Though now eight years old, THE FLOCK continues to sells very well. One of the aspects that struck most of us when we first read it was that healthy people develop separate personalities on a moderate level: a "work" personality, a "spouse/lover" personality, a "son/daughter" personality, a "parent" personality, and many more. But healthy people don't completely dissassociate because they aren't protecting their souls from the intense kind of suffering experienced by a victim of sexual abuse.The best books teach us as much about ourselves as the subjects about which they were written.

I personally read this per recommendation of my counselor. I plan to read it again just to catch anything I missed. I couldn’t put it down and I myself have DID and have had a difficult time trying to understand it now that I know I can’t deny it any longer. People are skeptics because they haven’t been through such intense trauma to survive as a child. I was happy that she went with her healing process more than the trauma experiences themselves. I have a hard time reading others trauma as it is triggering. Highly recommend this book for someone who’s struggling. Such a great read

I loved this book and have checked it out a few different times from the library. I finally got a copy for myself. This book was really the best I think in all the books I've read about MPD/DID in how the client was treated and how she resolved her issues. The therapist may have had a unconventional method of treating this client...but it was perfect for the client and worked! That being said, I will not say that every client ought to merge her personalities. That may not be the best option for each client. To see another example of this read "When the Rabbit Howls" by the troops of Trudi Case (not sure I got the spelling of her name right) Trudi Case had many, many more personalities and fragments. Merging these who had been her only companions and friends through many dark years was a thought she couldn't endure. She was successful live not being merged.

Though this account is 30 years old Joan's story is insightful and is written in a way that will very clearly demonstrate how DPD can be hidden and uncovered by the person affected and those around them. I learned a lot about DPD from The Flock. It's a true story with a bittersweet ending (to the book, not her life) and shows how the disorder can affect lives, but does not sensationalize DPD.

It taught me a lot about Multiple Personality Disorder, now called Dissociative Identity Disorder, and it went right in line with the lives of my friends that have DID. I didn't give it a 5 star review, just because it was a little disconnected and hard to follow.

I feel very strongly that this is the very best DID book out there, but only because i related so well with the author. It does portray a very different therapy style, a re-parenting style. I cant speak to the effectiveness of it, but this is a well done book with journal entries from both the patient and the therapist. such a good read. I read it twice already!!!

I was diagnosed with Dissociative Identity Disorder. This book is a harrowing account of the evil suffered by a child. My life was much worse, but it still hurts to read how children are treated by monsters parading as parents.

I felt pretty ambivalent about most of this novel, with the exception of a few stories in it around psychiatric "professionals" who acted in anything but a professional manner. Near the end another brief mention of a later psychiatric relationship troubled me deeply, as it the psychiatrist helping her through her pattern of abusive relationships appeared to have taken a very victim blame-y stance and his logic was accepted as true and logical. Very troubling.Aside from these moments I just had a hard time engaging emotionally, and I think this is largely because the novel was co-written by her therapist. I was always worried that the therapist's voice would overrun Joan Frances Casey's and I felt skeptical because of the number of instances of psychiatrists largely capitalizing on their patients' condition for book deals, especially in the wake of Sibyl. In addition there was a huge part of me cringing me at the therapy techniques not because they were alternative but because the dependence on transference carried the same potential for good as it did for harm -- which is why these techniques are so widely frowned upon.None of this, however, makes this woman's story any less valid or valuable. I'm glad I read it and have added hers to the voices I've listened to in order to gain perspective.

This is really a marvelous book detailing the strange and scary world that multiple personalities inhabit. I like its format and the intermingling accounts by the therapist and the patient(s). I like also the descriptions of the events that caused the original traumas. Suffice it to say, that the author does not glory in the gruesome details. I am intrigued by the enormous effort that the therapists expended in treating the twenty-four sub-personalties and the time such treatment takes. As a holistic healer (urban shaman) who has worked with multiples, Ms Casey and Ms Wilson have my deepest respect.

I grew up with the Indiana Pacers and ABA basketball. If you have any interest in the old ABA that featured a red, white & blue ball and the three point shot, then I think you will enjoy this inside look at the old league that began in the 60s. It features comments from executives, investors, referees, coaches & players. Very well put together in my view. Basketball before political correctness and LeBron James INC. I still have my Freddie Lewis, Billy Keller, Bob Netolicky, Mel Daniels, Roger Brown, George McGinnis et al basketball cards. Roger Brown may be the most outstanding basketball player folks have never heard of. Also a shame the Kentucky Colonels never merged with the NBA but that story is in the book.

Loose Balls was written by Terry Pluto in 1990 documenting the short but eclectic life of the American Basketball Association. I read this book two years ago but I had to do a review. This book was very entertaining. Anyone who enjoys basketball from the 70's should pick it up. It is an easy read detailing the wild ride by players and owners of the upstart ABA. While not specifically written in a comedic manner the shenanigens pulled during the life of the ABA can't help but make you smile and even laugh. The book does a great job in detailing what went on in a league with crazy characters, future NBA stars, teams that were lucky to last a full season, and where nothing surprised you if it happened. This isn't a long review and is short on details but again pick it up if you have any interest whatsoever in basketball of that era, the ABA, or the NBA. You won't be disappointed.

The story of the ABA is a great one - a league that flew by the seat of its pants, had a lot of characters, and was a great innovator. A lot of players like Dr. J and Moses Malone got their start in the ABA. It also introduced the slam dunk contest and the unique red, white, and blue basketball.Pluto essentially takes a huge amount of content from interviews and weaves them into a series of chapters that capture the chronology of the ABA, its teams, and some of the core themes. He does a pretty good job of weaving together different voices to keep it interesting.

As a fan of the ABA, I grew up pretending to be be Roger "The Rajah" Brown and shot one-handed shots like George "Big Mac" McGinnis, I found this book to be fun and entertaining - back when basketball was still a sport and people treated it as such. There's too much money in the game now and people have lost all perspective. This book brings back the memories of guys making good money for the era, but not fortunes! The madness that was the ABA and the guys that played with a chip on their shoulders. Fun read!

Wonderful book - one of the best, informative sports books I can recall reading. Incredible information on all the zany characters, marketing efforts, ongoing franchise changes/relocations. Everything here including many famous NBA players who got their start in the ABA. Gilmore, Erving, McGinnis, Barry, Bobby Jones, Malone, etc - all figured greatly in this wonderful, brief league.ABA deserves a HELLUVA lot of credit for making NBA product better league when they merged the Spurs, Nets, Pacers and Nuggets into the league in 1977. The NBA was better for it...plus my 76ers were one of the chief beneficiaries with McGinnis, then Erving, and then Bobby Jones coming on board. Hey, if you don't take MY word that this is an excellent read, refer to the 2002 Sportsman of the Year issue of Sports Illustrated. It has this in the top 100 sports books of all time.As a kid who had one of those ABA basketballs in the 70's this brought back a LOT of memories...It is the perfect book for someone on the go, or on a plane, or in other situations where a long drawn out read is not possible. It consists of short stories, woven together around various themes (the barnstorming nature of the ABA, tough guys in the league, etc.)The most AMAZING thing about this book is a picture of Julius Erving, during his rookie year, shooting a free throw for the Virginia Squires. If you look in the background, you can count the number of fans in the stands on ONE HAND. Can you imagine? The chance to see Julius Erving (who gets his own special section of this book) in his ROOKIE YEAR?Also, I never really knew the Connie Hawkins story until this book. Larry Brown, Dan Issel, Doug Moe, Zelmo Beaty, all your old ABA faves are here.Plus, for stat geeks, a list of all the seasons, the standings, playoff results, etc are contained.And pictures of the Miami Floridian 'ball girls' in tight-tights! :)

Not a bad book. I bought this after hearing a local radio personality recommend it. It definitely has some interesting information, and it gives you a good picture of what those ABA days must have been like. However, as some others have mentioned, the writer's style of delivery takes some getting used to. I think it could have been a better read with more time taken to weave everyone's recollections into a more cohesive narrative.

About the Author

Born and raised in Los Angeles, Dr. Terry Dubrow obtained degrees in medical sciences from Yale University in 1980 and the UCLA School of Medicine in 1986. He completed a residency in general surgery, became chief resident in surgery at the Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles, and completed a plastic and reconstructive fellowship at the UCLA Medical Center in and went into private practice in 1993. He has authored more than 30 articles published in peer-reviewed journals and has lectured extensively to professional groups in surgery. A fellow of the American College of Surgeons, he is certified by The American Board of Plastic Surgery and is also a certified expert for the California Medical Board, working extensively since 2000 as an expert in medical malpractice. He is the author of The Acne Cure and writes extensively about health and wellness.             Dr. Dubrow has been showcased as the surgical expert on several television shows including Fox Network’s The Swan, where he performed and helped coordinate extensive contestant transformations, E! Entertainment TV’s Bridalplasty, where he was the surgeon; and since 2013, he has been the star of E!’s hit show, Botched. Dubrow was also one of the three hosts of the network’s show Good Work. Other appearances include The View, TODAY Show, Dr. Phil, CNN's Headline News, CNN Showbiz Tonight, Larry King, Fox News, Fox and Friends, Good Day LA, and The CBS Early Show. Terrible! So poorly written (couldn't they afford a good editor?) and dull, dull, dull. I was shocked because I expected so much more. Nothing new and you can learn more from YouTube videos on anti-aging. Don't waste your money.

I was so excited to get this book since I am a huge fan of both Heather and Dr Dubrow. It really didn't have any new information that I haven't heard from their interviews or watching Botched.

I was excited to get this book but there was nothing helpful in it. I read it cover to cover in a few minutes, don't waste your money.

I expected so much more. I already knew most of this just from reading online. I thought this would be more insider information. They also didn't include some procedures like ulthera that I thought would definitely be in there. The only part I liked and found useful was the info on picking a doctor.

Total waste of money, didn't tell me anything I already had knowledge of, wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

Love the Dubrows but there isn't anything new in this book.

Heather recommends lame old school things like greatlash maybeline mascara. Really? I wanted some real updated information on actual new products. Doesn't happen here.

At first, I was disappointed that it did not list my skin care products. I then realized that they only listed what they recommended. Lots of information for all sorts of treatments! A must buy!!!

We all need to learn the history and struggle of the modern American wildcatters who have brought prosperity to some parts of the US and possible environmental problems to other parts. One way or the other, this country benefits from exploiting our own fossil resources rather than importing them. As a retired paleontologist who has spent many hours reconstructing past climate, I am deeply concerned about climate change as it is impacting us now and know the problems will increase in the future. It is vital to transition away from fossil fuel but that cannot occur over night. Steady progress toward that end is critical but in the meantime, we definitely need to rely on our own resources rather than those of other countries. This book puts the recent history of supplying our energy needs in perspective. It also teaches the reader how volatile the global and domestic energy market is. The tipping point between wealth and bankruptcy is always staring the independent wildcatters in the face. These people have changed our energy story from import to abundance. Now it will take our resolve to curtail excess and to shepherd these resources for important use far into the future. Great book!

Fracking and the energy extraction industry as a whole are like Wall Street: they attract people who feed on high, sustained doses of adrenaline, risk, and power. This book introduces the reader to a large number of fascinating gamblers with strong egos and iron nerves. The book is fast moving and fascinating, because the topic itself is fast moving and fascinating. In the end, the message isn't simple, but that is probably a sign of accuracy and realism.

For looking looking for a history of horizontal fracturing - i.e. the development of the combination of horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing that has allowed the oil & gas industry to tap into resources once thought unrecoverable and push U.S. production to historic highs, even after most industry watchers thought the domestic industry was well past its peak - Greg Zuckerman offers a detailed and comprehensive account. He chronicles the rags to riches stories of several key players - George Mitchell of Mitchell Energy, Aubrey McClendon, and Tom Ward of Chesapeake, Harold Hamm of Continental Resources, Mark Papa of EOG Resources and Charif Souki of Cheniere Energy (who is not really a fracker, but rather an LNG distributor and marketer who is also a colorful character). The stories describe the difficulties (including near bankruptcies) that many of these players endured. It makes for interesting reading. Among my few complaints: Zuckerman has a penchant for drawing out his narrative, especially in anticipation of major events. In my mind, the book is probably 50-100 pages too long. However, Zuckerman is an excellent writer; so much so that I was able to read the book in one sitting, which was a first for me. Curiously, the book is divided into two parts: the Breakthrough and the Race; but the Race continues even after the industry collapses. Besides telling the stories of these independent wildcatters, Zuckerman offers an analysis of the environmental questions surrounding fracking at the end of the book. What's missing is whether this "race" to develop this major natural resource represents good energy policy. (To date, we are the only nation that has gone all out to develop shale supplies and while some estimates put our remaining supply at about 100 years, it is still a finite resource.) The latest version of The Frackers offers an Afterword; but the story is still evolving and would benefit from an update, especially after the death of Aubrey McClendon. For those interested in learning about this important chapter in the history of the U.S. oil and gas industry, The Frackers is well worth a read.

Not knowing much about fracking, but wanting to know what all the controversy was about I chose this book to get me up to speed. It was a great book to start with. It provided history about fracking and identified the key players who made it happen. It also explained the interaction between the companies and state and federal governments; current through the end of 2013. It also touched on the state of fracking in other countries outside the U.S. I think this book is still relevant and recommend it as a good starting point for someone wanting to learn about fracking. It will provide the reader with the necessary framework to read and understand more detailed information about fracking.

As the title says, this book is primarily a history of five or six prominent players in the shale fracking energy revolution. Some were lifelong wildcatters, others were simply investors interested in the oil and gas industry and the book focuses primarily on them and others to give a history of fracking in the US. The writing is excellent, the story flows smoothly, and the characters are quite colorful. From an Egyptian-born former restaurant owner to a high school educated wildcatter turned billionaire to engineers, geologists and investors, the people described are fascinating as you follow their successes and failures in trying to drill for oil.The author doesn’t focus too much on the technical details of the techniques and technology advances that made cost effective shale drilling possible, but he does give enough of an overview to give the reader an idea of what it took to make the energy revolution possible. The main action in the book starts in the early 1990s and ends in 2014. This is a great read and recommended for anyone interested in shale energy or just enjoys interesting character-driven nonfiction.
