This book was the suggested text for my Veterinary Immunology class and overal I was very pleased with it. I probably spent a little more time sleeping in class than I should and as a result relied heavily on this book to learn the material. I was pleasantly as the book was a fairly easy read. The material was presented clearly and in a logical order that made it fairly easy to understand.

This book is required for my immunology course, and is a very good, easy-to-understand description of the immune system. It also has much shorter chapters than in most of my other textbooks.

Good textbook, but didn't need it for my immuno class...so I "wasted" money. Maybe it will be helpful when studying for boards??

Tizzard has produced a fine and reasonably comprehensive text for introducing veterinary students to the science of immunology. Starting with easy to grasp basics he proceeds to ever increasing depth in the numerous areas of immunology.Unlike standard texts, which only teach mouse and primate immunology, Tizzard's book introduces the reader to the differences found in the immune systems of various species. This makes the book valuable not only for veterinary students but for non-veterinary immunology students, who all too often get the impression that all immune systems look and work like the mouse and human systems.While it is impossible to provide exhaustive coverage of all topics in a limited scope, Tizzard does a fine job of selecting and highlighting the most important findings and concepts in each area. Numerous illustrations aid in making difficult concepts clear and easy to grasp. He also provides bibliographies for each chapter which allow the reader to pursue more in depth studies.As with his earlier books Tizzard has again made a worthy contribution to the teaching of immunology. It is certainly to be hoped that this textbook will be widely used not only to teach immunology but also to give students an awareness and appreciation of the many ways in which different species have evolved and specialized their immune systems.

Concruent with previous layouts, this latest edition is repleat with photos, charts and graphics that aid in one's understanding of the fundamental principles detailed herein. A welcome refresher for the practiced veterinarian, it remains the standard text for graduate and veterinary school students alike.

This book is a wonderful supplement to class notes. It is a very thorough textbook for immunology.

Tizard does a good job of explaining the immune system for vet students and producers. If you need to begin learning about this subject, this is a good place to start.

Samuel gives a nice history of the foreign exchange market and his involvement in it, an excellent breakdown of his strategy, followed by 3 months of trade journalism, everything from pips won and lost to psychological explanations of missed trades.A real eye opener. As my title says, a must read for anyone seriously looking to trade full time - this is how to do it!

I've learned three things about how Stephen King writes; he can make children seem like real people better than most authors, he loves making jokes from the narrators perspective, and the journey is more important than the destination. His books may be a bit meandering, but he can write well enough that I don't care.In this novel, nine-year old Tricia McFarland is on a hike with her fighting family, and decides to get away from them for a minute. Unfortunately, that minute becomes several days, as she gets lost in the woods with only her Walkman for company. King really makes you feel like your lost in the woods with her, and it's a pretty enjoyable story.

I enjoyed this book thoroughly, and took my time reading it. I could "hear" Mr. King's "voice" in my head as I read this on my iPad Kindle app. I felt like I was reading something from a friend---as if he had written a personal letter to me--- to give me an understanding of what he went through to become the person he is today. I think that his directives about the "how-to's" and "don't do's" were very practical. I breathed a sigh of relief when I got the feeling that writing classes and clubs are kind of a waste of time. Just write, is what I think he was telling me, I mean, his audience. I will probably read it again. What I got from his personal, real-life-lessons is this: Read a lot. Read good stuff. Write all the time. Find a place and write. Don't share your stuff unless you share it with someone you can trust. Go with your gut. Write all the time (I said that already because he said it or inferred it frequently). Don't use the same adjective over and over. Stick to the point. Don't over-do it on the descriptions. Let your audience see the movie you see in your head, because if you write it well, they will. I am glad this wasn't a "point by point HOW TO WRITE a story or a book" book, because really, writing isn't something you can do easily from a bulleted list. Writing is something you do from your heart, and you keep doing it until it's right and good. And then when that person you trust reads your stuff and offers some criticism, you can take it for what it's worth and use it or not.

I purchased this book because the description stated that it contained all 4 books including Rage. What a disappointment to receive the book and open it to find that it includes only 3 of the 4 books... no Rage! If you are looking to complete your stephen king collection, avoid this copy! Incredibly frustrated buyer!

Some books I rate with 5 stars just because of my pleasure in the story. These aren't always well-written or creative, or something someone else would like. Then there are those books that are so well-crafted, not just with character development or storytelling but in the writing itself. This is one of those books. I've always given Stephen King credit as the "king of the flashback" and here he gives us some of what he does best, but he also shows again his ability to get inside the head of the character in the present. From making up lyrics to songs sung by a fictional boy band and the brand names of fictional ice cream treats, to details of a Midwestern city that make those of us living in Midwestern cities think ours is the one in the story. I wondered in the beginning of the book if King was making a game in paying homage to himself with hints he dropped to reference some of his previous best sellers, but he played this game for just a short while. There are plenty of other pop-culture references in the minds of the various characters that do well to establish their ages and backgrounds.As the story unwinds after the climactic events, my emotions surprised me. I've cried while reading books before, but not while reading the words of a bureaucratic proclamation!

The main reason I bought this book was that the description said that it included the story "Rage". I was dying to read that, and the other three stories would be a bonus. Well, what a major disappointment to receive the book and find that "Rage" is not included. There are three stories, not four, and I will be returning this book due to false advertising. Very, very disappointed.

I have been an on-again, off-again reader of Stephen King’s over the last decade or so (I was more loyal prior to that time) as sometimes I like his stuff and sometimes I don’t. The last one I read was the awful "Under the Dome," which was long, pointless and ultimately just silly, and I wasn’t thinking of reading anything else by him until I read a couple of reviews by Charles de Lint in a recent Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction. I trust Mr. de Lint’s tastes, so when he praised "Mr. Mercedes" and its follow-up, I figured I’d give them a try. Mr. Mercedes is the nickname given to a man who stole a car (guess what make) and plowed into a group of job seekers standing outside a building waiting for a job fair, killing 8 and wounding many others. Recently retired cop Bill Hodges has been drifting since his retirement, regretting that he didn’t catch certain bad guys, including Mr. Mercedes, but when he receives a letter purporting to be from the villain, instead of succumbing to depression as the writer intended, he begins to investigate. And, of course, the investigation just becomes more and more dangerous as he continues to delve into the mystery…. The reader knows who the culprit is from early on in the book, so the appeal is following the cat-and-mouse hunt as the suspense builds. King is as good as he ever was with respect to his characters and plotting, and he’s always great with the gross-out scenes (which here are not too many, thankfully). This turns out to be the first book in a trilogy, and I’ve already picked up the second, "Finder’s Keepers," with the third due out in mid-2016. Fast-paced popcorn reading, "Mr. Mercedes" just hits the spot; recommended!

Shannon Miles is amazing! I loved reading The Third Option for so many reasons. I found my 3rd option a year ago after years of trying to figure out what that meant exactly. I love how Shannon tells her story about her early years, career, family, and finding a way to successfully have both! Several sections really resonated with me; especially when she discusses the times she took risks, jumped off that cliff, and went after what she wanted. Reading The Third Option reminded me of why I picked this path. I went back and thought about the ways I not only best serve my clients but the best ways to serve myself to have a successful Third Option. I do not have young children but having a third option has allowed me to take control of my life, health and happiness!In 1980, a movie came out called 9-5. It was about taking control of your life and having options with both a career and family life. In this second volume of a trilogy that began with The Business of Enlightenment, Darnton returns to the extensive publishing records of the Societe typographique de Neuchatel (STN) to trace the demand for books forbidden as a threat to morals and politics. These "philosophical books," as they were called, included Rousseau's Social Contract. But with only one order in STN's records, it was hardly a bestseller. Accordingly, Darnton focuses on three widely disseminated books representing different popular genres: the pornographic Therese philosophe (probably by Marquis d'Argens); the philosophical utopian fantasy L'An 2440 by Louis-Sebastien Mercier; and the libelle (think libelous) Anecdotes sur Mme la comtesse du Barry ascribed to Mathieu-Francois Pidansat de Mairobert. His discussion of the distribution, reception and influence of these books is convincing and careful (general readers may find some sections on methodology a little too careful). Darnton sees these works as literature, not just sociological artifacts; and, if lengthy excerpts from L'An 2440 seem a little dated, those from Therese and Anecdotes are still ribaldly amusing. With this volume, Darnton consolidates his position as one of the most innovative and influential historians of 18th-century France. For over 25 years, Darnton (Shelby Cullom Davis Professor of European History, Princeton) has been studying reading habits and book selling during the period often referred to as the Enlightenment. The present work is published conjointly with a companion volume, The Corpus of Clandestine Literature in France, 1769-1789. The latter gives statistical details for what Forbidden Bestsellers covers more descriptively. The gist of what Darnton says is that philosophes like Voltaire and Rousseau had far less impact on French readers than did the anonymous authors of scandalous, libelous, treasonous, and/or pornographic works, most of which were smuggled into France from the Netherlands, Switzerland, or the German states. Taken together, they had a corrosive effect on all established values and practices and thus contributed to the outbreak of the French Revolution. Very highly recommended for all libraries.?T.J. This is a book about how and why some books and publishings were forbidden in early Europe. It tells how many Forbidden books were published and how the were distributed, fun and interesting .

A good read on a misunderstood era. My only criticism pertains to his translation of THERESE PHILOSOPHE -- so much is removed of THERESE that the story doesn't make sense. After 2 pages he omits 10 pages that make sense of the rest of the story -- Therese from age 7 to age 23 is omitted.Someone left a snide comment for this review, that of course some was omitted as it was excerpted. How convenient. When publishers do it it's called censorship. The lubricity is the only real charm of D'Argens work, as Sade commented (in Juliette), and without it there is no story.Darnton could have bleeped out the --- words and given us a taste; but this is America, so fidelity to the original text is no special virtue. Is this a children's book? Even Wikipedia is nowhere near as prudish. There is really no point to Darnton's translation except to prove that he can translate.Darnton surely knew he had no competition -- d'Argens, like Mirabeau, has not had a decent English translation. This goes for most libertine novels from the Enfer of the Bibliotheque Nationale, with the glaring exception of Sade, who is far more objectionable than the innocent and realistic sensuality of D'Argens.If you don't have to have it rated PG, get the LIBERTINE READER by Michel Feher. If you read French also check out Patrick Wald Lasowski, Philippe Sollers and others whose writings on libertinism and the libertine novel are easily found in Google searches.

This book comes from great research project. It is very interesting and you see points and case studies you have never heard before. Gives you a great idea on how mass media works under censorship.

This is one of the most intelligent books I have ever read about french revolution or, in this case, pre revolutionary France and the role of that vaporous, difficult to define but very real effect of ideas, emotions, frames of thinking and everything else that in the mind of public support or prepare the demolition of a regimen. The argument is smart, the style flawless. The book remembered me the great one of Crane Brinton about revolutions.

Many important facts I had not known (that there were no newspapers in 18th C France! that the King's ability to celebrate Easter Mass, having put himself outside the pure zone of Catholics by flagrant mistresses led to disrespect and demise of the Monarchy; the import of the Jansenists, and the government's action to prevent their end-of-iife-absolution; how the actions 50-70 years earlier led to the French Revolution; that Napoleon read Rousseau!) from a wonderful depth of research makes this a fascinating read. The best part is how Darnton sets up an analyses according to one line of ideas, then wipes it off, offering another thesis using a different set of premises. This makes the reader think, and keeps the ideas lively, instead of the usual historian laying down the "Facts' which the reader must swallow whole. His analysis of the Therese story is brilliant philosophy, well worthy of the honors he had received, MacArthur prize, Harvard Fellowship, etc. This is much more than a history; it is like entering a mirror-within-a-mirror-within-a-mirror, to understand the reverberations of the questioning of religious principles. I am increasingly interested in how the West attained the present separation of church and state after centuries of the stranglehold Catholics had on life. It took many jolts over a long period, and both questioning of the leaders' hypocrisy, and the ability to disseminate these questions to the public. This book also shows how aspects of civilisation as we know it were vastly different then: just the concept of "public opinion" was new; how powerful it is in democracy now! I should think policy makers would study this book to understand the West, to see how to help democracy prevail in struggling countries, where primary allegiance is demanded by the religion, not the state, and there is no faith in the rule of law. Who would have thought that such a topic as Forbidden 18thC Literature' would be so contemporary and meaningful. It is how Darnton investigates that makes this book so relevant, as well as his ability to gather facts, really look at the events and see what is going on; thorough, honest, open, without a point to prove. Brilliant!

Literary life has been creeping up on the kind of trouble that makes someone play the harmonica in the song Trouble Every Day on the Mothers of Invention Freak Out album. Trouble Every Day. I used to read for laughs, but Darnton's book on how books were banned for comments critical of religion, the state, and morals made me reflect on how the lack of a moral world order has been the basis for ways the religions and states have been getting away with whatever forms of perplexity people are faced with when some people just don't get it.
