolved a lot from the FORTRAN IV that I used in the '70s. It is now a niche language, for sure, but is widely used in the engineering and scientific communities. There are several reasons for this, including being optimized for fast execution of calculations, compatibility with decades of engineering libraries for things like linear algebra and fast Fourier transforms, and excellent array and complex number processing.Recent versions have added all the things one expects in a modern high-level language, such as modules, object orientation, parallel processing, as well as features that improve portability, such the KIND system for declaring necessary precision of variables, and API compatibility with C programs.All the new features can be a bit overwhelming for those of us who used the FORTRAN of old and are getting back into Fortran programming, or even for engineers who are learning Fortran for the first time. This book helps, not by describing the features in detail (you would want a Fortran reference for that), but by showing how they are best used and what the pitfalls of using them are. And like all good style guides, it explains the rationale behind each recommendation, so you can more easily figure out if your situation is different and warrants a different recommendation.I am really happy that I bought this book.

I am an experienced programmer, but, before reading this book, considered myself to be only a 'competent' Fortran programmer. I now feel that the Fortran code I write is of better quality, and that I am adhering to best practices.

This is a book about code writing style - not a programming guide. Useful but not for someone who just needs to get code written.

This book is concise but salient details are not omitted. The authors' experience with Fortran is clearly evident in the exposition and presentation of the material. As a novice to Fortran (although not to programming) I found that I needed to spend a day reading Metcalf's 'Modern Fortran Explained,' which is also quite good, before I could completely understand the examples but aside from the basics no previous understanding is assumed. I find myself referring to this book often and appreciate the ability to draw from the authors' expertise. Overall the practices and solutions presented are of very high quality.

None of these is going to make my life and better or longer*, but this book will. "Play On" is the key to the locked toolbox that holds the tools you need in the fight against sarcopenia. Spoilers ahead: I'm going to work on power instead of strength, and take breaks when I'm tired. So long, sarcopenia. I'll post an update with pictures of my leg muscles in a few months.* Assuming we don't have a carbon monoxide leak.

A very enjoyable read from a talented author. The book is mostly focused on elite athletes which I am not. I am just a 68 year old man trying to wisely exercise in an effort to resist the long and depressing list of effects of aging that he discusses at the beginning of the book.There were nuggets throughout that I can try and the epilogue is specifically about what's the takeaway for the non-elite athlete. It shined a light on some things I'm probably doing wrong that I'll work on fixing. Valuable. I'm glad I read it.

Simply put, this is a great read, the findings are actionable and I'm now more than ever convinced that 40 is the new 20!This one will stay with me for a lifetime. My gift giving for 2018 just became a lot simpler. Thank you, Jeff.

Stories were sourced via networking with doctors after talking to football players, rather than actually researched. I don't think he's googled even one NIH study. His advice at the end isn't bad, it just isn't complete. Emerging faschia science discoveries, effect of vibration platforms, funtional medicine and somatic practices (other than positive self-talk) on workout outcomes are not mentioned. There is big focus on football, and how they increasingly use surgical intervention, more sleep, going for less pain and more gain when training, and training based on the particular sport you practice when training to stay fit longer. Also silly stories about unreasearched cures that spread between the elite via word of mouth, like bathing in wine.So it's not helpful to most people seeking to be very good at an athletic endeavor late in life, because we don't typically run, play football, soccer or tennis, won't pay to bathe in wine. I was hoping for more science, less talk between elites. And what about how long dancers of all kinds are now staying on the stage? Further, females are mentioned only regarding injuries - stuff that could happen to anyone. None of the recent changes to the way elite women (50% of the elite athlete population) overcome age challenges particular to women are mentioned. Kindly, some woman dancer/runner/athlete/writer please step up and meet the challenge of writing a well researched and accessible book for all older athletes, and include the women.

I’m on the other side of 60. I’ve been exercising like I mean it for the past 45 years. This book is great, and full of wonderful, useful information for us lunatics who throw ourselves into the blender of fitness, with no intention of ever stopping. Bravo.
