There are several reasons for this, including being optimized for fast execution of calculations, compatibility with decades of engineering libraries for things like linear algebra and fast Fourier transforms, and excellent array and complex number processing.Recent versions have added all the things one expects in a modern high-level language, such as modules, object orientation, parallel processing, as well as features that improve portability, such the KIND system for declaring necessary precision of variables, and API compatibility with C programs.All the new features can be a bit overwhelming for those of us who used the FORTRAN of old and are getting back into Fortran programming, or even for engineers who are learning Fortran for the first time. This book helps, not by describing the features in detail (you would want a Fortran reference for that), but by showing how they are best used and what the pitfalls of using them are. And like all good style guides, it explains the rationale behind each recommendation, so you can more easily figure out if your situation is different and warrants a different recommendation.I am really happy that I bought this book.

This book is concise but salient details are not omitted. The authors' experience with Fortran is clearly evident in the exposition and presentation of the material. As a novice to Fortran (although not to programming) I found that I needed to spend a day reading Metcalf's 'Modern Fortran Explained,' which is also quite good, before I could completely understand the examples but aside from the basics no previous understanding is assumed. I find myself referring to this book often and appreciate the ability to draw from the authors' expertise. Overall the practices and solutions presented are of very high quality.

The last five things I bought on Amazon before this were 1) Fish food, 2) Gloves with LEDs in the fingers, 3) A stuffed cat vomiting a rainbow, 4) A carbon monoxide detector, 5) Measuring spoons. None of these is going to make my life and better or longer*, but this book will. "Play On" is the key to the locked toolbox that holds the tools you need in the fight against sarcopenia. Spoilers ahead: I'm going to work on power instead of strength, and take breaks when I'm tired. So long, sarcopenia. I'll post an update with pictures of my leg muscles in a few months.* Assuming we don't have a carbon monoxide leak.

A very enjoyable read from a talented author. The book is mostly focused on elite athletes which I am not. I am just a 68 year old man trying to wisely exercise in an effort to resist the long and depressing list of effects of aging that he discusses at the beginning of the book.There were nuggets throughout that I can try and the epilogue is specifically about what's the takeaway for the non-elite athlete. It shined a light on some things I'm probably doing wrong that I'll work on fixing. Valuable. I'm glad I read it.

Simply put, this is a great read, the findings are actionable and I'm now more than ever convinced that 40 is the new 20!This one will stay with me for a lifetime. My gift giving for 2018 just became a lot simpler. Thank you, Jeff.

Stories were sourced via networking with doctors after talking to football players, rather than actually researched. I don't think he's googled even one NIH study. His advice at the end isn't bad, it just isn't complete. Emerging faschia science discoveries, effect of vibration platforms, funtional medicine and somatic practices (other than positive self-talk) on workout outcomes are not mentioned. There is big focus on football, and how they increasingly use surgical intervention, more sleep, going for less pain and more gain when training, and training based on the particular sport you practice when training to stay fit longer. Also silly stories about unreasearched cures that spread between the elite via word of mouth, like bathing in wine.So it's not helpful to most people seeking to be very good at an athletic endeavor late in life, because we don't typically run, play football, soccer or tennis, won't pay to bathe in wine. I was hoping for more science, less talk between elites. And what about how long dancers of all kinds are now staying on the stage? Further, females are mentioned only regarding injuries - stuff that could happen to anyone. None of the recent changes to the way elite women (50% of the elite athlete population) overcome age challenges particular to women are mentioned. Kindly, some woman dancer/runner/athlete/writer please step up and meet the challenge of writing a well researched and accessible book for all older athletes, and include the women.

I’m on the other side of 60. I’ve been exercising like I mean it for the past 45 years. This book is great, and full of wonderful, useful information for us lunatics who throw ourselves into the blender of fitness, with no intention of ever stopping. Bravo.

Before reading any further, note: This a review of the READER'S edition - and the Reader's Edition DOES NOT include the facsimile images (art and calligraphy) of the original "Red Book: Liber Novus." I suspect many of those who ordered the book unaware of this will be surprised and disappointed. This distinction was not made clear in Amazon pre-publication information. If you wish to see the original book in all its visual glory, pay the price and order the complete folio-sized facsimile edition.So, why then publish, and why purchase, a "Reader's Edition"? Why is the this edition important, even essential?Because the text of "Liber Novus" (as Jung formally titled his "Red Book") is really more important than the art. Jung experienced and recorded his visions and then composed his draft manuscript of Liber Novus before beginning on the art. The art and calligraphy came later, they were composed over the following 16 years or so. The text - compiled principally between 1914 and 1915, with a last section added in 1917 - is Jung's primary record of his extraordinary odyssey across the threshold of consciousness, and into the heart of mythopoetic vision. As he said: "This inner world is truly infinite, in no way poorer than the outer one. Man lives in two worlds." This is the journal of Jung's exploration of the inner world - and it ranks as one of the most important journeys of exploration in the record of human exploration. Dr. Shamdasani, who spent thirteen years editing Liber Novus for publication, has strongly suggested that one should read the text before even looking at the images. I agree.If you are ready to start that reading, there is another reason this "Reader's Edition" is an essential purchase: the big folio edition of "The Red Book: Liber Novus" is huge and physically very difficult to read. Holding it on your lap, or finding a way to prop it up and read it, is a painful task. God have mercy if you wear bifocals! This edition is formatted in a normal book size, and allows a more comfortable reading experience (if reading Liber Novus can ever be a "comfortable" experience). You will not be disappointed with the beauty of this smaller edition; it is bound "bible style" in soft faux leather with rounded corners, and printed using three colors of ink to add the distinctions in headings and text (this replicates the style of the folio edition). And of course, there is a marker ribbon sewn into the binding. I have no idea how such a finely crafted book can be sold at this price.But the text is much more difficult to meet than is the beautiful art. The calligraphy and artwork are immediately stunning, even overwhelming. I know - based on the several seminars about Liber Novus I have taught over the last three years - that most people simply never make it past this visual experience; they do not read Jung's account of what happened to him between 1913 and 1916.What confounds 
the reader now is the same 
issue that confronted Jung 
then: Though imaginative, 
mythic, apparently fictive, and ultimately subjective, what Jung met in his wanderings spoke with the voice of an objective fact. It was independent, ineffably ancient, and yet intimately and synchronously involved with human history. He perceived it as real, and the story it told had the tenor of a revelation. Without some introduction, some guiding insight into what the man was doing, most readers become quickly disoriented.To guide your first journey through Liber Novus, I highly suggest you start by reading (again) Jung's biographical memoir, "Memories, Dreams, Reflections." At very least, study again Chapter 6, "Confrontation with the Unconscious." Then closely read Shamdasani's very fine introductory essay that prefaces Jung's text in this Reader's Edition. Next, get Dr. Shamdasani's beautiful new book, "C. G. Jung: A Biography in Books" - you will see my full review of that volume on the Amazon product page. After that, there are several hours of free lectures online from my seminars on Liber Novus. Thousands of people have them found useful, and you can find them easily by searching online for "The Red Book Lectures" or "C.G. Jung and the Red Book."Then, read. Take it slowly, give it deep consideration. It is quite a journey.

Reading reviews on the book I get the impression most view it as a story or a fantastical tale told from a troubled mind, and only see it as this. But it can be viewed differently, from the right mind-set. To me it is all, every sentence and experience told a metaphor for everyone's journey in life. Reading from beginning to end is like taking down the structure you've built your life upon subconsciously, and rebuilding it using tools and ideas of a finer quality, adding to with your own learned methods, if you have any, that you know to work as well, and discarding of the tools you used before that you thought worked well, but realize you only used because you knew of nothing else, or were too stubborn to use anything else. It can be read as a fantastical story, or as insight into the beginnings of Jung's later scholarly works. Or it can be read as Walden, or Thus Spoke Zarathustra, or the Bible can be read. Your mind-state determines your interpretation of it. And you may get different meanings as you read it in different periods of your life.

Absolutely beautiful drawings, a true ART book. Purchased because I cannot read German.I had bought the smaller ‘American edition’, and was very disappointed because it only has a few of Jung’s drawings and those look like they were done by a 3 year old. The book itself is worth reading.After I found out that that edition did not have Jung’s drawings I decided to go ahead and spend the books for the true edition. I found out that it does include the ‘American’ translation as well.The drawings, They are fantastic, so beautiful. Read how he created his own colored inks, by grinding.I’m astounded by the drawings and his ability to come up with a totally new type of psychology.It amazes me how much time it must have taken to just create this book with its drawings and yet, work as a psychologist, go to conferences, write for publications, have a family, as well as having interests in other things such as Alchemy and Spiritual Paranormal.Well, I’ll end with saying the book is amazing as well as the man behind it.

**** Please read this one**** Well, after reading over 100 books..I think "THIS ONE IS NUMBER ONE"... Its Not Just a Good Book.. But the Way He Explains it... Is Special... I am a Retired Race Car Driver/Instructor.... and Being in The ZONE... is the Same for Anything... You Do Mentally... Pool, Chess, Boxing, Snow Skying, or DAY TRADING.. As am Example.. ( Today is Sunday).. but.. Last Friday... I Made a New Yearly Record.. I did Eight Trades.. Making Money ON ALL of Them.. and Ended up with a 10.7% Profit In ONE DAY... Yes.. alone 11% in One Day.... But I was.. Totally In the ZONE.... and I feel I owe Much of it to Reading This Book.... Good Luck.. and Have a GREAT DAY.... JohnofSJ...

This is a poor piece of work. The author seems to know nothing of the psychology of decision making, and not that much about the markets. His writing is graceless and repetitious, with pointless asides. The essence of Douglas's message is this: Develop a "winning attitude." And be disciplined. Don't have a neurotic relationship to the market. This is obvious stuff, and the author communicates it poorly. Some of the content is seriously misguided. For example, Douglas asserts, on no authority except his own say so, that the "true attraction of trading" is . . . self-expression. (At p. 18.) This is wrong: the true attraction of trading is . . . making money. Another example: Douglas claims that traders who think that the best way to get better at trading is to learn more about the financial markets are falling into "a trap" because "the market simply offers too many often conflicting variables to consider." (At p. 13.) Douglas repeatedly, and egregiously, devalues knowledge of the markets. I am tempted to make an unkind remark, but will refrain, and just say caveat emptor!

This is a must read for traders, If you want to understand the fundamentals truths of trading, If you want to trade with a carefree state of mind, and more importantly, if you want to understand the trader's perspective and market's perspective, then you need to read this easy-to-read book.Douglas made an outstanding contribution by writing this book, it's far better his first book "The Disciplined Trader". probably because he was more experienced and more educated when he wrote this one.

This book clearly explains the mindset of a successful trader and what it takes to succeed. It's easy to read, the hard part is undoing head games. So far, so good.

The very best source to learn this necessary step in successful trading. You can have all the analytical skills in the world, and if you do not have the right mindset you will be among the vast overwhelming majority of people who fail at trading and lose a boatload of money in the process. Study this book carefully if you wish to be in the small percentage of successful traders.

Trading psychology is just as important , if not more important, than understanding technical analysis. Learn from the late, great legend of trading psychology himself, Mark Douglas. The narration is pleasant and not a distraction like many audio versions of classic books. I would highly recommend this classic to anyone who wants to trade at a serious level. It doesn't take the place of fundamental or texhnical analysis. It simply makes FA and TA work on a more consistent level. And consistency is what trading is all about.

Really his the nail on the head, speaking of the head, it all starts there. The trading game is a "head game".I don't usually read many books more than once but I think 5 or more is easily doable for this Master Piece is worth that and more...

This book was a revelation to me. Trading without reading this book is putting yourself at a disadvantage. It will help you more than any technical trading book. In fact it will save you.

A wonderful book by a wonderful author ... It's rare to laugh out loud more than a few times with any book -- this one had me in stitches many many times.Parents and pet owners especially will like this book.Reading it, you get to experience your own Self ... And to laugh at that Self... Also have the opportunity to be deeply touched by love and relationship. Such a fun time!!

After listening to Mr. McLean's stories on CBC radio, I was interested in how well his stories convert over to print and found them to be just as good as his radio show. They might be too tame for some, but they are humorous looks at real life that I often find myself thinking I might do something similar to some of the characters.

I think of Stuart McLean as the Canadian Garrison Keillor, and his show "The Vinyl Cafe," as their answer to "A Prairie Home Companion." This series is excellent for anyone with a mental age over six years.

Stuart is going to be SO missed.

If you are a Stuart and Vinyl Cafe fan, you'll love this, although it is somewhat jarring to "hear" Stuart in prose if you're an addict if his phenomenal oral storytelling skills. One if the stories had much more details than the oral version I'd heard, but this just made his tight oral skills even more impressive. I think people unfamiliar with the radio show would still enjoy it.

Stuart McLean is a good, funny light read. He makes it all seem so believable with a timing sense, that even though you can see the joke coming it builds so well that when he delivers his joke it is hilarious. I read it to my 11 year old granddaughter.

Laugh out loud funny and very entertaining
