These "philosophical books," as they were called, included Rousseau's Social Contract. But with only one order in STN's records, it was hardly a bestseller. Accordingly, Darnton focuses on three widely disseminated books representing different popular genres: the pornographic Therese philosophe (probably by Marquis d'Argens); the philosophical utopian fantasy L'An 2440 by Louis-Sebastien Mercier; and the libelle (think libelous) Anecdotes sur Mme la comtesse du Barry ascribed to Mathieu-Francois Pidansat de Mairobert. His discussion of the distribution, reception and influence of these books is convincing and careful (general readers may find some sections on methodology a little too careful). Darnton sees these works as literature, not just sociological artifacts; and, if lengthy excerpts from L'An 2440 seem a little dated, those from Therese and Anecdotes are still ribaldly amusing. With this volume, Darnton consolidates his position as one of the most innovative and influential historians of 18th-century France. For over 25 years, Darnton (Shelby Cullom Davis Professor of European History, Princeton) has been studying reading habits and book selling during the period often referred to as the Enlightenment. The present work is published conjointly with a companion volume, The Corpus of Clandestine Literature in France, 1769-1789. The latter gives statistical details for what Forbidden Bestsellers covers more descriptively. The gist of what Darnton says is that philosophes like Voltaire and Rousseau had far less impact on French readers than did the anonymous authors of scandalous, libelous, treasonous, and/or pornographic works, most of which were smuggled into France from the Netherlands, Switzerland, or the German states. Taken together, they had a corrosive effect on all established values and practices and thus contributed to the outbreak of the French Revolution. Very highly recommended for all libraries.?T.J. This is a book about how and why some books and publishings were forbidden in early Europe. It tells how many Forbidden books were published and how the were distributed, fun and interesting .

A good read on a misunderstood era. My only criticism pertains to his translation of THERESE PHILOSOPHE -- so much is removed of THERESE that the story doesn't make sense. After 2 pages he omits 10 pages that make sense of the rest of the story -- Therese from age 7 to age 23 is omitted.Someone left a snide comment for this review, that of course some was omitted as it was excerpted. How convenient. When publishers do it it's called censorship. The lubricity is the only real charm of D'Argens work, as Sade commented (in Juliette), and without it there is no story.Darnton could have bleeped out the --- words and given us a taste; but this is America, so fidelity to the original text is no special virtue. Is this a children's book? Even Wikipedia is nowhere near as prudish. There is really no point to Darnton's translation except to prove that he can translate.Darnton surely knew he had no competition -- d'Argens, like Mirabeau, has not had a decent English translation. This goes for most libertine novels from the Enfer of the Bibliotheque Nationale, with the glaring exception of Sade, who is far more objectionable than the innocent and realistic sensuality of D'Argens.If you don't have to have it rated PG, get the LIBERTINE READER by Michel Feher. If you read French also check out Patrick Wald Lasowski, Philippe Sollers and others whose writings on libertinism and the libertine novel are easily found in Google searches.

This is one of the most intelligent books I have ever read about french revolution or, in this case, pre revolutionary France and the role of that vaporous, difficult to define but very real effect of ideas, emotions, frames of thinking and everything else that in the mind of public support or prepare the demolition of a regimen. The argument is smart, the style flawless. The book remembered me the great one of Crane Brinton about revolutions.

Many important facts I had not known (that there were no newspapers in 18th C France! that the King's ability to celebrate Easter Mass, having put himself outside the pure zone of Catholics by flagrant mistresses led to disrespect and demise of the Monarchy; the import of the Jansenists, and the government's action to prevent their end-of-iife-absolution; how the actions 50-70 years earlier led to the French Revolution; that Napoleon read Rousseau!) from a wonderful depth of research makes this a fascinating read. The best part is how Darnton sets up an analyses according to one line of ideas, then wipes it off, offering another thesis using a different set of premises. This makes the reader think, and keeps the ideas lively, instead of the usual historian laying down the "Facts' which the reader must swallow whole. His analysis of the Therese story is brilliant philosophy, well worthy of the honors he had received, MacArthur prize, Harvard Fellowship, etc. This is much more than a history; it is like entering a mirror-within-a-mirror-within-a-mirror, to understand the reverberations of the questioning of religious principles. I am increasingly interested in how the West attained the present separation of church and state after centuries of the stranglehold Catholics had on life. It took many jolts over a long period, and both questioning of the leaders' hypocrisy, and the ability to disseminate these questions to the public. This book also shows how aspects of civilisation as we know it were vastly different then: just the concept of "public opinion" was new; how powerful it is in democracy now! I should think policy makers would study this book to understand the West, to see how to help democracy prevail in struggling countries, where primary allegiance is demanded by the religion, not the state, and there is no faith in the rule of law. Who would have thought that such a topic as Forbidden 18thC Literature' would be so contemporary and meaningful. It is how Darnton investigates that makes this book so relevant, as well as his ability to gather facts, really look at the events and see what is going on; thorough, honest, open, without a point to prove. Brilliant!

She started her own blog years ago and made money off it, worked at agencies big and small and thanks to her acute professional knowledge on what works and doesn't on social - landed a position as Director of Influencer Relations at Hearst Publications - where all she does all day every day, is work. with. super. influencers.So do you think she knows what she is talking about?Here's what the book would teach you- what people want to see on Instagram- what it takes to build a following on social media- the types of Influencers out there - anecdotes from influencers (normal people with strengths and weaknesses) who have built themselves from the ground up.- what an agent could do for you ( note - you dont NEED one to succeed, but a good one helps you get there faster)- what bad habits to avoid if you want to get campaigns over and overI read some of the negative reviews here and here are my thoughts:- a lot of them just don't like Brittany's message - i.e. you got to do the work.- they say it favors 'people who look a certain way'. Yes social media likes attractive people. That's also true in real life. The good news is though, most people are attractive if they are well-groomed and are genuinely nice and have personalities. And a lot of influencers are not physically perfect - we just know our angles, and if you are not a fashion/beauty influencer per se, concentrate on creating beautiful content. Scott Schumann took photos of others. He has millions of followers.- that being an influencer is just 'a bunch of girls who do nothing but post photos of themselves all day.' .If you ever shadow a professional blogger or content creator , you can easily see taking photos takes probably 5% of our time. The rest of the time we are creating editorial calendars of what to post, pitching brands, creating proposals, planning the shoots, editing and engaging with our audience.So if you want a truly inside look on the world of #influencers , read the book , and get informed insight on what it really takes to become an "Influencer" .Heidi

This book is a rip off. The text is gigantic, so there are only a few sentences per page. Also, it is a feminist book. The entire book is about women in the influencer market. If you are a female, this may be an empowering book, but as a male, I find it useless. It has sections with headlines such as "women dominating the influencer market" and "my advice to young girls is to be YOU" and "Don't be that girl" and a lot more of that. Clearly geared toward women and clearly not what I was looking for. There is also a glossary with words defined such as "content". I have come to realize that this book is meant for 12 year old girls who may want to expand their instagram, and definitely not for anyone looking to be the next Tai Lopez.

There is so much insider information in this book that there is no way to know unless you work in the industry hiring influencers or are already a successful influencer yourself. This book is a great resource to understand how to take your online presence to the next level. It's easy to read and has a lot of actionable advice. There's nothing else like this out there -- glad i grabbed a copy!

As a relatively new influencer, I was looking for some more guidance and came upon Influencer. I find that the biggest challenge whenever venturing into an unfamiliar space is that you don't know what you don't know. Luckily, each chapter Brittany writes is saturated with easily digestible, helpful advice that fuels conversations you need to have with yourself as an influencer. Her voice is heard from front to back and makes it feel like she's sitting down with you and walking you through the tips you'll need. I recommend this to anyone who is looking for counsel from an industry expert on their journey to instagram fame!

Might be a decent book on the actualTopic, but I thought it would be about general influencer in one’s field of work. Instead, it was basically about getting famous via Instagram. Like those people who have grumpy cat and so on. Not remotely of interest to me. I returned the book.

Read this whole book in a day and it has a ton of great information - all the do's and don'ts, how to build your brand, and how to package it. Brittany also included examples on how to professionally answer emails, negotiate brand deals, and things brands are looking for when reading your about page. I think every aspiring influencer and current influencer can take away something from this. There's nothing else as honest and helpful as this book out there.

It's totally Instagram-centric. Lots of great examples of Instagram stars who mastered the art of building a following and keeping your "brand" alive and in front of your followers. I love the author's voice and humor. It made me want to know her! She's been in the business for a long time and knows what she's talking about.What I wished for that wasn't there was more specific information about how these "stars" actually build their Instagram presence. Maybe I'm being goofy but I wanted a little more how-to.

2 years ago when I started a beauty related Instagram account, I went to my local library to find a book that would help me in marketing myself best and to understand the influencer space. There was nothing that was available then. Fast forward to today, Ms. Hennessey’s book is exactly what I was looking for then. Speaking from a place of experience and knowledge, she gives a unique insight to an evolving space. I highly recommend picking up this book if you are a content creator and influencer that is looking for guidance in manuvering through this sphere.

My husband and I have been married 9 years and have read many, many marriage books, primarily in a Christian context. We are expecting our first any day now. This book has filled a void my husband has been feeling for a while now: the lack of research. While this is not a Christian book, it does respect and uphold the sactity of marriage. Instead of creating an entire book based on a couple bible passages, it organizes the book based on what successful couples have done to, well, be successful. The case studies are all very real and the research-based approach to what works and what doesn’t was really refreshing. Highly recommend this book!

This book applies many of the principles of making healthy relationships that Gottman and the Gottman Institute have become famous for, but specifically for new parents. It is readable and eminently practical. There are many real-life stories included as illustrations, quizzes for you and your partner to use to take stock of things, and exercises to improve your relationship.My husband and I read this together during my pregnancy and it was a great investment of time into keeping our marriage strong during the inevitable stresses of parenting. I highly recommend it.

The first few chapters are really sobering. The statistics are staggering and it was a good reminder to me of the importance of investing in my marriage despite so many other things vying for my attention now that we had another human to care for. I found some of the conflict chapters to be a little redundant, but then again my husband and I are both mental health professionals so we tend to conflict well. The rest of the book contains so many practical tools and excellent perspective that can benefit any couple. Highly recommend!

This book was recommended to me by my doula and I’m still in the first chapter and can tell it’s a great book. I’m looking forward to the wisdom and advice I pull from the pages and sharing them with my husband as we navigate this new world of parenting together.

I read this book soon after having my baby and was WOWED at how right the authors got it ALL. I wish I'd read it during pregnancy, but fortunately my husband and I were already communicating well and preparing to be a team as parents (we'd been married for nine years at that point).But even then, the book provided good reminders. Also, this book does such a great job creating a sense of normalcy out of what feels like very ABNORMAL situations (screaming baby, two testy parents, no sex, etc.). Every single chapter resonated with me, and I found the parenting advice to be great too. The advice to love and delight in your baby seems so obvious, and yet I think it's so easy for new parents to feel burdened by the new demands and miss all the joy. I also really appreciate the emphasis they put on husbands becoming involved fathers. I really think that the advice in this book is RIGHT ON.I loved this book so much that I bought a bunch of extra copies and have been giving them to friends as they become pregnant. I recommend it to EVERYONE who is expecting a baby or has a new baby in the house.

Amazing must have doesn’t matter if you already have a kid or two

My wife is a psychologist and psychology professor and John Gottman is her absolute favorite relationship and family psychologist. She tries to get her hands on just about every book he has written and I learn from her as she's reading. He has a great down-to-Earth style of writing and I love the way he uses his case studies and numerous examples throughout the book to help the reader understand and fully grasp his concepts. Our daughter is now almost 2 so this was an eager read and a delightful change of pace from the other relationship and marriage books he has written.

My 11yo Novalee has read Front Desk at least six times in the past few weeks. She keeps coming back to it. Here's her review:The novel, Front Desk by Kelly Yang, was a very interesting and exciting book. It shows stories of immigrants, the story of a ten year old running a motel, and the hardships of the Tang family. Mia is a ten year old girl who moved to America from China when she was eight years old. Though, her family is poor and is struggling in this country. When she and her family get employed in a motel called the Calivista, Mia runs the front desk. The story also follows Mia to school, around her motel, and through her memories back to China.One reason why I loved this book was learning about the Tangs’ hardships. I think that this book can open the eyes of many people to how immigrating is hard and painful to many. When I learned about what the Tangs went through, I thought about what it must have been like for everyone else like them. More people need to know about these people and what they go through, and how they make America a great and stronger country.One feature of the book I liked was that it shows stories of other Chinese immigrants. Like one, a true tale, was told by a man named Zhang. When he first came to America, he had borrowed money from the loan sharks,(500, to be precise), and then he had gotten a job in a restaurant to pay the loan sharks back. His employer had confiscated his passport and ID, and Zhang had to sleep in the boss’s basement. But, Immigration came to the cafe, and the employees were forced to escape. The point is, all the immigrants had very hard jobs, and they had no choice but to do them. This was a detail that came throughout the story that made the story more detailed and envisionable.Those were the reasons why I loved this book, and you should definitely read this book.

Lovable Mia solves problems by using her writing skills—not her math skills as her mother wishes she would. She beats the system by using her words, often disguised as the words of adults, to point out injustices and find pathways to a better life for her family and friends.Mia’s and her parents’ find—actually, create—community at the Calavista Motel. They fight back when multiple systems conspire to make life impossible for Hank, an African American man who lives at the hotel. They devise a system to hide desperate Chinese immigrants in vacant rooms. This is deep social justice work, accompanied by anecdotes of Mia’s follies at the front desk and problems at school.The book ends on a hopeful note, with the Tangs’ community surrounding them to help them take the first step off the poverty rollercoaster. The solution they come up with has a chance at helping others get off, too.FRONT DESK shifts the narrative about the American experience, acknowledging that there are many American experiences. The pathway to the American Dream can take many forms, and Yang has described one that is heart wrenching, hopeful, and a lot of fun along the way.

I loved this book. A friend recommended it and I had my 9 YO read it. It tackles the issues of poverty, immigration, racism and classism in a way that's surprisingly simple, honest, and age-appropriate. Best of all, the story is based on the author's own childhood so a lot of the characters and events come from her own actual experiences. I'm glad my daughter was able to read it and that I was able to enjoy it also. Would definitely recommend. As a caveat to parents who care about this, there is one bad work in the book where one character calls another a name that starts with the letter b that is a term used to say someone is born out of wedlock. I feel it's OK for my daughter to read that word (not sure she even picked up on it) but figured some parents would feel differently.
