I find it fascinating that the Library Journal review on this page should contrast "Personal Style" with Alan Flusser's great book, "Clothes and the Man," because I acquired both these titles at about the same time. And while Flusser's book was very influential on my then-developing sense of dress and style, the impact of Wagenvoord's book was much more limited and fleeting.This is interesting, because "Personal Style" sets out to cover an awful lot of ground, broadly but not especially deeply -- not only principles of men's clothing, but also issues of hygiene, diet and exercise, how to iron a shirt or pack a jacket into a suitcase without getting it all wrinkled, how to host a dinner party at home or order with confidence from a restaurant menu, and quite a lot more. The key to developing a distinctive personal style, he argues, is simply to feel comfortable about yourself, take good care of yourself and your possessions, and know how to handle yourself in a variety of situations. Nothing really all that complex.The book is a decent guide for what it sets out to do. But there's another element to it as well. It's a commercial for Grey Flannel.This title must have been commissioned by Geoffrey Beene, because not only does the man himself provide the introduction and the back-cover blurb, but the section on grooming, especially, is liberally illustrated with drawings of Grey Flannel products: deodorant, aftershave, shampoo, soap-on-a-rope, and so on. To its credit, the copy itself doesn't flog Grey Flannel. But the line's presence is still rather obvious. If this isn't a problem for you, you may well find some things in here moderately useful.

This book was a promotional offer with the purchase of Gray Flannel cologne. It was free. An army buddy bought gray flannel in 86 got the book and gave it to me.

I won't spoil it for you by giving anything away, but the chapter titles are priceless. Chapter 1 is, "There is no milk. You may have vodka."This book had me hooked as soon as I turned the first page, and held me throughout. You'll love LOST IN MOSCOW: a brat in the U.S.S.R.

Eleven-year-old Kirsten is a smart aleck who happens to be much smarter than her clueless family and socialist adult friends, who still believe the Soviet-Union-utopia myth. She peels the layers of their stupidity with charming silliness and go-girl bravery. The funniest scene I ever read in any book is the one in which, as her classmates and leaders weep with maudlin goofiness at the prospect of leaving Russia, Kirsten tries to manufacture tears by imaging her parents on fire. Kari Dunn Buron taught in K-12 with students on the autism spectrum for 30+ years. My 8 year old son often refers back to this book. The book explains so clearly how we feed into our fears and also how to over come them. My child was able to relate to the story and immediately felt like someone understood what he was going through. When his fears pop back up we often quote from the book. So glad we purchased this. It definitely helped calm his worries.

A MUST-HAVE for every person who works with kids, every special educator, and every parent or grandparent! I'm a Speech-Language Pathologist who works with kids diagnosed with all sorts of developmental disorders, and I use this book or similar discussions with almost all of them. I'm also using the techniques with myself, since I realize I'm not especially good at telling when I'm about to crack under pressure. I just purchased a copy for my brother and his wife to use with their daughters, one of whom is very emotionally and physically sensitive. Super wonderful excellent resource. Many many thanks to the author. I recommend the other resources by this author, as well, such as "A 5 Could Make Me Lose Control".

I can see how this book would help children with behavioral issues (throwing, meltdowns, etc), bit I was hoping this would help my child with anxiety. Her worries are really too big, but this book is not directed at those types of "worries. It seems like it's written for children that don't know how to handle anger and disappointment who then fall into emotional fits because their emotion is too large for them to know what to do with. My child has a "worrier" mind. She thinks of all the bad possibilities or pulls up bad memories like blood being drawn by a nurse and doesn't know how to stop her mind and slow it down. I was hoping this would help me find ways to calm her, but it didn't.I ended up giving it to a friend who works in a kinder behavioral class (children with autism, ADHD, etc) and she thinks it has a lot of great information for her kids.

My anxious 6 year old loves this book and has picked it up time and time again to reread and complete some of the exercises. It is very relatable and easy to follow and apply, even for the very young. Illustrations are nice, font is big. Exceeded my expectations.

This book has been so helpful with my autistic son! He has been getting angry and escalating very quickly and not knowing why or how to calm down. This book has taught his different stages to his anger and how to recognize them and calm down. His teachers now own a copy and love it too!

Using with primary males with autism who find talking about feelings difficult. Would be nice if they left blanks for kids and teachers to write their specific concerns. My 3 students enjoy rereading and draw different pictures each time, except for the one who hates to draw. He will talk about feelings, however, a huge change.

This gave my little guy a language to describe his feelings. He randomly came up to me yesterday and said, 'Mommy, I'm a five today.' I just about fell over. He has never been able to describe anything like that to me before. He also likes the calming methods laid out in the book.

I like it, and my son likes it too. I didn't quite realize it's geared more towards my 7 yr old's age group, instead of my 11 yr old's. But the older boy read it anyway. He has been referencing it quite a bit in the last week.

Of course there is not as much individual detail in this one book as there are in previous individual books… on the less than animal excrement… with names like Eichmann… Mengele… Barbie… Bormann… and others.What O’Reilly and co-author Dugard… have done… is almost common sense… if you realize that O’Reilly used to be a teacher. I feel the way this book is laid out… is in a perfect format… for high school students (in addition of course to adults)… who may just be having their eyes opened as to the actual scale and depravity of the entire sick non-human Nazi deranged debauchery known as THE HOLOCAUST! It would be impossible to write an “any- age-version” expose’ of The Holocaust without some stomach turning examples… and for any full-fledged adult… they should be educated with no sick detail redacted… for the very good reason… that every person on earth should know… how vile it was… so “NEVER-AGAIN” would be the result. But this book has purposely restrained itself… I believe… for the greater goal… of making this book be able to target a younger entry level… to start a full education process at a younger age… a little easier.The author’s should be very proud of the way they were able to tell such an awful… must-be-told… story… in such an educational… and easy to read format.
